Installation and Upgrades / Re: New Server
« on: April 07, 2014, 12:55:40 pm »
Thanks all for the replies.

I am using 12.04 as the Virtualisation Host running KVM

The actual Zentyal will be 3.4

We will be moving to commercial eventually but 3.4 has more upto date features at the moment.

Yes, I know that it will be a reinstall but in actuality I will spin up a commercial and join the domain then migrate.

I was more interested in pointers as to what hardware folks are using for a small business - 20 users ish.

Installation and Upgrades / Logging

I am trying to resolve a problem whereby I can't get Zentyal to join an existing Samba 3.2.6 domain and a friend has asked me to give him a Level 9 log.

I have edited /usr/share/zentyal/stubs/samba/smb.conf.mas and rebooted but it does not seem to be logging - what should I be doing?

root@zentyal:~# grep log /usr/share/zentyal/stubs/samba/smb.conf.mas
    log level = 9
    log file = /var/log/samba/samba.log

Installation and Upgrades / New Server
« on: April 03, 2014, 05:44:54 pm »
Hello All,

Just preparing for my first, live Zentyal roll out.

I have built a Z3.4 on KVM and joined the Domain which is currently controlled by a Windows 2003 DC - worked a treat.

I span up the Z3.4 on my workshop server and joined the domain using a tunnel from 40 miles away - awesome!

Now I have the new hardware to build their own server so I can install it next week.

I have an ML310 and am planning on using stock Ubuntu 12.04 to run KVM

2 x 2TB 7200rpm SATA Disks in Software RAID 1 for the Virtual Machines and a 3TB disk for rsnapshot and other backups.

Any advice before I start installing?

Simon

OK, I can add a DNS entry to get around the PTR issue but then I get

2014/03/28 16:33:48 INFO> Provision.pm:823 EBox::Samba::Provision::checkServerReachable - Checking if AD server 'x.y.z.a' is online...
2014/03/28 16:33:48 DEBUG> Provision.pm:827 EBox::Samba::Provision::checkServerReachable - The specified domain controller x.y.z.a is unreachable. at The specified domain controller x.y.z.a is unreachable. at /usr/share/perl5/EBox/Samba/Provision.pm line 827

The domain server is working for the Windows clients - what check is being made?

Logs, always good...

2014/03/28 15:50:54 INFO> Provision.pm:924 EBox::Samba::Provision::checkAddress - The IP address x.y.z.a does not have associated PTR record

This is the correct IP for the old samba server and it DOES have a PTR record - I can check this with online DNS checkers

I think my problem is DNS related (maybe?)

The existing samba server does not run DNS, the DNS server is a standard control panel from the ISP that allows me to setup an A record with reverse for the old dc

Installation and Upgrades / Joining a Samba 3 Domain
« on: March 28, 2014, 04:25:24 pm »
Hi All, I have a Samba version 3.6.2 running a domain and I was hoping to Join a Zentyal 3.4 as an Additional Controller then promote it to take the FSMO roles and take over so I can retire the old samba server.

However, I can't get Zentyal to join the domain, it says

The specified domain controller 81.24.63.124 is unreachable.at /usr/share/perl5/EBox/Samba/Provision.pm line 827 EBox::Samba::Provision::checkServerReachable('EBox::Samba::Provision=HASH(0x4c6ca70)', 81.24.63.124) called at /usr/share/perl5/EBox/Samba/Provision.pm line 1279

I can ping the existing samba dc by name or IP

My first question is 'should' I be able to join this domain?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Migrate single Exchange Mailbox
« on: March 18, 2014, 11:14:38 am »
Thanks Stuart,

I was wondering 'how the AD knows where to send a users email'?

It makes migration and testing very easy if we can leave the users on their Windows Exchange server and just migrate one or 2 to Zentyal/OpenChange while we test.

How do I migrate just one mailbox from Exchange to Zentyal OpenChange?

Do I have to modify a setting in Active Directory, or is it a property I can set in the Zentyal management interface?

TIA  Simon.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Windows 7 Joining Domain

Ah, thanks Christian, I am trying to learn Windows as I go along :-)

My samba 3 domains seem to just need the NetBIOS name.

Still, working now :-)   GRAND.

THANK YOU Robb, I'm not sure what fixed it but you pointed me to EXACTLY the right place :-)

I did not have the DNS set to the Zentyal server (I do now)

I was trying to join the "NetBIOS domain name"  MYDOMAIN

It only works if you join the "Realm"  MYDOMAIN.CO.UK

Strange but true?

Is there a good explanation as to what each of these are?

Installation and Upgrades / Windows 7 Joining Domain
« on: March 09, 2014, 10:55:46 am »
Hi All, I have freshly installed a Zentyal 3.3 Community Edition and updated.  I can not get a Win7 RC1 to join the domain.

I have applied the reg patch and tested with other Win7 laptops but no go.

I am reading about 'realms', 'netbios domains' and 'dns domains' but have become somewhat confused.

Is there a definitive checklist or summary that I can follow to make sure I have all the above parameters set correctly?

TIA

Simon
