Installation on Xenial Xerus 16.04
« on: June 13, 2016, 04:06:15 pm »
I purchased a new machine Asus H170 Pro motherboard, I5 processor, 16 Gb RAM. After flawless installation of Zentyal 4.2 from downloaded 14.04 distribution, the machine boots to black screen. I tried installing Ubuntu 14.04 on its own, same issue. Ubuntu 16.04 works perfectly, but when I try to install zentyal-core some dependency issues fail, specifically libclone-fast-perl which depends on perlapi-5.18.1. Ubuntu 16.04's installed perl-base version is 5.22.1-9.
Will removing perl-base 5.22.1-9 then installing 5.18.1 cause problems with 16.04? Or is there a version of libclone-fast-perl for perl-base 5.22.1-9?

Asus H170 Pro motherboard, boots to black screen (Ubuntu 14.04):
try to add "nomodeset" to grub options:
for first boot: http://askubuntu.com/a/38834
and
permanently after first boot: http://askubuntu.com/a/38782

libclone-fast-perl package is deprecated, no support on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial!

Are you trying to put Zentyal 4.xx onto Ubuntu 15.xx?  That's not going to work, ever, no matter what, not even kind of.
Besides that, any time you install Zentyal on top of Ubuntu you CANNOT do any updates/upgrades to the Ubuntu server.  You have to install the Ubuntu server, NO UPDATES ALLOWED, then add the Zentyal repo to the sources.list.
Once you get that done you run "apt-get update" to grab all of the Zentyal stuff and then run "apt-get install Zentyal" and hope it works.
Technically you're supposed to kill pretty much every other repo in your sources.list but a couple of them get to stay, can't remember which ones are which though.
Even more technically speaking than that you're actually supposed to perform the Zentyal installation off-line, which never really works.
Yeah, I know the documentation kind of sucks about it and it's kind of sketchy getting your head wrapped around everything Zentyal, trust me I've bugged them about their documentation a million times now.
Their commercial product documentation is less helpful than this forum to be honest, but that's something I found out a long time ago.  If you don't install Zentyal from the downloaded ISO you're not going to be happy with it at all.
Good luck getting things figured out and if you do get something working please post back and let us all know how you did it!
You will have to excuse my posts not having actual links in them.  I'm blind and can never find that insert hyperlink button LoL.  If you, or someone you know has vision problems check out The Tiki Lab.

I will install 16.04 and 5.0 over it tonight to test on a non production server and see how stable it is.  I want to have access to ubuntu software center anyways or at least the ability to install custom deb files.

I did, and no luck...the gpg keys in the 5.0 folder do not sync right and nothing installs.  You dont want to install over a full distro anyways it screws up the build.  I tried it with 4.0 for kicks and it really messes up the firewall/network modules at LEAST.  Ive been ok with that though, you can still install anything through command line and I have owncloud, plex, and a webserver running very well.

Edit: Im going to try and build 5.0 from source and install in a vm.  Will report back when finished.  I will also try and install on SERVER 16.04, using the packages file.

Im trying out NethServer, looks like it works about the same but with better support and a bigger community.  Running it in a vm to learn it before I deploy it.  Honestly I love ubuntu and am most familiar with it but the total lack of support I am seeing from the devs especially since they are selling an (expensive) product does not make me feel inclined to recommend.  Nethserver has integrated webserver functionality as well as owncloud built in, which means more work to install other things but better core support.  Ill come back here when 5.0 drops to see if anything improved :)

I did try to build a package to run on ubuntu 16 but it isn't stable as of yet.
