I think you are right with your assumption. Sorry. :-(

Which data do you mean? Everything lieing on the server? Or the data from Zentyal?

I think it is not the best way to copy the data from Zentyal back after I installed 3.0, but I´d like to take a look at the old settings, that I will not forget one in Zentyal 3.0.

As I don't understand your point when you write:

let me explain further.

in /home, you have folders for each user and also shares under /home/samba

So easiest way to back up everything is to copy /home elsewhere so that you can later retrieve what you need.

And that´s everything I need to backup? Ok.

After that I uninstall Zentyal with the command above and installed it as shown in the docu for Zentyal 3.0. Than I configure everything manually?

If you don't use mail service and have not specified other shares, I don't think you have personal data elsewhere.

yes, then create again users & groups and copy back your data.
You may have misalignment in term of uidnumber and guidnumber but this can be fixed later once data is copied back. Next step  ;)

Today I've got time to take a look at my server again. But I cannot uninstall zentyal 2 from my precise server. I got this message:

root@UbuntuServer:/etc/apt# apt-get remove --purge zentyal
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package zentyal
root@UbuntuServer:/etc/apt#

How do I uninstall zentyal?

Kind regards
Dirk

Would you paste the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list here please?

This is the unpleasant side of "in place" upgrades: cascading messes.

I think you will have to temporarily adjust the last "Other sources" line to reflect the correct location of the 2.0 repositories. See

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community/Installation/InstallationGuide?version=76

for more information on setting up the repository.

I tried this with this last line:
Quote
# Other sources
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/zentyal/2.0/ubuntu lucid main # disabled on upgrade to precise

But the same message occurs:
root@UbuntuServer:~# apt-get remove --purge zentyal
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package zentyal
root@UbuntuServer:~#

I've add the repo
Quote
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/zentyal/2.0-contrib/ubuntu lucid main
additionally. After an "apt-get update" I got the message
Quote

Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

So I started the "apt-get autoremove". I think now it is time to change the source.list to the zentyal 3.0 repo and install it. What do you think?

Kind regards

Hallo again,

I started the installation of zentyal 3.0 on my precise server. After that I started some modules, that are necessary to configure zentyal with different users etc. In the next step I reboot the server and I can´t reach it in the intranet. A look in the /etc/network/interfaces showed me, that my static network configuration was deleted. Only to lines for the lo adapter are in this file. So I add my configuration as described here: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/interfaces#Statische-IP-Konfiguration When I reboot the server, the new adapter is listed in ifconfig, but I have no internet access. Furthermore, my the lines I add to the interfaces, were deleted again.

Hopefully, my description includes all necessary information.

What did I do wrong? And how can I repair it?

Kind regards
Dirk

Wrong ? For sure modifying /etc/network/interface content manually  :-\

The idea with Zentyal is that Zentyal manages configuration files. It relies on templates. If you need to apply changes, do it following this documentation even if I don't think this one will solve problem you are currently facing.

I'm always surprised with the amount of Zentyal users manually changing settings first in config files when they face problem while they decide, on the other hand, to go for Zentyal. I though, but I'm obviously wrong, that one of the main reason for deploying Zentyal, compared to manual service management, was to benefit from some consistency and configuration easiness thank to user graphic interface.

What I suggest is that you launch Zentyal GUI (locally if you can't access it from you LAN) and check configuration.
Then look at log files and also try to determine error root cause before applying fix, still using first GUI. Manual config change should be, from my standpoint,t he very last choice.

I think this pure nescience of templates used by zentyal. In the doc one only find things to configure zentyal over the web gui.

How do I access the website from my ubuntu server? I tried x-www-browser, but I only get some suggestions to install a browser. And how do I install a web browser without internet access?

Is it possible to edit the zentyal templates manually to get internet access?

Thank you
Dirk

Indeed installing GUI on server itself might be difficult without internet access  :-[
Not being able to access internet from your server is one aspect, but do you also mean there is no network at all, even from LAN?

If there is no NIC up, then you can try to modify /etc/network/interface but i such case, do not reboot your server nor relaunch Zentyal as it will erase your customized configuration. Try instead to enable this interface (I would suggest you enable the one connected to LAN), then try to access Zentyal on HTTPS.

I temporarily activate eth0, logged in the webinterface and changed the configuration there. Now it works! Thank you!

However, some problems are still there with the DNS:
Some modules reported error when saving changes . More information on the logs in /var/log/zentyal/
The following modules failed while saving their changes, their state is unknown: dns

The DNS is deactivated.
And it is not possible to access the internet. An apt-get update causes errors:
W: Failed to fetch http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-updates/universe/i18n/Translation-en  Something wicked happened resolving 'de.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Do you have any suggestions for this problem?

All best
Dirk
