Installation and Upgrades / [Solved...] Z. 3.5 Nightmare

Well after 4 days and 4 re-installs from scratch i have a couple of issues that i can't figure out.
The main issue is that 3.5 64bit is very unreliable. I installed DNS, Mail, Mailfilter, Users, (with samba...) Firewall, Webmail, Network...
The server is used as my SOHO with two ISP connections. After the configuration of both external interfaces with the proper address the Load balancing and wan failover are a mess.
The same GW and is used even if is down.... and there is no load-balance...
The (samba) Domain is crashing (maybe because is having two external GW ?)
After the crash the users and group disappeared !?!
After configuring the mail server and mailfilter they can't be started and unable to be restarted no matter what you try.
DNS is not able to function only with the two public IP's it requires the internal ip too... i've let it like this but it will provide the public ip when will be asked about the internet domain...
when DNS it is queryed about host.domain.com it presents only 1 ip! not both of them even if the ip are set in the DNS host section. And if the ip is down (one gw fails) the other can't be accessed (so the second ISP is useless) because is not provided when asked about hostname...
The firewall does not contain the services for Mail, Mail submission, SMTP, POP3 to be enable ... even if the modules are installed ?!?!
So overall the server is down and can't be used only for Mail and webserver. I did not want to install Open exchange and it seems that this is the result (4 time in a row of re-install's!!!)
Can someone tell me if you had any of this issues and how did you solve them?
Otherwise the only solution i see is to temporarlly install 3.2 or other....

Does anyone know how Private / Public certificates be generated for users ?
I need private key to work with outlook, to sign / encrypt emails and the Public certificate to be sent to other partners for PGP.
Can those certificates be generated from zentyal ? I've tried to use the current certificates but with those it doesn't work.

Installation and Upgrades / Power configuration for drives

Does anyone know if it is possible to spin down the HDD's or to shut them down after a period of time ?
The data partition is on a different drive than the system drive, so in theory it does not need to access it over night.
I want to put /dev/sdb (hardware raid 5) down after a 45 minute period of time.

Installation and Upgrades / [Solved] dissapointed by 3.0

After so much troubles with version 3.0 i reached the sad decision that this version of Zentyal is not good for me... Even if I'm not an easy quitter, it's almost impossible to make it work the way i want (also advertised).
After several fresh installs and two hardware servers changed there are issues that are stopping this to function properly. I want to share with you my personal opinion and this is not addresed to someone in particular. I do appreciate the hard work of the Zentyal team and respect their work. But maybe this 3.0 release is to "young" ad not ready to be released as stable.
First let me describe the enviroment in witch i used Zentyal:
Server desired pourposes: Home server with mail, webserver, DNS, Samba, Qos, Multiple gateways balance, and PXE with tools.
The first problem occured when i set the "domain hostname" (the label is not to clear, either ask for the SMB domain or hostname). You have to be very careful what you set up here or it can't be changed
Later on after the zentyal installed the modules, seting up the DNS did not create the zone "db.domain.com" ! (i discovered this after some errors on the dashboard).
For Mydomain.com i configured the machine_hostname and added the public IP i got from one of the providers. Also added this to the domain.
The problem is that when asked the Zentyal DNS is reporting the public IP but also the LAN ip (without this added to the hostname SAMBA is malfunctioning!!) and for the life in me i can't make dns not to report this (even after tweaking the bind files)...
Not even several changes to DNS did not create the db.mydomain.com file... (later problems occured from this)
Roundcube it seems to be unable to install properly unless you disable the module, change the mysql setting to use innodb. and then re-install the module... Failing to do so will get you with an error Database error on webmail page.
Binding Webmail to a virtual host seems useless! when i use webmail.mydomain.com i got nothing but the empty host folder....
No problem, I made a symlink from the /roundcube folder to webmail.mydomain.com... (maybe my understanding of virtual host and that of the option to bind the webmail to it is wrong...)
Another problem the Hardware raid is not recognised monitored correctly... System reports no HW raid installed (no problem as long as it works and i know that newer cards are reported as /dev/sdx instead of old cciss...)
In File sharing i checked the Antivirus on shares but this turned out to be a mistake since a the "scanned:bla_bla_file..." appeared in each folder and not deleted.. Why ?
Creating shares is problematic also... Even if i specify the path to the folder and not from smb. The share is created in /home/samba/shares ....
Then the problem of opening files from the server (not copy) but open MKV and executables larger than 2.3 Gb, Small files up to 2.2 G have been opened but larger ones not.
Even if the source filesystem for samba share was FAT32(usbstick) NTFS internal and usb hdd or EXT4 on raid. (on FAT32 i have my reasons to agree with not opening 4.7 image since those are Fat limitations).
After updating the Filesharing module the module apeared to stop working. It was activated in the Module status but did not work.
On other ocasion i removed the filesharing module and add it again but did not want to start...
And keep geting the errors of nsupdate not able to configure the zone.....
I 've seen the ticket on the track but no resolution was there.... even if this is a problem (not normal but high) that more users are facing
Serving PXE custom menu is not an easy task.
First you have to enable thincients, made the appropiate setting in the modules. build the image and then you have PXE. Then you have to see if you can add NFS support... because if you need to export some files you need to add nfs-kernel-server and other modules, configure exports and then try to boot but you also need to modify the firewall rules... see what to unblock and so on.
But it is a 50% success story. Currently my server is no longer able to provide nfs mounting from pxe.... (this i have to fix again) Maybe a preconfigured service in the zentyal list wold make life more easy....
So this are the problems encountered for now but i want to mention that this is on several fresh installs of either 32 and 64 bit and two different hardware setups.
The problem is that the little feedback that came from the forum was not enough to resolve the problems... I want to thank you all the members of this forum and this great community support. Since without your help this was bound to be more frustrating than it was.
After so many trials and failures i give up.... this post is not to blame someone but to share a state of facts that happened...

Installation and Upgrades / Samba large file problems

I'm having problems accessing files larger than 2Gb.
When accessing the file from network the files are listed but when I try to open i get the error "File does not exists" or in linux "Can't open smb://....".
The storage FS is EXT4 (so no limit regarding 2 or 4 Gb files)
The files are there and are ok. I've open them locally on the server's file manager. So the problem must be in SAMBA....
The Server 3.0.12
Samba module: 3.0.13
DNS:3.0.5
I don't know what can be causing this but it seems like a real problem.
Please let me know if there is something to do since i've spent two days researching for a solution but found none.

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to re-install my home server with the new 3.0 version. With this occasion I want to drop the raid card and use the ZFS instead to manage the storage.
I currently use 1 250G HDD for / and a hardware RAID 5 setup for 4 WD 2TB drives, but i want to take out the card and just use ZFS. Since ZFS is more effective against data loss. less equipment needed more efficient etc.
From the official ubuntu docs it seems there are two ways to use ZFS. one from fuse and one the kernel.
My question is if any of you had any experience with ZFS and zentyal.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Installation and Upgrades / Zentyal Wan failover faulty behavior

I have setup two gateways in my home server and i tested the situation of one of the links going down.
In wan failover i have setup two rules for each gateway.
Time 10 Seconds
dhcp-gw-eth1 Ping to host www.google.com 6 90 %
dhcp-gw-eth0 Ping to host www.google.com 6 90 %
The problem is that after using the second gateway the main gate-way is not enabled back up when the connection is working.
In short. Once a gateway is disabled because of network fault it is not used when the network comes online...
Each GW is set weight 1
Is there any solution or the setup i'm using is wrong?

I'm not shure how this will work out since my DNS is set up to use the ip provided by my current ISP.
And to make things complicated the second provider has a vdsl modem that only works if is set up with DMZ. So i'll be getting a class C ip address and only the modem will have the public ip.
Did someone set up a server with two internet lines ? or something close to what i've described ?

Installation and Upgrades / Zentyal PDC and Windows 7
« on: July 20, 2011, 01:57:02 am »I have tried to use the latest 2.0.4 stable Zentyal installer and I have encountered the following behavior from the server and also client.
Maybe someone can figure this out.
1 the Win7 is not yet fully supported to be joined into domain without the registry hack (right away after installation) and all the latest MS updates are required to be installed .
2 if the DNS domain is the same with the PDC domain an error occures and you can't join the domain.
3 when you create a group of users DO NOT create a folder for that group, otherwise an error with " The trust relationship .... " will apear when you try to login to the Win7 with the domain user.
4 After setting a home drive for the user (with or without the Roaming profiles enable) the user can't access that network drive "H:\ is not accessible. Network access is denied". If i access the server via Network -> Zentyal I can see all the shares and i can access the public ones.
5 if you create a share "profiles" windows will put profile files to that folder instead of the normal home folder.
If anyone is interested I can provide access to the machines Windows / Zentyal for debug purposes.
and also if you have some pointers regarding this issues please post them I'm sure that it will help a lot of people.

I have the following issue:
I have two domains
88.x.x.x - my.domain.ro
and
89.y.y.y - my.other-domain.ro
I want to keep them both in the same zentyal box and i only need to provide a webpage for them. I did not do this before so if there are some advices that you want to share please put them here.
I do not want to use two machines because my home is already full with computers
do just to add another domain to the current zentyal box seems appropiated in this case

Installation and Upgrades / Backup does not complete the task

Hi, I have the following problem on my eBox 1.4.9 machine
If i go to system, backup and i set to do "configuration" backup i see the backup beeng one.
If i select Full Backup i see the process start and when it gets to 18 out of 34 steps it freezes. specific at Mail system (maibe Mail filter...). Needles to say that i do not see anything conclusive in the logs. The system just remains at 18 steps out of 34.... The sum of all the data to be backed up is not greater than 1.5 Gb
I have read that others have encountered this issue but no cause is found to the problem.
Any help will be appreciated.

Installation and Upgrades / Ovpn problem on Linux but not on Windows

Hello eBox (new Zentyal) coleagues
I fave the following problem, I try to connect to my eBox server from a Kubuntu station.
After i have configured Network manager with the new connection,
I have imported the certificates, set all the parameters.
I hit connect and It works, The connection is active.
Step two.
After verifyng that i get the VPN IP i try to connect to ping the eBox server
but then i get disconnected.
I have read on the forum that others get the same behaviour after 1 -2 minutes
so i will check it out after atleast i get connected to the server.
Never the less i have tried to ping the server right after the vpn connection gets up
but then i get this:
PING 172.29.10.1 (172.29.10.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 172.29.10.2 icmp_seq=25 Destination Host Unreachable
From 172.29.10.2 icmp_seq=26 Destination Host Unreachable
From 172.29.10.2 icmp_seq=27 Destination Host Unreachable
Here is the routing table i get after the connection becomes active:

As the title says I'm encountering the following problems
From the local LAN i can see the domain/workgroup but i can't access it. (as the resource does not exists)
From vpn client, the workgroup/domain it is not found in microsoft windows networks.
If i type the \\ip_address\share in address bar, i can connect to the share and use the server. But via browsing no...
Any solutions to this ?
Is it possible that the server is not broadcasting the workgrup/domain in the network ??
I have tested on Linux Ubuntu 10 Vista and XP. all with the same results...

From the local LAN i can see the domain/workgroup but i can't access it. (as the resource does not exists)

Installation and Upgrades / BIg Problem, Where are the config-backup files!

I have a problem with my servers hdd,
It crashed last night and i have managed to mount it with the rescue console (6 hours to mount...). But with limited time available since it seems that the hdd is failing fast!
I need to copy the configuration-backup files that i have done in time, to be able to restore them to another machine
The problem is that i do not find the directory where they are located.
If anyoane can help please do not hesitate.
