[Solved] VPN to mapped drive
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:32:12 am »
Hello all!!

I have a PC running Zentyal 2.2 as a Gateway/Firewall/VPN server.

The VPN is 192.168.160.0/24 with tap1 interface on 192.168.160.1

the lan is 192.168.1.0/24.  I have this network advertised to the vpn.

I can connect to the VPN with out issue and am assigned the ip of 192.168.160.2

Now here is the problem.

I wish to connect to a mapped drive on the 192.168.1.0/24 network.  I can not ping any of the 192.168.1.0 ip address nor browse them on the network.  any thoughts on how I might be able to access the resources on the 192.168.1.0 network?  I have the drives mapped as such   \\NAS200\Disk1    The client is running Windows 7.

I was checking the logs and was a failed message to do needing elevation, so I ran the openvpn gui as admin and it seem to fix part of the problem, I can now ping my local network 192.168.1.0 as if I was there, so that is good!!  But my mapped drives still do not work.

But my mapped drives still do not work.

Might be because DNS is not pushed with Zentyal VPN config. For what I understand, UNC, based on IP when NetBIOS with WINS is not used, requires DNS.

So I need to enable the DNS module on the zentyal box then?  or do I need to use the internal ip ad the server?  \\192.168.1.2\disk1 ??

Glad it works  ;)
Enabling Zentyal DNS module doesn't really solve the issue. This is one (mandatory) step, next one being to tweak VPN module, because there is, AFAK, no way to push DNS with VPN using only Zentyal GUI, however this can be done modifying .mas conf file.

Another approach could be to maintain local hosts file on each client but I would definitely NOT promote this. Using IP is another option  :)
