allereerste bedankt voor je input en het meedenken.
er is echter wel 1 puntje waar ik toch wat aandacht op wil vestigen.
zentyal is nu nog een behoorlijk kleinschalig (zelfs in vergelijking met de ubuntu-nl) iets in nederland,
bovendien hebben we effectief 2 voor de community relatief zeer grote nadelen.
1: zentyal is behoorlijk windows-gebaseerd met samba4 en zarafa als grootste (min)punten.
2: zentyal is een diepgeworteld managed platform (wat zoveel wil zeggen als dont think out of the box).
beiden zijn nadelig voor 'opensource enthousiasten' omdat het het gebruik van een all-opensource netwerk in de weg staat, neem ubuntu als client op de desktop ... het kan wel maar is aanzienlijk minder ontwikkeld binnen het zentyal framwork... dan zijn windows evenknie. maar denk ook eens aan thunderbird (al dan niet aangevult met lightning) die samen nog niet in de buurt komen van wat MS outlook te bieden heeft. dit laatste niet alleen omdat tbird en lightning nu zo slecht zijn maar voornamelijk ook omdat zarafa geen calldav/carddav ondersteunt. iets dat bijv egroupware wel doet... dat maakt een geheel opensource oplossing lastig, en tot op zekere hoogte minderwaardig aan een windows oplossing ... iets wat voor de echte linux lover een doorn in het oog zal blijken..
om die reden zou ik in eerste instantie ook vooral ook willen hebben voor potentiele gebruikers, mensen die misschien al wel weten wat linux (ubuntu) is maar die het nog nooit hebben geassocieerd met een MS vervanger voor op het werk of op school (of zelfs thuis)
3 (voor mij) relevante topics die ik heel graag op 1 evenement samen zou willen zien komen zijn dan bijv:
> introductie zentyal voor windows administrators,
> hoe samba4 voor je te laten werken in plaats van tegen
> ubuntu als een professionele desktop (inclusief de koppeling naar zentyal)
maar ik ben vooral ook benieuwd naar wat anderen graag op zo'n dag zouden tegenkomen, wellicht kunnen we zo'n lijstje ook naar frederik mailen om als zo doende samen te kunnen werken.

@robb, ik gok dat er in appril of mei weer een ubuntu install party georganseerd zal worden, in gouda...
ik vraag me af of het wenselijk is om in overleg met hen te gaan om aan te sluiten... we hebben immers genoeg raakvlakken met ubuntu en de organisatie met ons om zoiets voor te stellen...

even the admin 'thingy can be circomvented really by just adding the user to the specific user groups and granding the user to the 'system group for administrator users...
most of the diferences are either not important... expempt for 1 bigg issue, you DONT get quality assure updates meaning ... each and every update can potentially completely destroy your server.... because they are not managed by zentyal but by ubuntu community.
they makes that you absolutelly MUST test-drive all your updates before you deploy them on a live server... (if your not a adrenaline junky that is)...

are you able to resolve your server's FQDN...
and what / who is your dhcp server... and dns server...
is it done by a router or by your zentyal box... is your zentyal box configure to be also winS and what about joing its netbios name rather than its full qualified domainhost name

i would recomend posting more detailed information about both the configuration of that particular client, a client that is working correctly and your zentyal machine...
that way those who might have some knowledge could notice a potential cause if there is any...

i kind of share with Rob...
zentyal > server > grafical interface > atracts newby users > forum gets flooded with al kinds of zentyal unrelated questions ...
i strongly feal that if the topic starter reads more about everyigng in advance he would probably not have choosen zentyal, but depending on his needs if compercial: plain ubuntu or for hobby and home: something like amahi.org
unless you want to have a single lan controlling server with additional features, but than i would recomment installing these hosting and media serving / transcoding services on a virtual machine on top of zentyals VM management module....

So what's the impact aside deployment easiness (which is already a good point) ?
- It can't address, at least today, medium to large organisations or IT landscape (furthermore, in such landscape, targeting "all-in-one" design is meaningless)
- Do not expect to customize "your" LDAP server because it's now tightly linked (like in real Microsoft world) to Samba requirements. Zentyal design will be dictated, from LDAP standpoint, to what Samba will permit. Same for Kerberos and DNS although this has less impact in real life.
- "Light" Zentyal deployment will not exist anymore: if you thought about deploying Zentyal as internet gateway only (meaning without office related components), drop this idea as Samba will be required as core component. No criticism here: with "all-in-one" design choice, this makes sense. But medium to large organisations will most of the time not go in this direction.
so that is why i dont understand your next point, so far so good, because its not JUST about business its also about technical choices.

From technical and intellectual standpoint, this is not my own choice. Yes AD does the job but with so many drawbacks that it kills any capability to design and deploy something that has not been "Microsoft approved". Samba is taking same direction... Why, starting from scratch, would you want to reproduce same behaviour? Well, to be able to integrate into existing landscape and take market share. I do respect this but this is not my own job.
I've no personal interest in deploying Microsoft infrastructurebut I do understand it has some efficiency. At least you don't need any IT architect and sysadmin
