New Zentyal install - eth configuration question
« on: June 28, 2013, 08:49:20 pm »
Just installed Zentyal 3.0.2 on a system consisting of a Verizon modem/router, a old P4 for Zentyal using 2 Intel PRO/100 nics, and a non-networked Windows box. I'm an absolute noob at this and don't have a clue how to set up IPs properly. Zentyal is using eth 1 & 2, since eth0 is a nonfunctional motherboard plug. I'm able to get online through eth1 on the Zentyal box, but don't understand how to determine the IP to enter for the LAN/eth2. Btw, I don't know Linux either but I'm determined to learn. Thanks in advance.

Hi. The address range that you use for your LAN is entirely up to you, within 3 private range possibilities: 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 or 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 or 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255.  Each of those choices can support different numbers of local IP addresses, but otherwise there is no difference.

So, as an example, for a small network you might use the range 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255.  The address for your default gateway (Zentyal) could be 192.168.0.1 and the range of LAN addresses available for your local users could be 192.168.0.50 - 192.168.0.100  This is just an example; many other possibilities exist -- it's pretty much your choice.
