PDC Connection problems
« on: June 10, 2008, 05:06:52 pm »
Hi, I am a new user of eBox, and linux  :-[.
I have installed ebox 0.11.100 without problems and are able to properly configure all services that I want use, except one.
I want configure ebox as Primary Domain Controller but, after various tests, are not able to view the domain to the PC with Windows XP Pro.
I have created ebox users, one with administrator rights.
When set XP to connect to the domain, popup to me the request of login, I use the user with administrator rights, but I get an error that the domain is not found.
The domain name is correct, and user/password too.

I have tried to Stop/Restart the Samba service but I have resolved nothing.

What can I do to solve my problem? What information can I give you to help you find the solution?

Best regards and sorry for my english!  ::)

I've experienced some issues when changing the network configuration and domain name at the same time. I rebooted my virtual machine and everything worked. I have to figure out what the problem was.

I have tried several times to restart the server with ebox and the individual client (Real PC and Virtual Machines) but I have always found the problem.  :-[

Ok,

As usual I need as much information as possible to try reproduce the problem:

which version of eBox did you use?
how did you install it?
which modules did you enable?
Samba/PDC configuration?

How was your windows client connected to the network?
Which windows version were you using?
what did you see on samba logs under /var/loga/samba/*?

And anything else what you think will help me to set up  the same scenario as yours.

Thanks

eBox Version: 0.11.100
Install: I have download last ISO and use it to install
Module: network, firewall, users and groups, ntp, dhcp server, squid, file sharing (but in this moment I have disable it because not work  ???).
Samba/PDC:
- Working mode: PDC
- Domain Name: ebox (I have tried to change it)
- Netbiosname: magellano
- Description: EBox Samba Server
- Quota limit: 10 Mb
- Roaming: disabled

Actually my win client is connect in one workgroup and I tried to connect with PDC changing pc property (from workgroup to domain).
Windows version: XP Pro SP2 (and SP3)
I have tried to access to /var/log/samba and view the file log.smbd where found this errors:
Code: [Select]

There are other log files to look?

I also manually changed the smb.conf file following the guide found in the internet but I was not able to connect to PDC (I hope has not been entered incorrect data in smb.conf with my manually changes).

any news to this problem? I got it too.
It`s all about the machine accounts. Should they be added to ebox/samba somehow before you start joining the domain?

Ok, here is what I get:

I have ebox 101 on a ubuntu hardy amd64; everything is working except the adding of machine accounts.

my domain name is shotshotshot.local
my pdc domain name is shotshotshot (because at a forme install it refused to take the .local)

I have aadded a user calle admin and gave him admin rights.

When I try to join the domain, the win machine finds the domain, asks for the user and quits after wards with: "the entered machine account could not be found"

I heard somebody mentioning that adding the machine before in command shell would make joining possible. So I added my machine with

useradd -g machines -d /dev/null -c "machine nickname" -s /bin/false machine_name$
passwd -l machine_name$
smbpasswd -a -m machine_name

Then I try to join the domain an I get: "...existing machine account called 'xxx' was created before with different logon-informations. Use another machine-name" (that's more or less it, translated from german). Using another machine brings me back to 1.

Samba says:
Code: [Select]
[2008/07/23 22:54:58, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_administrators(792)
  create_builtin_administrators: Failed to create Administrators
[2008/07/23 22:54:58, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_users(758)
  create_builtin_users: Failed to create Users

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel,

Is there any chance you can test the following:

- Remove and purge ebox by running:

Code: [Select]
apt-get remove --purge libebox;

- Install again:

Code: [Select]
apt-get install ebox-samba

- Configure ebox but take into account the following:
Do not enable the file sharing module until your network is configured and you have set your domain and netbios name.

After that create your users and try add machines to the domain.

If you can do this you would help us a lot :)

Hey Javi, pooh reinstall is not exactlys my flavor for today :-(
We are investigating on the details of the problem inside the scripts. If we are not able to find anything within the next two hours we'll try the reinstall. But Im scared of even more problems appearing (as I had before, like disfunctional dhcp or missing net access).

Best,
Daniel

ps.: I am quite certain that I have NOT entered domainname and netbios name BEFORE I activated file sharing. What could that have done or changed?

Ok, I uninstalled and purged libebox, as you wanted and reinstalled ebox-samba. Everything went fine, just the joining of the domain didn't want to get going. The joining process takes longer than before (like about a minute or so), but ends with the sme failure-message, no machine account.  >:(

Before I dig deeper into that I decided to do the one last reinstall of ubuntu server, wuithout samba and let ebox install samba Further I will enter domainname and netbios name before I activate filesharing...let's see....

Ok, I did a reinstall of the whole thing. This time again with a broken dhcp. No luck with the domain joining. So I quit and go the defaulkt way with my server. I liked the concept of ebox, but I hate the fact that it' anything else but stable and final for a productive environment.

I am quite angry about the ubuntu guys who put that into their repositories of a server edition and even mentioning the package in their documentation, allthough this is anythin but working.

I'm sorry to hear that Daniel.

The worst thing is we couldn't reproduce your bug so it was pretty difficult try to fix it.

We'll try to improve and maybe in the future if you give it a try it will work for you.

Thanks for trying eBox
