News and Announcements / ebox-egroupware ready for testing
« on: February 25, 2009, 06:32:45 pm »
We  are pleased to announce the release of a new eBox module that integrates eGroupware into the eBox universe. We are certain that this new module will help many users who are in the need of having a complete groupware  solution plus the bunch of the amazing services already provided by eBox.

Having eGroupware in eBox means that you will take full advantage of all its modules out of the box, bringing to eBox new features such as: calendar sharing, address book, webmail and much more.

We have worked to provide you with a seamless integration of eGroupware and eBox. Thanks to our LDAP backend,  users and groups created in eBox will show up in your eGroupware installation. And of course, the necessary mail infrastructure is also provided by eBox.

We have just uploaded the first beta version to our unstable repository and it's ready to be tested by the community. Give it a shot and let us know what you think about it. A ready-to-go groupware solution is just one "apt-get install"  away on eBox now :)

Hi guys,

We have just added a new feature to our traffic shaping module: layer 7 filter.

We are using l7-filter http://l7-filter.sf.net to mark network packets based on its content. This is pretty useful for those of you who are in the need of throttling traffic that can use different ports. Shaping p2p traffic is mucheasier with this new feature.

We are using the kernel space version of l7-filter at the moment. We plan toswitch to the user space version in a few months.

This version of l7-filter needs a patched kernel and patched iptables. But don'tworry just follow the steps below if you want to test it:

To install these packages add the following lines  to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

Code: [Select]
deb http://ebox-platform.com/testing/packages/l7kernel ./
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ebox-unstable/ubuntu hardy main

Once you have added the apt sources run:

Code: [Select]
apt-get update

First of all, we need to install the pactched kernel by running:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-19-l7filter

Now you will have to reboot to be able to use the new kernel.

If you manage to boot with the new kernel, the next step is installing the patched iptables package and ebox-l7-protocols:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ebox-l7-protocols iptables

If everything goes ok, you will be able to access and configure eBox through the web interface.

Note that the eBox traffic shaping module is meant to be used when your machine is acting as gateway, and you can shape on internal interfaces for ingress shaping and on external interfaces for egress shaping.

Don't forget you will have to enable the firewall and add rules to accept traffic from your internal networks to internet.

Enjoy

News and Announcements / eBox 0.12 is ready to rock
« on: August 31, 2008, 06:18:23 pm »
Hi guys,

We have uploaded eBox 0.12 to our testing repositories.

You can read more about this release here: http://ebox-platform.com/archives/2008/08/28/67-ebox-012-is-ready-to-rock/

Hi fellow eBox users,

We are glad to announce the release of eBox 0.11.100 for Ubuntu. This release provides the same functionality and modules as the Debian Sarge version.

It is based on Ubuntu 8.04 which already ships some eBox 0.11.99 modules. 0.11.100 polishes some rough edges found in 0.11.99 and adds the following modules:

- traffic shaping
- mail
- mail filter
- jabber
- software

This release represents a significant leap forward for the eBox platform. Now you will take advantage of the improvements and new features of the last available stable version for most of the services which are managed by eBox: samba, cups (new printer drivers), squid, dansguardian, postfix, amavis...

We have created a custom cd installer based on Ubuntu Hardy server to ease the installation process, just like we did with the Debian Sarge version.

Enjoy!!!

News and Announcements / eBox 0.11 testing packages for Ubuntu Gutsy
« on: January 16, 2008, 04:43:36 pm »
Hi fellow eBox users!

Your favourite development team has been working very hard to bring you a
first preview of an Ubuntu Gutsy based eBox 0.11.

Porting eBox to a new platform involves changes in all the modules,
and while a lot of care has been taken in this process, you will probably
find some rough edges. That's why your help is so important to us. Your
reports are our most valuable resource in our effort to gradually polish
the platform, so be sure to report these issues.

Important Disclaimer
This is an alpha version and it's not intended to be used in production
systems at all. Please be advised that your system might end up in an
unusable state.

Remember that eBox overwrites configuration for some network services,
so it’s not recommended to have them previously configured (or their
configuration could be lost).

eBox is meant to be run in a dedicated machine.

Known issues
The backup system is not working at the moment. You will be able to backup
and restore simple configurations. However, you will experience problems
when restoring backups from previous versions.

Logs are not working.

Events are not working.

Most of the packages do not comply with the Ubuntu Packaging Policy yet.
Note that these packages are not official Ubuntu packages.

We have temporarily gone back to apache 1.3.x as we are having some issues with apache2.

List of available modules
  • ebox
  • ebox-services
  • ebox-objects
  • ebox-network
  • ebox-firewall

Pending modules (work in progress, due in a few days)
  • ebox-ntp

  • ebox-jabber
  • ebox-webserver

How to install
First of all, you need an Ubuntu Gutsy distro. We usually download the
server version from here http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubuntu-7.10-server-i386.iso

Go through the installation process. Once you are done add these two lines to
/etc/apt/sources.lists

Code: [Select]
deb http://ebox-platform.com/ubuntu/gutsy/unstable/ ebox/
deb http://ebox-platform.com/ubuntu/gutsy/unstable/ extra/

Save the file and execute the following command:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update

You can either install the modules you need or all the eBox modules by
executing:

Code: [Select]
export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive
sudo apt-get install ebox-all

Every time you install a new module you will have to restart apache:

Code: [Select]
sudo /etc/init.d/ebox apache restart

Acknowledgments
Thanks to the Ubuntu developers who started the eBox packaging process for
Ubuntu. It's been very useful to keep working from that point.
