News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal 4.0 Roadmap Published!
« on: July 29, 2014, 10:36:34 pm »
Just another small business sysadmin here who has deployed Zentyal, both professional and community, at several business and schools.

I'd like to chime in to say that this roadmap is severely disappointing to me and has me scrambling for alternatives to Zentyal.  I've been able to understand the removal of modules in the past that were used only by a niche market, such as ltsp or kvm, but these changes are very confusing.

What small business doesn't want a built-in backup system on their servers?  Are you expecting everyone to be using a sophisticated visualized environment where data backup is performed outside of the server instance?  If modules like backup, IPS, and UPS, which are huge perks to Zentyal for my usage, are working fine currently, is the development load really too incredibly high to continue hosting them with their current functionality?

I agree that instead of dropping modules like hotcakes Zentyal should seriously consider making everything so modular that "cumbersome" features could be easily developed and maintained by the community.  This would increase both the commercial and community appeal substantially...

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Problems with Samba shares with 2.0.16
« on: December 05, 2011, 05:05:26 pm »
Have you upgraded samba but not rebooted recently? I had the http://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,8867.0.html same problem. Samba permissions were fixed after rebooting, re-editing & saving the troublesome share permissions. You should then find that they work again :)

Well, I did restart several times... but in the end it seems that my problem wasn't with permissions after all.  Instead, I seem to have been plagued with lingering settings from the uninstalled antivirus module.  Even after I reinstalled the module, it still didn't work, but when as soon as I added a share to the antivirus exceptions list (File Sharing > Exceptions), it became fully functional.

2) I set up a share in the Zentyal directory and gave a user full administrative rights I can browse and open files read only but I cannot make changes. If I create a brand new text document in that shared folder as that user then I can open the file and make change the first time but after that If I try to open the document again I get a Access is denied message.

Ugh.  Exact same symptoms here, except I'm using 2.2.  Any hope with this yet?

Opps, I seem to have spoken too soon!  I can now access the directory structure of the shares and see all files, but access it denied when I try to open them.  I can even create files, but then can't open them to edit them!!

Update:  as soon as I added a share to the antivirus exceptions list, it worked!  :o

Ok, I just migrated to Zentyal 2.2 from 2.0 and it seems to have fixed the issue.

Well, I did just find an interesting log entry.  Every time I try to access a share (in this case, 'Documents' share from \\accountingpc), I get this error in my /var/log/samba/accountingpc log:

Code: [Select]
[2011/12/02 10:23:19,  0] smbd/vfs.c:175(vfs_init_custom)
  Can't find a vfs module [vscan-clamav]
[2011/12/02 10:23:19,  0] smbd/vfs.c:322(smbd_vfs_init)
  smbd_vfs_init: vfs_init_custom failed for vscan-clamav
[2011/12/02 10:23:19,  0] smbd/service.c:846(make_connection_snum)
  vfs_init failed for service Documents

So it seems that the problem is with the Antivirus integration.  I tried disabling, enabling, uninstalling and reinstalling this module but without avail.  Any hope??  :'(

I accidentally crashed our Zentyal file server, bad enough that I decided to install Zentyal on a new machine and copy the files over.  I was happy that a configuration restore copied all of my settings over, including the users and file shares, and I get a share listing successfully on all clients, but the file shares are not accessible to any clients.  From windows, I get a message, "Share is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  The network path was not found."

When I try to access a share using smbclient, I get the error, "tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME"

I can't find any logs reports that seem to relate to the issue, but maybe I'm not looking at the write place. o_O  Any suggestions?

8
OK, I got everything... the settings are actually in the ebackup.bak folder, found in the files.tgz archive, which can be found in the confbackup.tar, which can be found at /var/lib/zentyal/extra-backup-data

9
Well, I finally figured out how to restore most of the original files with UFS Explorer.  I would still like access to my backup tho, so if anyone knows the location of the GPG key, I'd be really grateful if you'd share :)

10
Well, I successfully managed to crash the file system on my Zentyal company server  :'(  Furtunanly I have been using the backup feature to back it up every night to a remote rsync server, but those backup files are encrypted, and now I don't have the key.

I can use testdisk to find most of the files on the Zentyal hard disk, but the directory structure and file names cannot be restored.  I can search the contents of the files, but I'm not quite sure what to search for to find that specific file.  Does anyone know where that key is stored and what the file looks like so I can search for it?

Installation and Upgrades / Finally fixed!
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:46:09 pm »
WHOA!  It's fixed!  After prying, cracking, hacking, praying... I finally found that I was affected by this bug:  http://trac.ebox-platform.com/ticket/2095

I don't know why it says fixed, I have the latest packages and the same problem!  I fixed it by following lucero.diego's instructions on the bug discussion forum.

12
UPDATE:  I downgraded the ebox packages from my zentyal 2.0 install cd, but that didn't seem to fix the problem...  BUT I completely overlooked /var/log/ebox/error.log!

The results of "grep -i samba /var/log/ebox/error.log" will probaly be useful in solving the problem.  I posted the results in the pastebin below:

FYI I just went into /var/log/apt/history.log and found out exactly which packages were installed:

Quote
Upgrade: ebox-openvpn (2.0, 2.0), ebox-ca (2.0, 2.0), linux-headers-2.6.32-24 (2.6.32-24.41, 2.6.32-24.42), ebox-network (2.0, 2.0), ebox-dhcp (2.0, 2.0), udev (151-12, 151-12.1), ebox (2.0, 2.0), linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic-pae (2.6.32-24.39, 2.6.32-24.42), ifupdown (0.6.8ubuntu29, 0.6.8ubuntu29.1), wget (1.12-1.1ubuntu2, 1.12-1.1ubuntu2.1), libudev0 (151-12, 151-12.1), ebox-trafficshaping (2.0, 2.0), tzdata (2010k-0ubuntu0.10.04, 2010l-0ubuntu0.10.04), linux-headers-2.6.32-24-generic-pae (2.6.32-24.39, 2.6.32-24.42), libwww-perl (5.834-1, 5.834-1ubuntu0.1), ebox-usersandgroups (2.0, 2.0.1), ebox-samba (2.0, 2.0), mountall (2.15, 2.15.1)

Apparently the ebox-samba package is at fault here, cause even the users and groups service functions fine within Zentyal.  (why did it even try to upgrade ebox-samba from 2.0 to 2.0 ??)

Two days ago I installed and configured zentyal 2.0 as a fresh install.  It was working great for internet routing/filtering, and as a Windows Domain controller.

Today, I ran a simple upgrade by issuing "apt-get update  && apt-get dist-upgrade".

It found some new upgrades from the ebox ppa archive:

Code: [Select]
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/zentyal/2.0/ubuntu lucid main
I honestly didn't pay much attention to which packages where being upgraded, I just figured they were some nice security/bug fixes, so I installed them.

Well now, File Sharing WON'T START, and every time I try to restart it Zentyal says:

Quote
"Cannot connect to redis server at /usr/share/perl5/EBox/Config/Redis.pm line 523."

/var/log/ebox/ebox.log Has a whopping 10048 lines now, and it seems that almost every single one says:
Quote
HINT:  No function matches the given name and argument types. You might need to add explicit type casts.
2010/09/04 14:17:23 DEBUG> PgDBEngine.pm:311 EBox::PgDBEngine::query - Error querying data: SELECT rfc931 AS username, remotehost AS ip, domain_from_url(url) AS domain, event, code, SUM(bytes) AS bytes, COUNT(event) AS hits FROM squid_access WHERE (squid_access.timestamp >= '2009-11-1 00:00:00' AND squid_access.timestamp < date '2009-11-01 00:00:00' + interval '1 month') GROUP BY username, ip, domain, event, code ; , ERROR:  function domain_from_url(character varying) does not exist
LINE 1: SELECT rfc931 AS username, remotehost AS ip, domain_from_url...

There are no errors that I can find in /var/log/ebox/redis-server.log and I can still configure other parts of the Zentyal interface, so redis must be functioning as designed.

When I try to run "service ebox samba start" I get basically the same message as the web interface gives me.
