help installing zentyal
« on: March 12, 2014, 02:41:18 am »
hello,

tried to install zentyal 3.3, but failed... it's fifth time when i try to install but no luck... i have problems with dns first of all...

so, my first question is: when i install zentyal, it ask me about hostname and domain. i have already an ubuntu server which works. tried to put "zentyal" as hostname, butwhat domain i must write here? the real one or an internal domain? i'm ask because tried to put here the real one and in webadmin an internal one, viceversa, but every time got errors with dns. when i make a search for the domain in mxtoolbox got errors... really i don't know what to do more...

when i switch again to ubuntu server it works...

please help me!... :(

32 or 64 bit.

i386 is the old pentium and works fine with a max of 3.5 gb ram

above and for 64 bit platforms then use amd64

prob zentyal-3.4-daily-amd64.iso is more common but depends on the age of the machine

Currently Beta and having a raft of quick fixes but yes.

It almost there and looking good.

You are more likely to get responses in the beta section as the focus is there.

I have a few step by steps as I have been testing.

https://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,20904.0.html

Apols about some of my dumb mistakes.

PS use expert mode on install it allows custom partitioning which by the sound of your hardware might be a requirement.
Not much different apart from that.
Wish it was called custom install expert seems to scare and shouldn't

still can't use zentyal...

tried even 3.4

so, my scenario is this one: i have a fqdn domain, "domain.com". when installing put hostname as "zentyal" and domain as "domain.com". after installing, entered in dns and setup  a hostname - "ns" on the public ip, setup the mx (same "ns"), saved and restarted but dns not work... tried mxtoolbox.com, but got errors every time...

in the past i use to use an ubuntu with all services, but want to change to zentyal, but if i can't use dns... :(

You will have to forgive my inept attempts but I did a run through of 3.4 here https://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,20904.0.html

Follow that for a test and then work out what you need to do for your specific implementation.

PS you do have a registered domain name and you are pointing DNS and MX at a static or DynDNS external IP?

well,

i'm very dissapointed, really: nobody answer me. try to install, to reinstall and to setup zentyal as my primary gateway, email server, web server, ftp server and so on but without luck:
- dns don't work!!!!!!!!!!! it don't point to my real domain name!!!!!!!!!!!!
- email server don't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it say domain can't be reached!!!!!!!
- tried to reach webmail: where is it???? it can't be found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

until now i'm used to use ubuntu, but i want to change to zentyal foe openchange module. it seems i'm not lucky!!!!!!!!!!!

i ill try today and tomorrow; if no success, i will not recomand zentyal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is DNS started? Have you verified the settings in the dns config? What do your logs say?

You will need to provide more then just "this is broke help me" to get some help. If you want that type of support that is what commerical version is for.

ok,

once again: in zentyal webbased administration, dns service, mail service, webserver service and so on, started.

checked on command line with "ps" command and all processes are started.

unfortunately dns lookup for my real name domain don't work.

on cli on internal server if i check dig it shows ok, but on external server same dig give nothing...

if i switch my server to my old ubuntu (save god i don't reinstalled my old server!!!!!!!!!!!) everything works!

now is enough detailed for you to help me?

Thats not you iChat is it? :)

A good start is to state what version of Zentyal, Ubuntu and core modules you are using.

There is a lot happening behind the scenes with a new release but the community is helpful.

Also how you have configured the basic's and logs are a key element.

Your network may be where the problem is, but as of yet we are totally blind.

Hope you get the answers you require.

I don't recall being asked a domain name for either Zentyal 3.0 or Zentyal 3.2 during installation, only the host name. I have to "fix" the (internal) domain name after installation because during installation Zentyal picks up a domain from the modem. This is using the Zentyal installer.

In any case, the Installation and DNS sections of the Zentyal 3.3 documentation are not helping you?

if i switch my server to my old ubuntu (save god i don't reinstalled my old server!!!!!!!!!!!) everything works!

Did you configure this Ubuntu server?

Under the DNS tab, do you have your fqdn added under the domain section with the following records?

IP Adress of the zentyal machine(zentyal.domain.ro), is added?
Hostname record based on your first post, is zentyal? --(zentyal.domain.ro, hostname = zentyal && domain = domain.ro, right)?
Mx records points to domain zentyal or ?
NS points to zentyal?

IF this is so. I would reference these against the contents of the bind .conf and look for contradictions.

Also, screenshots are great!
