Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal in a home situation
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:31:59 pm »
no it will not,    unlesse some home-use antosiasts start building those modules in thair own time..

zentyal is already a complicated piece of work, adding stuf like a media server would requie a whole diferent set of  rulles  firewall settings and would hardly get any revenue for the devs (mind you they need food on the table to)...

you might want to like for  amahi  instead...  it will eventually get ported to ubuntu too and its completely geared to home use...   an other option would be  freenas 0.7x  - but thats bsd based  and more of a nas with torrent and media server  rather than a real sever...

425
ive used egroupware in the passed too i worked perfectly with my nokia e71 and tbird  mail clients ...

i hav'nt tried zarafa  yet... but it seams promissing... im not sure if it would actually since well with those to...  but gnome's evolition is supposed to work with call dav  if i remember correctly  or there must be at least a few that could work well with the comunity version of zarafa ???

any way... going for a one stop solution rather than a mixed-problems setup ...  could be worth investigating..  and i dont even think it would be hard to  do a transition either...

426
what i mean is,  >a let zentyal manage packes as mutch as possible it will do just fine...  >b  never use auto dependancy installers  - unless you know for 100% sure they wont interfere with your current installation...  (as zentyal manages that)...

thus dont run a 'sudo apt get install joomla    but rather install it by hand so you KNOW it would brake...

also dont install alternatives to for example  mail servers firewall deamons    and stuff like that... as part of any package you might wanna install...

if you for instance find a handy-dandy script to install  x-application   open in in a textpadd first and check its not going to break things...

and if your not sure ask first...  most or us rather tell you in advance  than having to spent hours helping fix an already broken server.

427
meaning  disable firewall on both these  'interlink' ports and try to get connectivity..

428
do however realize that zentyal a complete system based on ubuntu thuis any ubuntu software can work.. there is a BUT ...

SOME  ubuntu software  uses parts and software that also is used by zentyal... if you know what your doing this shouldn't be a problem  BUT - running the  auto installer script for any package that  uses packages the same as zentyal - or packes conflicting with zentyal  - the system may break  or even get unrecoverable...

you should ALWAYS  first  check the discription and dependancies of a package  and determin if it wil be compatible..

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Cannot Make call using SIP
« on: August 11, 2011, 02:34:58 pm »
my gues check your  e71  to see if the outgoing call isn't going trough your  mobile service provider  rather than  your  sip provider

430
as soon as your  fiber connection  goes out of your network, (no matter if its a dedicated line). i would set up a vpn...   it will make some stuf easier  ir you rout them trough a vpn module.  also if speed and stuf concerns your you could also  just use a weaker encryption (example  128 bit rather than  2048 bit...

at least you want to make sure that...

site a  is network compatible with site b...

for example    call the network  in berlin    berlin.yourcompani.com   where is your office in paris    paris.yourcompany.com     and have both dhcp  ranges difer   exaomple     192.168.0 /24 for site a  and   192.168.1 /24 for site b..   that way your shure that any computer in site a could reach site b...  and visa versa.

anyway if its a local connection  define the interface as wan interface,  and than get your hands dirty configuring the interface manually... its a bit of work figuring out routing from within linux ..  but it has al the tools you need to ebale a "default route"   from   network a to network b and so on...

431
my question - even though  citadel seams a nice piece of software, would be,  what cervices from citadel are you actually using... because  if its mostly mail services,   and you really want more control over your network why not try to see if migration to zentyal all in  could be worth it...

specially  after the release of  2.2 in month or 2  -  you could easily try if zarafa can do the same for you...
you could than  run all services on your zentyal box

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Ubuntu as Zentyal Client

christian  - though i can emagine your view point, im not completely agreaing...

lets first set 2 type of users...

1st:  end users (this can be end users, or unskilled system administrators).
with these types of users  i would most definetly agrea,

but there are also   power users...  these users ar allways trying to implement stuf in a non standard way...
these are the guy's who  would install  joomla on  a server and make it talk with  ldap...  these are the guys creating nifty winshell scripts to fix a requirement not met by zentyal yet...

the problem with these kind of users is often that they can, or maybe even  allready did  fix a certain problem.. but they just dont because its to mutch work..    what i want is to find these users in the crowd and encourrage them to help me  creating documentation.. building quick fixes that could be later  intergrated into zentyal..

take ltps for example...  we all seem to want it...   but no-one as of yet has posted a tread like...
"hey so if we go for ltps,  maybe we should  build it  based on....    %desktop%   $browser$  and  set_office-client  -   %package% could be configured to do  $action$  thus creating   &result;

you might be reluctant to  tell programmers what to do  or not to do...  but here is the deal... if you dont
they'd have to start from scratch and it will take  %time%  to organise test and practice software... this is tast that anyone could have done...

if you do five of these projects changes are  1 or 2 (or maybe 4)  will never be implemented for  reasons only known to the zentyal staff..  or maybe some other forum member had better luck with a different app..
but if you document the steps you took to set it up...  there will allways be so many people benefitting.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Ubuntu as Zentyal Client

there is one more thing that im considering...

when i read the proposal to intergrate a dms  a lot of people was calling for.... dont bloat the server it will get to slow  etc etc etc..  and though i did not agrea with that statement in that usercase BUT it was a valid warning..

and i think it applies to the here and now...   ergo  "lets think hard about ever installing ltsp on the same box as zentyal server.  since ltsp is kind of tought on system resources it might be better to have it installed on special equiped servers.    my point is 'when designing a zentyal desktop' make it as lightweight as possible,   build an ltps server  that can join your zentyal network via a setup wizard (or something in that spirit).

and only put the management interface on the zentyal box...

radius if im informed correctly is a way to authenticate serveral kind's of services via user + password   with any database backend possible (thus also ldap)...

what i think must be done is building a simple  lightweight desktop  based un ubuntu witch should be logging in against the  zentyal ldap db...

if you want roaming profiles  it should also mount  mount a remote directory as its profile dir  in /home/$username$    but thats not part of the SSO ...

while reading this document -  creating a ubuntu iso with these packages preconfigured ..??? should be able to fix all the problems stated here above without near to no changes to the server...

i think that a think-tank post / forum / wiki or whatever should be installed to  think over these kind of features.. selecting packages for sucht a desktop and remastring an iso to accomplish this.  and after that  proposing a specefic list of functions that should be added to zentyal to accomdate this intergration...

the lot of us really should start on telling developers  what to code  rather than what idea to come up with... i know many of them are really smart  but even they only have 2 hands and 1 brain...

to comment on what rob says.

we allready HAVE  ldap.. we have radius   we have lots of other stuf..

we dont have zentyal desktop ...    we should build our own  desktop version of ubuntu based on a subset of ubuntu repositories, and the base install  using  pam-auth-ldap  for loging in... or for example  using radius to enforce settings like most users are familiar with  when using windows..

in my view..  that same ubuntu subset desktop could be the base for any future ltps plan...

idd be willing to document this.. but i would require some help in a few aspects allong the way...
