so why don't you use hdparm to set speed at what you will find convenient for you?
This doesn't answer to your question?

Or you could also have a look at the "laptop-mode-tools" package...

I will try hdparm again.... however I think last time I tried it I was not able to get the disks to spin down.  They would try to spin down, but than would spin right back up again.  I did not know if it was a result of the system perhaps checking the raid status or something....

This is why I was asking if anyone actually spins their disks down and how they due it exactly.

Strange because hdparm is a low level tool. Once spin speed is set, it is not suppose to change...
Are you using disks with "quiet" mode available?

laptop_mode tool is perhaps more suitable for you as it aims at reducing speed only when systen (disk in fact  ;D) is idle
