Samba Users Can't Access Their Home Directories
« on: July 14, 2008, 05:05:39 am »
I setup a couple of users in eBox and their home directories were created. I tried accessing their home directories from other computers, authenticating as those users, but that only results in viewing the /home directory. Attempting to access the user directories results in a logon window, and no username password combination works. Any ideas?

Thank you,
Chris

Hi Chris,

What clients are you using? Are your clients members of a domain?

Hi Terence,

I am not running a domain, so I have working mode set to File Server. The only client machine I've tried so far has been running Windows XP. This will be a mixed environment, however, and will have Linux and Macs accessing the shares.

Thank you,
Chris

How did you install eBox? Using our custom intaller or on an existing Ubuntu installation?

Hi Chris,

Is your WinXP client autologin mode for logon credential?

Please describe more about the XP as well as eBox settings. These will reduce "ding-dong".

Thank you.

No, a login window is displayed when I type '\\192.168.96.20' in an Explorer window. I provide the credentials and am shown the contents of the '\home' directory. Another login window is displayed when I try to access my home directory, and all attempts to authenticate are unsuccesful.

I guess the easiest way to show you my eBox settings would be to provide screenshots. :)

I am able to access the Multimedia folder, but am unable to create any directories or copy any files there. I think it's just a simple permissions problem, though. I created the folder as root, and have a 500GB drive mounted to that directory.

Chris,

I suspect your Ubuntu Hardy (OS) has overwritten eBox settings (ldap.conf, smb.conf & etc).

Please do reinstallation and any change which you had made later, always choose the "tick sign" when prompted. (always let eBox to overwrite files)

Hope these help.

Should I reinstall eBox or the Samba module?

If you do not wish to spend more time on trouble shooting, i would suggest to start from stretch.

I'm not so sure that will do the trick. I installed eBox on a computer at work to replace our current router, and I'm experiencing the same problem. Everything I have configured has been configured through the web interface. There has to be something else I can look at here.

Well, I re-installed eBox at home. I was initially able to authenticate and access my user directory. I wasn't able to later, however. I had created another share located on a second hard drive. That was all I did.

Hi Chris,

If you could spare some of your time, do below:

1) Install VMWARE as host (any high end pc)
2) Install eBox (latest ISO image)
3) DON'T update the Ubuntu to latest version (I tried and it crashed)
4) Update all eBox module to latest version
5) Set all your desired settings and let eBox replaces the *.conf/etc files when prompted.

Hope these help.
