Other modules / Where is CUPS/Printer in 5.0
« on: May 26, 2017, 09:21:15 pm »
I was going to upgrade one of my lab boxes from 4.2 to 5.0 but noticed the CUPS/Printer module is gone. Did it move and I just can't find it or was it removed?

If it's removed, what about previous printers that were only served by Zentyal? Can I reload the module into 5.0? How?

If removed, is it coming back? If not, alternatives?

Seems odd that no-one else would need/want to do this especially in a "closed" network.

I'm guessing there are no ideas on how to do this?

Other modules / Disable Root DNS lookups

I have Zentyal 4.2 and 5.0 setup in our lab and we are working on our network security. One thing we noticed is that Zentyal continually tries to contact the root DNS servers for some reason. Is there a way to disable this behavior and if so how.

The best I could find was instructions stating that if you define a forwarder, then Zentyal would use that and ignore the root DNS servers. I tried that but it didn't stop the traffic.

Any ideas/thoughts? No it's not really a big deal but it's just unnecessary noise on the network.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Syslog Client

Okay thanks. So just to be sure, I'd probable need to edit the rsyslog.d/<something>.conf file (sorry about the <something> but not at the machine right now to look in the directory)?

Then I'm guessing there will be an entry for syslog files going to a local directory somewhere. Just change that to point to the server by IP address or do I need to create a mount point (thinking IP address).

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Register Offline Community Server
« on: February 03, 2015, 01:09:21 am »
Appreciate the input. I actually did look for a scripting solution but couldn't find one; information on how to initiate the backup from script was scarce and I couldn't even find the backup that I created from the web interface on the drive to manually copy it to my backup location. I ended up needing to do the backup, export it to the local machine, then copy to my backup location. That's way more manual work than I believe should be necessary.

Any advice/pointers/links you could provide to help get this scripted would be appreciated.

Installation and Upgrades / Register Offline Community Server
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:00:16 pm »
I have a couple of servers running Community v3.5. They are all off the internet and running in our lab. I wanted to be able to setup the backup to go to our NAS but that apparently is not available unless you register - only local backup is possible.

So to prevent the extra 3 steps of copying the backup local and then moving it to our NAS, I tried to register only to find I can't.

So how do I go about getting this done? The biggest issue is I want the backups to go to our offline storage and that isn't an option. If the only way to do that is by registering, how to I go about registering a server that will never be connected to the internet?

Thanks!!!

Installation and Upgrades / Syslog Client

I know there is a syslog built into Zentyal.

I also searched and saw the posts requesting various syslog changes.

What I am unable to find is how would I point my Zentyal box to output all of it's logs to my existing syslog server?

We are in a lab environment so no danger of things getting out and we have a central management server which handles lots of tasks. One of which is syslog. We've managed to get most things pointed there as the routers/switches and such are simple to configure. Issue is, I can't find where in Z to tell it not to keep the syslog files local but dump everything to the server.

Guessing it's in one of the .conf files but couldn't figure which one and didn't want to break it in the process of trying to move things around.

Thanks!!!

Installation and Upgrades / Re: NTP Server Config in Lab Environment

Just to close the loop on this in case someone else searches:

Ended up creating an upstream NTP source for this box to point to and that seemed to solve it. Too bad I had to resort to that but, it's working.

Appreciate the reply. I already know how to fudge the stratum. Issue is that after I set it to 10 in ntp.conf and restart the server, it goes back to 13.

Also, since this is a lab environment with no outside connection, will not be able to do the apt get (guessing I don't really need to though).

So the only thing left is the removal of ntpdate? Isn't that needed?

Thanks!!!

Okay so I verified this and I'm pretty sure I know why, what I don't know is how to stop it.

I edited the ntp.conf file to fudge the stratum to 10. Verified by catting the file. Stopped and started npt service and it appeared to still be 10 although ntpq was still showing 13.

Rebooted the server (vm) and catted the ntp.conf and stratum was back to 13. So something is resetting it and from my research, I found this happens because it can't find an external server to sync to so it sets itself to a higher stratum.

First: is that correct?

Second: How do I stop it? This is a lab environment with no outside connection and we need the zentyal server to be the authoritative source so we want to force it to stratum of 10. How do we do that?

Installation and Upgrades / NTP Server Config in Lab Environment

I'm having an issue with the NTP configuration. First, it's my network guy that reported it so I did not see it first hand but I do trust him.

NTP is setup and running and appears to be serving time just fine down to the esxi's and vms running. Tried to install a cisco call manager and for some reason it refused to install. The research revealed that the NTP stratum was too high and installation would not continue.

As I said, this is a lab environment so there is no outside internet NTP pools that I can find so is there a way to force the stratum on the Zentyal NTP server to some number < 10 without it finding an outside source?

Thanks!!!
