Installation and Upgrades / eBox ftp module feedback
« on: July 24, 2010, 09:11:09 pm »
I have not seen much feedback on the ftp module yet, so here we go:
Ubuntu Server 10.04, eBox 1.5 - all updated as of a few minutes ago.
The ftp module is running vsftpd as far as I know. This should give us a very secure and fast ftp service on eBox.
The configuration options available are:
Anonymous access: Disable, Read only and Read/Write
Personal directories (Enable FTP access for each user to its /home directory)
So not too much to change here. In addition you can restart the ftp module from the dashboard.
Turning the ftp module on and enabling access to the personal directories does exactly this and everything works as advertised.
But one big problems arises from this configuration:
If you want to add any files to be displayed by the webserver, you need a way to upload them. The best way would be ftp, but as each user is locked into it's /home folder, this is not possible.
However, you find the configuration for vsftpd in /etc/vsftpd.conf, and here you could turn on a list, /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list. The users put in this list will not be confined to their /home folder and could then upload files to /var/www.
But as this list is overwritten when you do any changes that affects ftp in eBox, it is not very useful.
The best thing to do would be to be able to add a list of users in the ftp module interface of who should be allowed to go outside of their /home directory.
The security might be good, but ftp is not very useful if you are not able to upload the files you need.
Of course, I might have missed the point totally here and there is a setting for vsftpd that I am not aware of (and that do not get overwritten by eBox). If you know a way to achieve this, please let us know.

Installation and Upgrades / Problems preventing directory listings in Apache
« on: July 24, 2010, 04:34:16 pm »
Ubuntu Server 10.04 installed from CD and updated.
eBox 1.5 installed from ppa and updated
php and mySQL installed (as well as phpmyadmin)
Web server module enabled, but not virtual domains.
Added .htaccess with the commands mentioned in this thread:
http://forum.ebox-platform.com/index.php?topic=4366.0
Restarted the web server from the eBox web interface.
Still, the directory listings showed. Restarting the whole server did not help either.
