My zentyal is broken.
« on: February 24, 2014, 12:47:18 pm »
I was running a zentyal server and disabled the automatic updates, so everything was going well (still and luckily it wasn't still in production state); then I abandoned it for some days (had something else to do) and today I tried to login again, and couldn't access the web interface.
So ssh-ed and login as root then rebooted.
Now zentyal disappeared, I login as root on the server and the "lightweight desktop environment" UI appears.
I can't do anything.
I am very worried about this because, apparently, I really didn't nothing to mess the server. But I want to take this behaviour as an opportunity to learn.
So the questions are:

1) how to restore the server (using the automatic backups) from ssh and root user?
2) which logs could I see to understand better what happened?

Thank you.

what do you mean with "disappeared" ? No more folders ? no service ? no GUI ?

I mean no user interface!
When I login in the physical zentyal machine I don't find the zentyal OS, but as I mentioned before the "desktop lightweight environment";
I can't access the web interface (it's stuck "wait until zentyal is ready").
The server is still there, the user are still there and the folder are still there, still only through ssh.
Any ideas?

You need to post some logs /var/log syslog and the zentyal ones.

If you can just copy and paste the errors also how long have you left the server to boot?

much clearer now. So nothing disappeared in fact but GUI is locked on "waiting" message.
BTW, so that you get better understanding, there is no "Zentyal OS".
Zentyal is an application on top of "Ubuntu server" OS (well when installed from packages because when installed from ISO, this server rather looks like a desktop  :P)

As suggested by peterpugh, look at /var/log/syslog,  /var/log/zentyal/zentyal.log and /var/log/zentyal/error.log

I just wonder how you know that "users are still there;)  I've no doubt this is true but you can't really state it unless you already looked at LDAP content.
What's your Zentyal version ?

Looks like to me that his web interface is down and he just needs to restart it. :D

I must add that in the physical machine I can log only as "root", while from ssh I can also use my sudo administrators;
when I type my server's ip (https://my.ser.ver.ip) it stucks on "please wait";
here are the logs:

I must add that in the physical machine I can log only as "root", while from ssh I can also use my sudo administrators;
when I type my server's ip (https://my.ser.ver.ip) it stucks on "please wait";

So there is something really weird or, most likely, you did something really weird as root password on Ubuntu server is not supposed to be set to something one can directly use.
On Ubuntu, the idea is to rely on sudoers

This most likely doesn't directly impact your problem but on platform acting as internet gateway, having root account "available" is somewhat risky.

Yes Christian I supposed this, but I tried the root account as a last attempt.
I setup a password from ssh.
Do you have any idea?
Consider that I need an Active Directory domain. Do you know any reliable alternative or should I switch to Windows Server?

I won't comment if Zentyal is reliable enough or not as Windows domain controller because I don't use it for this purpose.
From technical standpoint, unless I'm wrong, problem is quite clear (reading your log file): lack of disk space.
Perform some clean-up in your /var/log partition, try again and let us know  ;)

Thank you Christian, you are my saviour.
I deleted all backups and now I can login.

Is there a way to put a backup limit based on disk space?

backup size should not increase that much, well at least not much as your amount of data. I really depends on how you configured it but this is a roll-over mechanism...
In addition to back-up you may also have a lot of log files. I don't why Zentyal doesn't perform log-files clean-up in a way that can be easily configured for admin interface  ???
