This is a buggy mess. 5th time installing and same thing. No internet, dns is broken, will not set up a gateway, very unfortunate. Might go back to 4.2 because I'm honestly not sure how this was production ready. Doesn't seem as though they tested it at all. Samba errors with the dns errors, but the big thing is no internet.

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Enter that and you will get internet back, still massive dns errors and no gateway showing up but at least its usable.  Samba is STILL broken, doesn't see acl on any mounts even when acl is enabled on them.  You will need to enter that network restart command on every reboot.  First time I booted it booted to command line so I had to edit the grub bootloader to get it to boot to the gui.  I can fix stuff like that but man alive, how could you recommend it when 4.2 was broken, 5 broke it more.  Im sure they will fix it but after waiting a year for 4.2 to work I am not holding my breath.

Any folder I try to share gives me this as well:

The mount point '/mnt/share' must be mounted with 'acl' option. This is required for permissions to work properly.

Fstab is correct, mtab doesnt pull in correct info though, so basically its unusable untill mtab pulls in the acl from fstab.

Many, many bugs. Unuseble version developed for 2 days. Please fix all bugs, else this version is very buggy!

There is a new ISO with several fixes, please check with md5sum if you are using the newest one if you try again (http://download.zentyal.com/zentyal-5.0-development-amd64.iso.md5).

There should not be any need of restart networking manually... anywyay, it's difficult to fix the problem without a clear way to reproduce it, I don't have any "internet down" behavior in any of my tests installations, so any additional detailed information may help a lot. Thanks in advance.

Its a problem.  I have 3 nics, 2 internal and 1 external/wan.  I set wan dhcp, and lan on there various subnets and when I save I lose all internet for good.  Only way to fix is restarting networking services, after every reboot.  Other than that, it is stable enough, Samba throwing fits but thats normal.  I noticed they updated the network services but problem is still present after reboot.  Its throwing dns resolution errors if that helps.  I can replicate when I get home and take some screen shots of the config I have and the dns error the browser throws.  Its just not resolving anything.  This happens before any DNS settings have been changed, ie. stock.  So in summary, are you replicating the issue on a clean install or did you try and actually set up and use the server functionality? It works on install, just breaks when we save network settings.  I might try the new file later, if I can restore settings from the og 5.0 build.

Edit: Something got fixed!!!! I now see the proper gateway under network.  Before, nothing was populating the interface section.  Thats exciting.

So, you confirm that your issue is gone after upgrading to zentyal-network 5.0.1 or do you still have any other problem with the network?

It started working, I rebooted and it works.  Ive uploaded the other 2 errors I get as well, and fstab is correct, it must be a backend thing, or I need to use ext4, but NTFS *SHOULD* work? Also, it errors when saving at random...sometimes it works but I do get a lot of mail and dns saving errors.

Edit : oops I almost forgot. No gui when you boot. It's a grub issue I believe and if I edit it, update grub and startx it normally brings up the gui. It isn't at the moment :p but I'm working on it. I'll update when I find the cause.

Edit 2: rebooted and not only no gui but startx does not work. Also a ton of dns errors and no internet to wired machines, though wireless works after about 5 minutes. Bummer

I had the same networking issues you had with the initial install.  I grabbed the updated ISOs and reinstalled.  When I rebooted I too still had the problem in networking.  I shutdown and performed a cold start to get things working  *shrug*.   Now I no longer have gateway and routing issues.

Your second issue is probably not what you think.  When I bring up mine (vm running on Proxmox and using Spice remote display protocol)  it presents a cli login from a virtual terminal.   If I send an ctl-alt-F7 key combination it switches to the already running lxde environment.  I actually prefer not to have a gui running so if this ever actually makes it to production for me,  it will be with the headless option.

The samba error is being generated by your mounted drive (/dev/sdb1).  You need to alter the mount options in /etc/fstab to include an acl option and remount the drive before you will be able to share it via samba.  Note the drive may be referenced by its UUID which can be found with blkid.

Yes, as I said, fstab is good, which is what makes it weird. I ended up editing smb.conf and adding it manually which worked of course but doesn't survive a reboot. I'll fix that later. Would be nice if file sharing natively supported Samba beyond the walled garden. Fstab is all good, mtab doesn't show acl which is super weird but it should pull from fstab and its not. I'll figure it out. The network /dns issue is the main thing.

Sorry,  I missed the fstab comment.   What happens if you perform a remount manually before trying to add the share?

Nevermind,  I have replicated your problem.

Confirmed that additional mounted drives are rejected by zentyal with an explanation to add acl to the mount options.  The option is applied to the mount and confirmed with tune2fs and tested as functioning by applying acls to a test directory.

Adding to that,  I tried to configure a share with the "Directory under Zentyal" option.  It claims to successfully create it and advertises it as available but there is no /home/samba directory.  In my case it is not possible to test further because the samba domain does not seem to be fully initialized.

Weird! I've had the Samba issues since 4.2 but was always able to do them via command line. I can now as well but zentyal overwrites shares on reboot unfortunately.

The acl problem should be fixed with zentyal-samba 5.0.1, please upgrade and confirm. Thanks.

I would literally love if this fixed it. I installed nautilus tools, Samba system tools and tried to edit the smb.conf and global variables wouldn't stock through a reboot. I don't really care if  zentyal supports Samba but as long as it's not blocking custom globals I'm good as gold :) thanks for all your work guys.

The updated packages seems to have cured the issues up.  I did have to un install then re-install the samba module to get it working.

What did you do exactly? I couldn't get it to work.  I edited fstab and made sure acl was enabled, remounted, rebooted, etc and its still not liking the drive.  Weird thing is that mtab doesn't show it mounted acl but fstab is telling it to, so don't know what is being lost between them.
Title: Re: Zentyal 5 ERROR

It was pretty straightforward.
I first updated to the 5.01 packages via the web interface.
I then attempted to create a share  via "Directory Under Zentyal"  and found it still to be broken.
I removed the "Doman Controller and File Sharing" module under Zentyal Components  ---> Delete
It added a few other modules that were dependent on that module.
I reinstalled the deleted modules.
I enabled "Domain Controller and File Sharing" under modules.
Once that was complete I added a user and tested the various permutations for shares.

I did a full wipe and reinstall and now it reboots consistently all the time, networking works on reboot and samba works.  My only issue now is mysql is now not letting me login :D

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

I started in safe mode, and reset the password, but it still doesnt let me login to a mysql terminal.  I tried pulling the default zentyal pass and thats a no go as well.  I dont want to do a purge, as zentyal has a database i would lose and screw up the system.  I can connect to the database on a reboot, but no password works.

Edit: yep turns out purging mysql wasnt great but its fixed now.

"root" and "zarafa" are defaults for ebox, "zentyal" and "password_from_file" are mysql logins, though zentyal doesnt have permission to create databases.  I cannot for the life of me figure out the pass for "root"

try :

BTW if you have started in safe mode ie with --skip-grant-tables switch, you are already in a position to create your user and give them rights to *.*.

The root user does not have a password assigned for @localhost.
You can check this with this sql statement
Code: [Select]
select * from mysql.user where User like 'root%';Change the statement from root to zentyal for contrast.

skip grant tables prevents you from creating/deleting users though, And the only way I can login is through safe mode with that variable.  Im trying to figure out a way to recreate root user through safe mode.  I see the password hash, I can change it and visually check and see that it has been changed, but I still cannot login as root.  Never run into that issue on 16.04 before :D

Did you sudo su or did you mysql -u root   ?

I actually just fixed it, logged in as debian-sys-maint using the pass from the debian.cnf file and set up a new root user with full priv :D :profit: I appreciate the help! Ive literally been all over the forums, I just happened on the maint account going through some config files.

No worries.  It gave me something to break up writing maintenance plans for our F5's.  Change management can be so tedious at times  ;D

Hi Guys, just found this a few days ago and it appears to be what I have been looking for.

I seem to be having the same (or similar) issues as was reported at the start - specifically, booting the server is very hit and miss. The console frequently hanges at the line /dev/sda1: clean, xxx/xxx files, yyy/yyyy blocks.  Sometimes when it does this I can access it via the web interface, other times it is non responsive.  The DHCP is similary hit and miss.

It is installed as a VirtualBox machine.  I cloned the installation immediately before the initial post install reboot so I could mess about with intial config tests without having to do a full install.  Each and every time I have tried to pick up with a fresh clone it has booted up cleanly and perfectly - it is ONLY on post install reboots.  I have also been getting various error messages on settings changes, which I assumed was because of partial configs, but I am not so sure now.

The download I used to install was from 9/12/2016 so after 5.0.1 was uploaded I believe.

Am I better going back to an older version to test becasue as things stand this is a complete non-starter - often quite literally

Wow, how buggy is Zentyal!  I read some other comment that you guys have it wrong regarding the stability issue and I must say I agree.

I have just tried version 4.2 and that is barely better than 5.0.  Frankly, I do not want to play with something this frustrating.  I will keep looking because this is just too annoying.

While I am giving some (hopefully) constructive feedback, the constant removal of functionality I have seen in my research from one version to the next is counter to what every other software supplier is seeking to achieve.  That on its own would be enough to make me look elsewhere as I would be worried that some functionaily I wanted was next to be withdrawn - even without the issue of 'will it start today'.

Sorry, I know you warn that this s/w is development stuff, but it barely qualifies as alpha let alone beta.

Why would any sys admin test this stuff then go get the paid for Server edition to install it?  Talk about putting your neck in a noose!

Real shame, because I so wanted this to be workable but it just is not.  I guess I am another lost prospect.  Unfortunately, whenever it comes up I will also be warning people not to try it so probably more lost prospects.

I MIGHT try again in a couple of years if the functionality is restored and I do not find an alternative (of which there appear to be a growing number of late and one or two in particular which seem to be acting as a magnet for unhappy Zentyal users past and prospective) in which case why would I bother?  I SO wanted this to work.  Good luck with it.  I really hope you get it together.

Nethserver is great. Yes, zentyal still reboots to nothing every once in a while and errors a lot but I think it does save , configs just never save without error. Happens almost all the time but I haven't had it not save I just keep trying . It's a good way to learn more Ubuntu , having to fix issues like that . Don't know how this is marketed to small businesses though as it is a tech demo at best . DHCP might be the latest Windows cumulative update, Microsoft can't make stable software either apparently and it's paid . The recent KB they just pulled ,uninstall and you'll have internet Woking properly again . I've had a ton of issues but DHCP should be one of the few things that works .

I think your comparison with Microsoft is apt here.  I know an increasing number of users and sysadmins looking for MS alternatives precisely because of that sort of experience.  One friend recently said he was looking at moving to Apple next time because Windows 10 is such a pain and I have lost count of the number who are looking to move to Linux now.  Even my 85 year old mother is asking me to move her onto some alternative because Win10 is causing her so much grief, and she never wants to change ANYTHING.  She has also said all her friends with computers are complaining endlessly about Win10.

After that sort of experience, no IT professional is going to go with something as buggy as this.

I have just installed Nethserver as a trial and it has been smooth as silk in exactly the same test environment (except when I forgot to set the network to Virtual Host instead of internal, but that is hardly their fault.  Shut down, reset the NIC and reboot.  Up perfectly!)  The contrast with Zentyal could not be greater than that with either version 5.0 or 4.2.  I tried 4.2 in the hope that it would be more stable as I assumed that the paid for version would be similar to that.  Either the two bear no resemblence at all, in which case there must be two entirely different development teams which I think is extremely unlikely and even less desirable, or that the paid version is in any practical sense no better.

I really wanted Zentyal to work. I still do.  I liked the way it appears, both on paper and on the screen, but the decisions the management are taking are just wrong IMO and will drive the project into the ground.  One can only hope that a group of developers will leave and fork it in the same way as happened with the birth of Libre Office and more recently Nextcloud.

Welp my sources.list just gone...etc/apt was just gone on a reboot :D I was wondering why updates were not happening, I manually updated and bam, no sources. So I recreated all sources and noticed a new network module, we shall see how that goes.  Lost network of course, tried restarting and still no network.  So I reboot the servers and low and behold! No gui, no cli, no nothing.  I have network so something is working but I cannot remote in and when I hook up a monitor, it has no display.  So weird.  Im going to reboot again, hard, to see what happens.

Just an update, server seems to be pretty stable. Whatever system updates to the modules seems to have worked well.  Still boots to nothing on occasion, but once booted im running on 10 days uptime.  Ubuntu 16 is pretty cool, its a nice upgrade.

So every reboot sees my sources.list deleted, actually my entire etc/apt folder is gone.  Every reboot, its really weird.
