Installation and Upgrades / Re: Issues after recent package updates
« on: December 07, 2012, 04:57:46 pm »
Robb says he is testing it in the dutch forum. It would seem you will have to use google translate to see if our community manager has results.

If it was me I would trust sixtone. The Zentyal devs are pretty shit hot.

Not sure omeyer because of the huge number of dependencies if the pinning keeps versions over security updates and as things are added there is a chance down the line over time that it might.
Zentyal is slowly moving away from there repo's to becoming an all ubuntu repo, so I thought anyway.

Even though I was great full of your fix I decided just to wait as I don't like making any changes of forcing dependencies.

I have in the past and then found a long way down the line, circular dependencies "dependency hell" where I have been unable to find a route out.

I am just playing safe, its been fixed don't deviate. Just a rule of thumb for me.

http://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,13312.msg55117.html#msg55117

All back to normal and mega fast turn around from the zentyal staff.
Slow reaction to highlight the bug though in my opinion as it was an obvious stopper and dangerous.

Anyway remove the pinning or you will prob run into problems.

Also maybe we could have a hidden forum that the mods can post to and we could have an rss feed in the admin gui.

Community RSS server feed or something.

Its not really zentyal's fault as its easy to get into dependency hell as its not ubuntu's for releasing a security update.

Dunno if we can control it or should try but maybe try and get some sort of early warning system out that is there infront of us at a server level.

Stuart.

Why is it always me trashed the server on the last thing I needed to complete and ended up stuck in an office all night because I had stated I was doing an all nighter. Didn't have the keys or alarm code to leave and it was to frigging late to be ringing people.

Sam throw a date up there so they can see its current.

Where is the community manager when you need one ?  ;)

Anyway this has me thinking we need a community RSS feed in the web-console where moderators can escalate a bug quickly.

It could just be a hidden forum with moderator access and we can view the results via RSS.

The forum for me due to international timezones is the first port of call and if bugs come in that validate your problem as an obvious bug. Then its time for trac, I don't like to flood trac so that it is concise and a good tool for the dev's.

I know I have said this before but we are all here because of Zentyal and Zentyal technologies.

We have a huge forum section on Zentyal Desktop which as far as I can make out doesn't even have any development.
In my opinion shouldn't have as proscribing a desktop as a only solution rather than giving the tools to cater for many distro's, this and has been a M$ mistake.
Why we have this huge section for an ill advised initiative is beyond me as for a start it doesn't really exist.

Then we have international boards that separates us into isolated islands of language. Personally I don't give a s*** where I am from or what language I read. I have chromium browser at the ready and it will translate all the languages into something that I can understand.

I am here because of the technology and everything is posted into one forum which in terms of intelligent data and data normalisation, fubar is the only term that comes to mind.

We have a logical structure that is represented by the technologies we use. That structure is already presented in a logical way via the documentation.

That logical structure should be replicated in every activity we use. Its that simple and it would return metrics and a huge amount of value to how we use and what we see of value.

It doesn't mean we have to lose any localisations it just means we need to use the full capabilities of this forum or another product if that is deemed the way to go.

The current forum is i18n capable and we can all still stay in groups of localisation but as child forums of the technologies we are interested in.
Depending on geodb data the forum will change to your localisation.

This way we can post against DNS and because we are all posting in particular forum this will highlight rapidly any problems we are receiving.

Also the forum search engine is geared to search by forum and section so you can get more concise results.

Then when it comes to Open Source and the bible on good software we seem to be over looking some key points.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cathedral_and_the_Bazaar#Guidelines_for_creating_good_open_source_software

6.   Treating your users as co-developers is your least-hassle route to rapid code improvement and effective debugging.
8.   Given a large enough beta-tester and co-developer base, almost every problem will be characterized quickly and the fix obvious to someone.
9.   Smart data structures and dumb code works a lot better than the other way around.
11.  If you treat your beta-testers as if they're your most valuable resource, they will respond by becoming your most valuable resource.
12.   The next best thing to having good ideas is recognizing good ideas from your users. Sometimes the latter is better.
13.   Often, the most striking and innovative solutions come from realizing that your concept of the problem was wrong.
19.   Provided the development coordinator has a communications medium at least as good as the Internet, and knows how to lead without coercion, many heads are inevitably better than one.

Number 9 is so obvious with this forum as its data structure is on a par with ishat, in the dumb stakes.

I don't think we need to change platform, I think its about time to utilize what SMF have to offer.
We need to intergrate things and stop adding separate and disparate functionality into the community site.

It needs someone with a bit of vision who has the interest of the community in mind whilst has the intelligence that the data capture of usage and interest is highly valuable commercial data for Zentyal.

Its not all that hard to accomplish and I am 44 and now totally bald, so I can't pull my hair out any more.

All I ask is for you to take a step back forget the past and come up with a good solution, as it isn't and its obvious.

Stuart

Thanks omeyer +1

It is just a work around as it could cause later dependency problems and this is just a quick fix.

Haven't tried it as have been waiting for a response to an obvious stopper.

Use it for now until fixed then remove pinning.

Good post and maybe that is all that is needed from zentyal to reorder the service start or at least delay samba +1

37
I have a feeling that when some is as serious as an update will kill your server. Then more should be done than just wait.

It should be made pretty clear, DON'T UPDATE (apt-get upgrade).

It is no biggy or loss of faith in stating so and stops potential damage to current installs.

Its also a point that actually in the cloud services it might be wise to have an RSS feed that could warn sys admins.

Doing nothing and just waiting whilst more people are hit isn't a good policy.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Better way to sync two zentyals
« on: December 07, 2012, 12:49:01 pm »
The user sync is a master / slave topology where the slave will synchronise to the master.

The additional domain controller is full active directory replication but for me it doesn't work.

I have tried just to get a simple yes / no to if this feature works. No answer.

With my efforts and from what others have posted I will be taking this as a no.

39
Yeah funny as with users being a pain when doing work, I was doing an overnight. I was locked in an office and have just got home.

Having coffee as there is only so much solitaire that one man can take.

40
I dunno thats a huge problem, they should be warning us not to update. This denial thing is so unprofessional and negates trust.

Try IRC but I doubt you will get an answer

I did have two servers but forced samba due to a situation where I didn't have any time.

The ubuntu repo and zentyal repo are out of sync and the answer is a big no until its fixed.

Have two downed servers with no user module and can't even install from fresh.

What zentyal should be doing if they had any value to there community is to warn users of dns, users and samba to not do any updates until the situation is fixed.

42
The ubuntu repos and zentyal repos are out of sync. I unfortunately was adding the last bit to two servers in a rush and it has completely killed them. Users DNS and Samba just will not install. Remove samba and it removes the lot and you can't put them back.

43
Its gone to crown which is not good so you still have me until the 21st of Jan. YipPee!

Bloody good question Robb.

I guess like you say it provides an indication for zentyal and 3rd party dev's.

My opinion is its another ill placed and poorly executed addition to the community that had no input from the community.

Its tucked away like many of the blogs in what is a truly disjointed community site.

They could of used a module or made a module that becomes part of a slick community interface and maybe stayed with the forum.

That way discussion, idea, documentation, polls could all link and we could get some metrics on what is of worth to the community.

One thing I like about the oxwall site and that is there community site and not there script offering is they have a market place. Where users can post a budget on there requirements and receive offers from devs to the costs of implementations.

http://www.oxwall.org/market

Personally I feel the whole community site is disjointed and poorly organised and adding more items is just adding to confusion.

Hey everybody I am so apologetic as I know, I have brought to much angst to the forum.
I am passionate and I believe in zentyal not being just a product, collaborative meritocracy, pushing for a fairer more efficient solution.
Getting it right.
Two guys on here that I hold in the utmost respect are Sam Graff and Christian.
There knowledge and out look is truly outstanding.
I am apologetic because I have totally enjoyed finding some real voices with knowledge and I know I have been pushing to hard.
For me open source and collaboration isn't just a technical geek thing its a modern morality.
Lol I know, how it sounds but hey, I spent a year in South Africa and to be honest it has changed my life and perspective.

I have been really critical about the project because I believe in it.

I am court tomorrow and I am going to tell them to F*** off. Can't think of a better way to do it.
Hit a wave of depression as the last two years haven't gone my way.
I have been certain that I believe in open source meritocracy and very much a open source left winger.
I am back purely to get the community centres I have been involved with using samba4 and not M$.

I had this grand plan of open source and providing a solution that doesn't entrap users into a product racket.
Its been a total failure and in my sphere of educating grannies, displaced kids and generally the under privileged I have been trapped.
I have provided several centres with total open source solutions and can't get past the barriers of council education.

The tutors have M$ qualifications and teach only M$ products, show people Itunes and state that they are expensive but don't show alternatives.

Anyway I have had my own problems and an avid open source fanatic for want of better words. So much so I have refused to use M$ as a server product. With XP all was well, Vista was a thankfully a disaster but win7 has been a killer.
I have a two contracts left and been pretty much breadline for two years now.

I have been preaching Zentyal 3 and I know it will get there. Thing is if it is going to get any professional kudos then you can't release a beta. A Beta it is, and has been for a while.

Its a superb product and I believe it will be, but you can't release and advertise a product as it has been in its current state.
It just loses faith and it can have huge impacts on those who expect a normal cycle of a release to work.
Its simple its either a working bug checked release or you state that the bleeding edge is so and use as so.

The amount of users that have run into problems with 3 and looked at zentyal as a flaky product and gone elsewhere is truly depressing. All was needed was more conversation to the community.

This is open-source and be open, say it is how it is. That is why it is more efficient, that is why your users benefit via contribution.
Organic meritocracies are not gay, religious tree hugging freaks. If you have enough experience in IT then nothing is black and white. Denial and not being open just wastes time and doesn't indicate to knowledge users where there skills might be beneficial.

The trade mark of zentyal alone if allowed to move in similar directions to products such as MySql could make the original crowd very wealthy. There are huge financial incentives to be reaped.

This will never happen by blind allegiance and drunken friendships. It isn't fair to the community for a few to party and dictate on there own ego's.

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Structure/Governance

It is so obvious its not a meritocracy, firstly the community council is top heavy and consists mainly of commercial zentyal staff.
That is not a community council.
I did for a brief moment become a community council member and was just stunned by the ego of the council as for some reason they believe they know better than the users of the product.
Going back to Sam and Christian the community is in good hands.

Sorry Rob and Ishat, but wow guys look at everything you have forwarded, been involved with... Its so far from a meritocracy it is just deeply sad.

That is just my opinion, but if you are going to have a meritocracy as stated then do so. If this is going to be the control of a SADFL then please state so. Just don't pretend in the long term that it is something that it plainly isn't.

Why can't the community vote and provide indication to members of value. This doesn't mean it that its set in stone and always up to the SADFL to adjudicate.

So anyway I have gone bank, my probs. Court thing is a bit of a worry as I haven't a clue where my mind was at. Generally I apologise and to a few I do actually have a huge amount of respect for and best wishes.

Wish the project the best but by providing more discussion to the community and being transparent increases trust and participation. Stop the commercial denial as its losing trust.

Stuart.

Best wishes seriously.

Installation and Upgrades / RAID Device & State not displayed correctly
« on: December 04, 2012, 04:43:07 pm »
I have recently been adding a new drive to my raid array.

Whilst the array was reshaping I noticed that the webgui and mdadm where not in sync.

I believe the info from mdadm more than the webgui.

It should of showed that device 4 was down but in the web gui it showed device 3 down and device 4 up.

Prob just a script typo and the field showing status might be out of sync with device status
