Rookies Question

I want ot work together with some people on a project.

For this reason I like to rent a root server from a webhoster an run ebox with some services.

E.G Samba or Openvpn. Is it save to run ebox in the net?

Where I have to take care or are there some examples how to secure the ebox. I run root-server with apache, tomcat, ... in the past and I kept them secure. What are your recomendations?
