Cannot Connect Windows Clients to Zentyal PDC
« on: July 14, 2011, 01:52:19 pm »
Hi,

I will appreciate if if someone in the forum can help me with this issue.

I installaed Zentyal as a PDC in a network with Windows PCs.

The domain name configured on the PDC is xyz.com (for example). Then I updated the host file on the Windows PC to resolve the domain name xyz.com to the IP address of the PDC.
The problem now was that when I attempted to change the PC from workgroup to domain, inputting the domain name xyz.com, as well as the username and password created for that user on the PDC, the PC returns an error as follows:

"The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS...... This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses: 192.168.2.1".

Kindly help me as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Christophe

Hi todubiyi,

Try using a domain without .com. ie domain xyz alone.
you dont need to add anything in host of windows.

If you use windows 7, you need to change something in regedit.

i use PDC with zentyal, and everything are ok.

And, you need to be an administrator of file sharing module to add amachine in your domain.

Hi Christophe,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I need some clarifications regarding changing the domain name configuration to "without .com". Let me provide you more information about the setup of the network as follows:

1. A Vyatta router is the DHCP server, web proxy as well as the gateway of the LAN. In the Ssyem and DHCP Server sub-configurations of the Vyatta router, I had to put the domain name of the network (which is with .com). Therefore, the DHCP server hands out the domain name (with .com).

2. The Zentyal PDC, under the Core >> Network  settings, has the domain name (which is the same as the one on the Vyatta router) configured.

The question therefore is, do I have to change the domain name settings on the Vyatta and Zentyal to a name without .com or what?

Also, what change do I have to make in the registry of Windows7 PCs to connect to the PDC.

I appreciate your help.

Regards.

Christophe

In fact, your domain name xyz.com is not the same of your domain controler. In my case, i also have a domaine name abc.fr on the wan port. Dont change this config on your router.
But, for your pdc  you have to choose another domain without .com. In my case i choosed SAMBA.

I forgot to add that the PDC and the LAN in which the Windows PCs are situated are on different subnets.

Will this require any special configurations, on the PDC/Vyatta/Windows PC?

I remember clearly that I have tried the option of using a domain name both on the PDC and the PC (Windows 7) with a .com, but still got that message on the windows PC of "not being able to connect with the DC.

I think there are other things I need to do, which I am not getting right.

Thanks

Hi Christophe,

I am sorry for taking your time on this issue.

I configured the network as follows:

- On the PDC (Zentyal), I changed the domain name (under Core >> Network >> DNS) to domainname, without any dot com
- On the Vyatta Router, I changed the domain name under the DHCP server setting to the same domainname; also without dot com.
- On a Windows XP desktop PC, I changed the "member of" from workgroup to domain, with the setting as domainname, without dot com.

However, it still gave the error message "An active directory DC for the domain "domainname" could not be contacted.

Is there anything I am missing somewhere? The PDC is on a different subnet (192.168.1.0/24) than the cliebt PCs (192.168.2.0/24).

In your own case, what kind of router sits between the PDC and the workstations? Maybe there is something about Vyatta that needs to be configured for this to work.

Please help me!

Thanks.

Hi todubiyi
i think you you do a mistake configuring your domain in DNS network module.

To create a PDC, go to File sharing, check enable pdc and in field domain name write your domain, ie MYDOMAIN, that's all !

delete configuration thant you added in Network DNS

If your PDC is on another subnet, it's possible your PC could'nt reach your PDC.

To start, set your network on the same subnet, when everything will work, you could change subnet and ajust your setting.

Hi Christophe,

Will you advise that I use the DHCP service on the Zentyal or I continue with the Vyatta router's DHCP service?

I was wondering if there is any issue with using an external DHCP server.

I will make the changes as you have recommended anyway.

Thanks.

Hi Christophe,

You are such a life saver!

It worked at last!!!

I removed the DNS configuration as you advised but also had to add the IP address of the PDC in the WINS setting of the PC before it worked. After confirming that it worked when the PDC and the workstations are on the same subnet, I switched over to the normal setup- PDC and workstations on different subnet and it still worked.

I'm really on top of the world right now.

Thank you sooooooo much.

God bless you.
