I got the same problem as you, VPN server rejecting client certificate on account that is a server and not a client certificate. It turns out that when you create the certificate for your client if you specify something in the alternative name( i specified email address, i don't know why ...) zentyal generate a server certificate. So stay away from the Subject Alternative Names field.
