[SOLVED] Zentyal as a Router
« on: October 11, 2012, 04:47:31 pm »
I've seen a few messages related to using Zentyal as a Router...however, I'm not sure I've seen a clear resolution/answer.

For question/discussion purposes I put together a diagram of what I'd like to do - https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/10qJlfzbRhbuMU246Sd1TTS4VfwRzMfTKkSdKcHQT5rQ/edit

This possible?  If so, can the configuration be handled through the Zentyal interface?

Yeah thats the main gateway mode with zentyal being the man in the middle between two network cards

Great documentation and thanks for the response.  My lingering question is what gateway IP address do I use when I update Gateway in Zentyal?  I updated the diagram - https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/10qJlfzbRhbuMU246Sd1TTS4VfwRzMfTKkSdKcHQT5rQ/edit

Would I need to have a static IP address for ETH1 (the Internet NIC)?

I usually use 192.168.3.1 as its away from common router subnets

I don't think 192.168.3.1 would work as an IP address for a NIC (ETH1 in my case) on the Internet side.  That needs to come from the ISP, no?

It depends how your ISP is distributing IP addresses.
The easiest way would be to set eth1 (external adapter) as DHCP client. Then your modem requests an IP address from your ISP and will pass that through to ETH1 on Zentyal server. (like you would do when you connect a pc directly to the modem)

to ad to rob...

than eth0 would be static  and you could  use zentyal's  dhcp module to provide ip's to your client pc's
its all in the documentation ..

You're both right.  I didn't realize that Zentyal would auto-configure the Gateway for me!  Fantastic.  All is good and thanks much for your responses.
