Xavier,

First of all - take a look at the link in my signature. We need a little more information about your system.

Is it a server in production, or only for test? And how is it connected to the internet?

hi oceanwatcher. i've read your signature. ok here is the scenario. i have been given an assignment. my team is required to create a few servers for a company for instance, FTP HTTP SMTP servers plus firewall services. the only way that we can connect to the internet is via ebox as we are not allowed to use any routers. so inside the ebox services that is this function "backup" i have configured everything according to the ebox menu. but before i can test whether my backup is working. i need to perform this command "rdiff-backup -l /mnt/backup/" . but no matter which directory i try at it always appears an error message saying that : "couldnt find package rdiff-backup". do assist.

hi oceanwatcher. i've read your signature.

But did you read the post that my signature links to? :-)

If you did, you would have noticed we need to know what version number of eBox you are trying to set up.

Is it running directly on the hardware or in a virtual machine?

Is your internet connection working? Can you ping anything outside? You could try

Code: [Select]
ping ubuntu.com
Do you get an answer?

If you did not receive anything, you are clearly not reaching the outside world. So until you have figured out how to do that you will not be able to install anything new.

How is this server connected to the internet? A basic question... did you check that the network cable is connected and the light in the switch indicates a connection?

Has the network been set up correct?

Try typing this on the command line:

Code: [Select]
ifconfig
and copy the result in to your answer.

Not sure why a backup should be risky... It should be the opposite!

You say you can reach Google. How do you do that? Ping?

What DNS'es are you using? You could try to use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220)

You are using a school network - there are usually firewalls in place. Do you know of any blocks?

From the traceroute, it looks like you are getting out, so at least to me, this does not look like a problem with your server at all. BUT - there is a big BUT here :-)

There are others here in the forum that will be able to answer this better.

i did an exact trace route for google and i could reach its website.
i am not using any dns.
and i do not think that my school firewall is blocking anything that might prevent me from downloading from ubuntu. do assist.
