Installation and Upgrades / Re: Z. 3.5 Nightmare
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:57:38 am »
Well it is working now. :)
I have re-installed two days ago and before i did any configuration on i have upgraded the software.
The only thing that i can think it had an influence is that i have reduced to minimum the number of modules installed. I did not configure nothing else except for network (interfaces and gateways ). Firewall
DNS, Domain with users, Mail and Mailfilter, and webmail. that's it. (now the problem is that when bind is asked about domain it also respond with the private IP...)

It is missing cloud client connection since i did not want to set it up and some other features but it seems that it is working.
I did not found any real cause on why it didn't work before (6 installs from scratch...) but I'm glad it works now.

So in short, keep it to minimum with no extra modules like IDS or monitoring or nothing else and it should work.
@tigerman: I'm not sure on how i can help you but give me an email and i'll respond to you.

Best regards
Bogdan

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal 3.5 + mail (without openchange)

Hi Aja,
Yes it is possible, in Outlook/Thunderbird go to account settings and at server enter your server address and then select the ports to conect to pop3 and smtp.
Follow the documentation on
Thunderbird https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/manual-account-configuration and
Outlook http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/outlook-help/add-an-email-account-by-using-advanced-settings-HA010371264.aspx on how to connect to a server.

Best regards

Hi Robb,
The install was from the cd. I've dld the 64 bit iso and then proceed with the install.

The normal process for install was like this: condfig all the interfaces, then gateways, dns forwarders, Internet dns , mail server setup, domain/users webserver and webmail....

This sequence of setting tings up has worked for me before but now.... and i do have experience in seting up zentyal...

Installation and Upgrades / [Solved...] Z. 3.5 Nightmare
« on: September 02, 2014, 11:20:38 am »
Well after 4 days and 4 re-installs from scratch i have a couple of issues that i can't figure out.

The main issue is that 3.5 64bit is very unreliable. I installed DNS, Mail, Mailfilter, Users, (with samba...) Firewall, Webmail, Network...

The server is used as my SOHO with two ISP connections. After the configuration of both external interfaces with the proper address  the Load balancing and wan failover are a mess.
The same GW and is used even if is down.... and there is no load-balance...

The (samba) Domain is crashing (maybe because is having two external GW ?)
After the crash the users and group disappeared !?!

After configuring the mail server and mailfilter they can't be started and unable to be restarted no matter what you try.

DNS is not able to function only with the two public IP's it requires the internal ip too... i've let it like this but it will provide the public ip when will be asked about the internet domain...

when DNS it is queryed about host.domain.com it presents only 1 ip! not both of them even if the ip are set in the DNS host section. And if the ip is down (one gw fails) the other can't be accessed (so the second ISP is useless) because is not provided when asked about hostname...

The firewall does not contain the services for Mail, Mail submission, SMTP, POP3 to be enable  ... even if the modules are installed ?!?!

So overall the server is down and can't be used only for Mail and webserver. I did not want to install Open exchange and it seems that this is the result (4 time in a row of re-install's!!!)

Can someone tell me if you had any of this issues and how did you solve them?
Otherwise the only solution i see is to temporarlly install 3.2 or other....

News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal 4.0 Roadmap Published!

There is a lesson to be learned here for us the community and for the company / devs.
Some things change in ways that we do not agree...

I think Zentyal V4+ will be a good replacement for a Linux AD/Exchange instead of Microsoft. This is a good thing for those who are looking for this.
For the rest of the community (In my humble opinion) this is not what we had in mind, I for one, was looking for a SBS in a box solution to replace all those MS and Linux boxes.

For now let's wish the Zentyal staff and devs good luck.
The rest of us can still use the previous versions of Zentyal (2.0 - 3.3). Or use a combination of Gateway/Firewall/Server from different provides.

If there is a "demand" we can start a thread of "Alternative setup solutions and configs " to compensate for the dropped modules.
And of course if the Zentyal guys do not mind starting such a thread.

I wish you luck and best regards
Bogdan

PS: if i offended someone please edit/correct my post.

I'll share my opinion on the "new" announcement and maybe will help someone see things different.

I've been using Zentyal for some years only at home. I could not make any commercial project with it, I've come across  Zentyal in search of a small SBS 2003 replacement. After years of MS administration i've seen that ebox was doing more than the windows server could do.
As compared to windows you could have one box and do the tasks of three boxes.

However, not having all the features complete to replace a SBS 2003 the customers rejected the proposal of having to do without some features.
Also the fact that the "stable" release was not so stable was another big issue.

After a time i have seen that Zentyal has changed the way they developed the software more to the MS style.
As another user say'd before. It was all in a box and that was great! Now you see yourself without the things that make it great and just a MS clone.
Then the question arises... Why not go with MS since it is the same ? At least the price for a 2012 server is 500$ for 25 clients ? and i can sure create a small mail server on it with programs for windows ?

You can say that: "Ok but it is free".
Correct, but it is not quite free if you think that for each glitch or error encountered the client will pay you to solve it.

You can also say that you still have Open Change that works great with outlook
Correct but does it work "great"? No and there are issues. And Outlook is not the absolute tool. There are other tools used in Enterprises (Ex: Lotus Notes)

Do not get me wrong. I love that Zentyal (Ebox) exists. But in the current form not in what will become.
The strategy that "we want to do it our way and listen to nobody" will sure be the downfall for Zentyal. Adopting the same policy as Ubuntu because of previous success is not a good thing.
You have to listen to the requirements of the consumers / customers, otherwise they will turn on you.

Create software for the customers not for you. Or you will be the only one to use it.
I love Open source and I've use it as much as I can. I agree that the developers should get something in return for the work and time invested in this.
But let's keep it real if something like MS (the principal target of Zentyal ) comes to the market with prices like 500$ or 800$ you can't have any business.

Again: Listen to the consumers / users / customers. They ask and you should provide.
Getting something like Zentyal for free is a great thing and we appreciate this. The people using the free community version in their commercial project should donate a couple of bucks.

Keep in mind that Microsoft has changed and adapted their strategies to beat the linux distros. They are adapting, and  Zentyal is acting in reverse.
drop more of the modules and you will end up just a MS server but with no future.

Think again what were the things that make Zentyal great, where are you going to, and what the people are telling you now...

Best regards
Bogdan

News and Announcements / Re: High Availability in Zentyal Server 3.4
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:24:33 am »
Is this only related to services that apear to be as "pass trough" like dns, fw and vpn ? In this regards it sounds like the CARP protocol.
The HA feature is a very big step forward for Zentyal but my question is if this will also be available for Mail, HTTP and other services?

My question might sound stupid for some but i do not see (for now at least) if with the 3.4 i can use HA and also load balancing for my setup (3 WAN's, Mail server, mysql and http server).
Also for the quorum, if the machine will fail (and also an incident occures) so will the nodes, in this regards the third machine has to have better specs than the average of the total machines.

As i have stated above, the HA feature is huge but if it is not for the right services then it is not to much of use.
I hope that i did not put my foot in my mouth with this  :) but for now this is how I see things.

Thank you Julien,
I'll do an upgrade and then see if it is ok.

Thank you Otoh,
I'll have to see what i'll do next since i can't set manually the ip of the server. (i'm using two lines to get to that server)
But it seems to be more close to the M$ kind of dooing things that we like it to be ("features" that are not announced but are "available" to use)...

After reading this I just have a go to my own server via the roundcube interface and after using a valid username I just entered a random string in pasword field and the inbox was displayed!

I confirm that this issue is also present on my system.

This is a big problem since by default the security at least should be set to use password from ldap.
I'll have to disable the roundcube service for now until this is solved, so nobody should gain access to users mailbox by just typing a random text

PS i have the 3.2 version and not the 3.3.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Thunderbird configurations with Zentyal
« on: November 23, 2013, 02:21:19 pm »
I think that you have a problem with the correct settings.
In thunderbird you have to specify mail.test.lan since your domain is test.lan and your host (the server) is named mail
So at the IMAP and SMTP fields you have to enter the correct full qualified domain name mail.test.lan.
If the server name is not mail replace mail with the proper hostname! or just try by putting the ip instead of name

Regarding the dns, only the reverse is done by My ISP the rest is done by me local

Can you explain this ? I'm totally clueless about how this could work  :-[

ok :) Christian I've made public my email address to the profile. I can show you the config and this i think should be more explanatory than i can put into words.
This is why i wanted to create a short how-to and maybe a "good practice" example.
For obvious reasons i can't make the screens available on the forum  ;D

:)
Testing the wan.... hmm
Well that would be, to have it get http headers with at least 75% rate :)
