Hi everyone. My zentyal system has been emailing me the alert below every 5 min for the past few days. What is the problem and how should I fix it?  I assume it talking about some sort of domain controller sync problem however I haven't noticed an issue.

My system is running Zentyal 4.1.1 fully updated. It servers as a mail server and backup domain controller.  My primary domain controller is a Windows 2008 R2 machine.

That worked perfectly Ron. Thanks for the great tip!

Apparently my system is complaining about a couple of issues it's having. Which has opened up a bunch of additional questions I now have but I will save those for another thread.   :)

Thanks for the help Ron!

Installation and Upgrades / Mail to root from root [SOLVED]
« on: May 27, 2015, 08:30:52 pm »
In my mail log I'm seeing mail from the root account, to the root account.  It happens every few minutes all day long. What is causing this? I have no root mailbox. Below is an entry from the mail.log file and attached is a screenshot of the log in Zentyal.  I'm currently running Zentyal 4.1.1 that is fully updated.

Installation and Upgrades / Cannot reactivate Antispam filter
« on: March 20, 2015, 09:22:38 pm »
Hello. I have a weird issue. I was using Zentyal mail server with the antispam feature activated. The antispam feature has been working great for months.  Then I deactivated the antispam filter for a short time by unchecking the "Antispam Enabled" checkbox on the "SMTP Mail Filter" page to do some testing. Now I have rechecked the "Antispam Enabled" checkbox to reactivate the filter but it is not working.

If I check the SMTP filter logs it shows "There are no logs for this domain" and if I check the mail logs I can see the Zentyal mail server is allowing spam mail through.  Is there anything else I should be doing or checking? Has anyone else encountered this issue?

I'm running a fully up to date Zentyal 4.0.6.

Thanks.

Installation and Upgrades / Plaintext authentication POP3
« on: March 17, 2015, 11:30:29 pm »
Is there anyway to enable plaintext authentication for POP3?

I have edited the /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf file to allow plaintext but when I restart the service my changes are removed.

disable_plaintext_auth = yes
changed to
disable_plaintext_auth = no

Installation and Upgrades / Re: 503 Service Unavailable - After Upgrade
« on: January 26, 2015, 10:09:15 pm »
Hi. I had a similar issue after I upgraded from 3.5 to 4.

Have you tried this...

1. Backup the file /var/lib/zentyal/conf/webadmin/psgi-subapps.yaml (just in case we broke something and had to restore it)
2. Execute: sudo perl -MEBox -MEBox::WebAdmin::PSGI -e'EBox::init(); EBox::WebAdmin::PSGI::removeSubApp("/ebox"); 1'
3. Execute: sudo perl -MEBox -MEBox::WebAdmin::PSGI -e'EBox::init(); EBox::WebAdmin::PSGI::removeSubApp("/soap"); 1'
4. Restart webadmin with "sudo service zentyal webadmin restart"

Installation and Upgrades / Disappearing Inbox Mail
« on: January 06, 2015, 03:34:42 am »
Hi everyone. I have an issue... I'm not sure if its a Zentyal problem or an Outlook problem.

Server: Zentyal 4.0.5 fully updated with OpenChange configured and enabled
Client: Windows 7 with Office 2013

I have Outlook set to connect via OpenChange (MAPI) and Outlook is in cache mode. When I open Outlook it defaults to show the inbox however when Outlook first opens it shows no email. If I wait about 30 seconds the email will show up. Then if I wait another 30 seconds they disappear again. Then if I wait another 30 seconds it comes back.  This continues endlessly.  If I try to click on one of the emails (when they are visible) it won't open.  If I click into another folder and then back into the inbox I can then open emails but it still continues to cycle. If I turn off cache mode then nothing will show up in the inbox.

Any suggestions? This issue is driving me crazy!

Thanks.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: outlook 2010 push issues

I'm having the same issue with Office 2013. I thought this bug was supposed to be fixed in Zentyal 4?

I would love to implement the commercial version of Zentyal because I really like the idea of Zentyal but this bug is such a fundamental/basic flaw that there is no way any company could implement this. If I was managing development at Zentyal, every developer would be working on this bug until it was fixed. There are no other bugs as important as this.  Especially now that OpenChange is the main focus for Zentyal.

This bug is like buying a car and being told you have to get out of it and back in every time you come to a stop sign.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Issues in 3.5
« on: August 06, 2014, 08:57:27 pm »
Hi CCScott. I think you are SOL. I'm dealing with an identical issue for a client. The research I have done shows that the outlook inbox refresh is a known issue and has not been fixed yet. I believe it is scheduled to be fixed in Zentyal 4.0 but I think you also must be running Outlook 2013 or 365 for it to work correctly.

What I have done with my client is moved them away from Outlook and have them use the webmail client instead.  The webmail client is very nice and easy to use and I think any end user would be satisfied with it.

As for the phantom password issue, check that samba isn't crashing.  If you are trying to connect Outlook to Zentyal and already have a PST attached or try to move email or contacts around from a connected PST to Zentyal or vice-versa it will crash samba every time. The only symptom you will see is a disconnected error in Outlook.  The only thing you can really do to fix it is reboot the Zentyal box and try again.  I believe this is also on open bug that is scheduled to be fixed in v4.0.

The public folders problem, I'm not sure about because I haven't experimented with them yet.  I'll give it a try and let you know if I come up with anything.

I was originally planning on setting up the community edition and if it worked well move to the SMB edition and bring over a handful of other clients I have that are interested in the product. However, the inbox refresh issue is a showstopper. If I had paid for the SMB edition with that issue I would have been furious. I'm surprised that they claim outlook compatibility with such a glaring bugs.  I think Zentyal has a ton of potential and I would really like to stick with it but they just need to get some fundamental issues corrected before the next release.

Good luck.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Where is mail stored Zentyal 3.5?
« on: August 06, 2014, 08:39:53 pm »
Well I haven't hear back from anyone but I think I have it figured out. I was originally trying to figure this out so I could backup mail. If anyone can see an error in my research please correct me because I am still very much a novice.

First, I read in some other posts that to backup email in Zentyal you should use the Sogo backup tool. Not true... Sogo is only the groupware piece of the equation. So if you use the Sogo backup tool you are only backing up things like calendars, contacts, shared folders, etc. You should definitely still run that backup if you are using openchange but it will not capture mail. I have setup a cron job to run the sogo backup tool daily.  Follow this link to use the sogo backup tool: http://wiki.sogo.nu/bakupRestore

Second, Zentyal uses a mail program called dovecot to process all of the incoming and outgoing email in the system.  http://www.dovecot.org/
Dovecot relies on a common mail format called "Maildir" to stucture and store mail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maildir
Maildir stores mail in the directory /var/vmail/(domain)/(user). Mail is then broken down into subdirectories based on the lifecycle stage of the email.
/new = unread email
/cur = read email
/tmp = used by the system during processing

You can verify the mailbox locations by checking the dovecot config file.  The config file is located: /etc/dovecot/conf.d

In each of those subdirectories, each email is broken down to an individual file with a unique ID assigned by the system. To backup/restore emails in the system, Dovecot offers a simple sync tool called "dsync" (similar to rsync) that allows you to backup emails to another location either locally or via SSH. With the tool you can backup/restore all mailboxes, individual boxes or individual emails. It also allows you to create a mailbox mirror if you were planning to migrate to a new server or run a colo, etc. Check this link out on how to use the tool: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Dsync

My final backup solution was crashplan.  I was already using crashplan to backup a few other machines and they offer a great headless linux client. So I just set crashplan to monitor the /var/vmail directory and back it up to the cloud. Crashplan will do an initial full backup then just monitor backup changes. According to dovecot if a user accidentally deletes an email I should be able to restore simply by copying it back down from my backup. However, you need to make sure all of the permissions remain the same.

I will try to follow up with additional posts as I test the restore functionality both through Crashplan and dsync.

I hope this helps anyone that is in the same boat.

Thanks,
Chad

Installation and Upgrades / Where is mail stored Zentyal 3.5?
« on: August 03, 2014, 04:27:49 am »
Hi everyone. I'm running Zentyal 3.5 with the OpenChange module.  I have about 12 users accessing their email through the system.  Each user has a few thousand emails. If I look at disk usage it says the mailboxes occupy about 3 GB.  I have begun using the sogo backup tool but I have noticed that the back up files for each user are very small. Usually only 200-500kb. I thought the tool was supposed to backup mail as well as settings but I guess I'm wrong. So where exactly is the mail being stored in the file system? Does anyone have any suggestions for backup?

Thanks for the help.

Chad
