Installation and Upgrades / some logg-on log off issues on z 3.1
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:19:24 pm »after small tests im noticing a few minor things and 1 major issue:
lets start with the small things:
the second time im starting up my server i get promted to a terminal logon ....
witch by the way should be the way zentyal will handle monitorless-servers. the only issue i see for non-techi users, is that there is no indication for them on how to get into the grafical user interface... so a message saying: " you can login with your username + password here, than type startx at the following promt to start the grafical interface "
if this booting to the cli was unitended behaviour for some strange reason i would still hope that this 'bug' will not be fixed and the above started tip would still be added as a 'patch'
but there is a more pressing matter:
when in the gui: you het the start menu and go to 'log off' the grafical sessing is nicely terminated BUT your not logged of from the system, instead i was still logged on as: admuser@zen31.domain.lan on tty1 obviously this should NOT be, and many people with either no know how to, or forget to logg of completely and access to the server's configuration may be at risk

i can not say it to many times, files that are managed by zentyal do NOT live in /etc
google = "zentyal stubs" or "zentyal template" and you will find your answer.

in 1 word you!...
long answer, you probably used a faulty disk to start with, or your cd burner is to blame,
this kind of behaviour happens with me if im using 1 certain type of cheap (or old) disks
or a faulty cd-burnder... try a diferent type of disk check if your optical drive is properly supporting the type of media (for example some drives dont support dvd-RW or DVD+R - and try again.
if all else fails use a usb pendrive.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: DD-WRT Router behind Zentyal.. Firewall Configurations...
« on: March 30, 2013, 03:50:08 pm »
there is 1 setting that i have my doubts about...
you said that in your firewall rules you made 2 listings...
1: from wan to zentyal udp port abc
and
2: from wan to lan udp port abc
my doubts is that rule 1 is false and only rule 2 should be applied... because with natting you can not AND hosts a services on the local machine AND capture data and forward it... at least not at the same interface.

i agree with chris ... BUT, please let me say this once, its NOT a good idea to come here for help, spend our time and than refuse to do what we tell you to do, unless it is not possible (which is allmost never the case)...
so again, do what i said in the last post... because it will give us valued information about where the problem is most likely to be expected.. its not intended for keeps, but is the (easiest) way to determin where the problem is)...

rather thaqn using everest ... please run a ubuntu live cd to see if you A >> can connect to the (inter)network ... if you cant.... than connect a usb pendrive and once it is mounted copy-paste the opput of lshw (or lspci) or both, to the usb drive and from your desktop upload it to pastebin and share it with this forum... once we know more we might be able to help.

just for reference... you say that it worked be before but it sudenly no longer worked...
what did you change, did you recently change your zentyal firewall - did you previously had to configure any rulles in hte FW to make it work and if so are these rules still there...
does it work if you put your ddwrt thingy on your wan port (temporarely exluding zentyal from the equasion.. there are so many things unanswer that we cant even really begin to help you...

half_life agreed, i wasn't criticzing but i wanted to add to the information to help understand more about it...
the only small crictic i gave was... that after you did the 2 ipbased you took a host on a diferent network...
first ping an ip by google than a dns by yahoo instead of also google...
the rest i absolutely agree, im also intrested about the / switch / wifi app / router device thingy...

what i dont like about this is the folling..
you are plinging 1 local router (zentyal in this case) by IP...
than you are pinging google public dns server ... but than you are pinging not google but yahoo...
where from my standpoint you would have pinged google.com
anyway, 43ms too google.com is a bit hight but absolutely within any normal limitations... this leads me to beleave that the 500ms ping time is releated to dns resoltuion and not to network routing
that said, you should find out why this is... a first logical step for me would be to check how fast zentyal local terminal will be at pinging 8.8.8.8 and than yahoo.com
