Installation and Upgrades / Re: Full backup takes a long time
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:33:03 pm »
I think you shouldn't spend more money until you have exhausted all the duplicity settings that allow you to tweak it.

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take to carry out an incremental backup once the full backup is done?

Where does it fail? When you try to join the machine to the domain?

Please make sure that all your zentyal packages are up-to-date.

Can you please paste the output of :

Code: [Select]
ls -ld /home/$USER_DIR

The issue in this posting is that Zentyal need to respond when its obvious that community can't like this issue with the passwords.

The actual issues are:

  • eBox doesn't connect to postgres using a user/password. The auth is based on the user connecting through a Unix socket. Or at least, that's how it worked in 1.4
  • The configuration is not stored in postgres. It is stored in redis. So a postgres password would be usless :)

It seems that the documentation is not clear enough. Please file a bug in trac.

Share path:
A path can be created either in the eBox directory /home/samba/shares or using an already existing directory path if File system path is chosen.

It should say:

If you pick File System Path you will need to create the directory manually if it doesn't exist and set the proper permissions in order to be accessed by your user. However, if you pick eBox, the share will be created automatically along with the right permissions under /home/samba/.

Help us make a better product by reporting this kind of stuff. If the doc it's not clear let us know.

As far as I know the 2.0 doc is not ready yet, but you can use the 1.4 doc which I suppose will be very similar:

I have jotted down 3 confirmed bugs I found in 2 Hours in another posting, and I have about 5 more to post, the point is there is Absolutely NO zentyal activity in support.

Report bugs in

And please, document in an accurate way the  steps that developers have to take to reproduce the issue. If it's easily reproducible and is actually a bug chances are that it will be fixed soon.

I'm certain that the development team is working hard to fix all the bugs that you guys report. I would kindly ask you to be patient and most of  all, to provide them with accurate bug reports.

Having said that, I think that  bringing interfaces down might be something that you don't expect if you are new to eBox.

I was thinking that maybe we could add an extra flag to /etc/init.d/ebox show a warning  when that happens. Especially if you are connected remotely.

We are already doing that from the UI when you change the configuration of an interface that could lock you out. I would be happy to also see a warning  in /etc/init.d/ebox  to avoid the issue you experienced.

Then we have a fundamental difference in philosophy:  ebox sits atop the kernel services, manages them, provides an administrative portal into them, but DOES NOT replace them.  I know of no other  OS that would permit such an approach.

I'm not really following. kernel services? what are you saying?

eBox does not only configure services, it also takes care of starting and stopping them. The idea is users do not need to know about the underlying services, eBox abstracts them. Quick example, if you configure a transparent proxy + dansguardian filtering, eBox will need to add iptables rules to enable the transparent proxy, configure squid and dansguardian and restart them.

I'm sorry If that's not the philosophy you were looking for, but believe it or not, makes things easier for a lot of users out there. We would like to make everybody happy, but we are perfectly aware that's not always possible.

Thanks anyway for asking and showing interest.

When you run /etc/init.d/ebox stop you are telling eBox to stop all the modules its managing. Network is one of them and that's why it will bring your interfaces down.

If you install ebox-samba and change the key login_shell to a valid shell in /etc/ebox/80samba.conf, the new users you create will have a valid shell and be able to log in.

It would help if you told us how you test it and in which way it stops working.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: cannot modified smb.conf HELP

You need to modify:

And restart samba with:

sudo /etc/init.d/ebox samba restart

Try tu use SCP instead.

Take a look at the doc here:

You will need to run "sudo ssh user@host" first to add accept the remote server fingerprint.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: How do I change eBox base URL?
« on: May 09, 2010, 12:48:34 am »
I don't understand why you need to change the base URL...

Anyway, you can change the apache stub template and your changes will survive restarts. It should be something like "apache2.conf.mas"
