Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal Documentation PDF
« on: November 12, 2010, 04:49:14 pm »
Hi Jesta & Warren,

Thank you for your messages! As already mentioned in this topic, we've opted not making the documentation available in pdf-format because the documentation is constantly updated and the pdf-format would be either most of the time outdated or we should should spend plenty of time creating new pdf-versions.

Hi arun & ViTality!

Could you please specify why the html-version is not enough or how you would improve it? As we're updating the documentation continuously, we've opted not creating the pdf-version as it would either be most of the time outdated or we should spend plenty of time creating new pdf-versions.

Hi Acon! Thanks for reporting - we'll fix this ASAP!

Cheers, Heidi

Hello everybody,

We're happy to announce that the official documentation for Zentyal 2.0 is now available at! As usual, it is available in both English and Spanish. We apologize for the delay in publishing due to the simple fact that reviewing and updating the whole documentation has been a lengthy process. We're still working on updating the (almost 500) screenshots in the English version, but this should be done by the end of this week.

If you find any issues (typos, mistakes, etc.) and want to contribute by reporting them, please let us know in this thread so we can fix them.

Thank you! Best regards,

Zentyal Team

News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal server Release Policy published!
« on: September 19, 2010, 11:16:05 am »
Hi Michael,

Thank you for your feedback! We most certainly agree that longer support period would be recommendable and we hope that in the near future we are able to extend our support period. Please note that this Release Policy is not carved in stone in the sense that when ever we can improve the conditions we offer for our users and customers, we will do so. We opted being rather conservative with our first Release Policy, promising only what is possible with current resources (maintaining simultaneously three stable Zentyal versions).

News and Announcements / The new name for eBox Platform is Zentyal!
« on: August 19, 2010, 12:17:00 pm »
As Ignacio and Roxane already tipped you off in their previous posts, eBox Platform changes name and yes, now the new name is official! From the 1st of September eBox Platform will be Zentyal! We hope you like how it sounds :)!

If you read Ignacio's post, you already know that the most important reason for changing the name of eBox Platform was that it does not correspond with what the product is and what we do. Simply put: "eBox Platform" or "eBox" suggest that the software comes in a box (server hardware, appliance...) and this is definitely not the case. eBox Platform is purely server software that comes with a cloud-based subscription services.

As Roxane described in her post, choosing the new name for eBox Platform was quite a lengthy process. Once the eBox Team rolled up their sleeves and started the search armed with a tough requirement list, we came up with over 1.000 names. Of this list, first 85, then three and eventually one name, Zentyal, was selected. So, why this name?

Well, to start with, we believe that the name Zentyal reflects better the product itself. The main aim of eBox Platform has always been and is, to make something as essential as network management easy and secure. At least to the eBox Team the word "Zentyal" transmits the qualities of Zen, such as intuition, insight, balance and coolness together with the qualities of Essential, such as easy, basic, fundamental and necessary. All pretty matching qualities for what we aim to do, I would say.

And on a side note, regarding the more practical side of the new name, we believe that Zentyal is easy to remember, easy to pronounce and short. Moreover, the word is pronounced similarly both in English and Spanish, that is a great plus ;)!

So, how many repeats does it take to get used to the new name? Well, some, but as I and the whole eBox Team believe that this was the correct decision, we feel proud and excited to start this new chapter in our story! In addition, we have pre-announced the new name already to partners and some community members and so far, we have only encountered positive comments regarding the change which is truly encouraging.

So, what do you think about it? Feel free to leave any comments to this post :)!

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Where do you run eBox on ?

We've now updated and added a more specific description of the eBox Platform Hardware Requirements to the Wiki. We hope you'll find it useful - keep posting the hardware you use for your installation!

As J. Salamero announced yesterday via we have now improved the eBox service integration and ebox-jabber module. You have the full post here: and a short summary goes here:

As you already probably know, the Services section of eBox Platform tells which TCP/UDP ports are being used. This information is used by the Firewall and Traffic Shaping modules to create rules that are automatically updated if there are any changes in the port configuration. The latest novelty regarding this section is that ebox-webserver and ebox-jabber now also register themselves on Services.

Furthermore, Web Server module now supports SSL, allowing you to define multiple SSL Virtual Hosts using only one IP address and to deploy all your websites with SSL just by making a couple of clicks. And we also made the Webmail module to be able to automatically deploy the webmail over one of these virtual hosts.

Although not related with the Services, we also want you to know that we have now rewritten the ebox-jabber module by using the new MVC framework and we have moved away from the old CGI and templates system. The new Jabber server we chose is ejabberd, firstly because it is already included in Ubuntu and secondly because it gives us the choice to extend the module with new features and to further integrate it with eBox Users and Groups.

All these improvements are available on eBox 1.5 beta. As always, we would really appreciate if you could help us testing these new features: you will find instructions on how to install eBox 1.5 in the Installation Guide and we would be pleased to hear your feedback via the Beta Testing forum.
