Hello,

I am currently running Zentyal server 2.0 looking for the best way to maintain availability in the event of hardware failure. Currently I am running 3 drives with mdadm RAID 5 with LVM on top for / & /home partitions.

I have made many tweaks over the years, and unfortunately some of them were done in a pinch and not documented properly. Is there any easy way to migrate these tweaks to a new install on a new system? If not, is it possible to migrate the server to a virtual instance (hosted on kvm,xen, or xenserver) on a new system using LVM snapshots or otherwise? I would like to have a virtual setup of Zentyal where I can take full snapshots while live that could be migrated to a new VM Host OS on a new system in a pinch (hardware failure) without major downtime and configuration.

I fully intend to upgrade to 2.2 after this is addressed. What do you think?

I may be wrong here and please feel free to let me know:

The Win7 machine is likely using the NETBIOS name to reach the server. I believe editing and adding the line "search mydom.local" to the top of /etc/resolv.conf on the Ubuntu 11.10 machine may solve this issue.

Is this how to outdated?

I tested this on my 2.0 test server using manual duplicity in a terminal, and it did not work. After the process completes, the server reboots, I get to the Zentyal logo, then I get a "Failed to execute login command" after attempting login. Does this method of recovery not work when using LVM? (for / and /home). I do mount the LVM Volumes correctly before restoring as well.

Hi Phil,

I have a Zentyal 2.2 test setup and tried using the recommended software to export from my running 2.0 server. I edited the LDIF file and changed the dn info to the new test server's dn info. For the most part the user info/groups/permissions imported correctly, however I am confused about the SID part. You said you went in to edit the SID number to make it match the old domain. When I look at my test 2.2 sambaSID info it already matches the original sambaSID, do I need to change anything else? I can't test logging on to the domain with current users at the moment because I still have the production server in use on the network.

Did you use RAID for the swap partition?

I assume you're asking me?

If so, then the answer is no. I didn't use swap in RAID, I created a 2GB swap partition at the end of each disk individually. These were also the first partitions I created since I went backwards (in order to leave some space at the beginning of the disk.)

In my experience with using RAID 5, I used this workaround to get it to work. With Zentyal 2.0, I was unable to get a system to boot after doing a full install using RAID1 for /boot and RAID5 for everything else (excluding swap).

When you get to the manual partitioning phase of the install, take this advice:

When creating your partitions, start at the end of each disk and go backwards (ie. root partitions, swap and then /boot last in your case) making sure you start each partition towards the end of the disk. The difference here is that you MUST leave some unpartitioned space at the beginning of each disk (at the same exact place), so once you get to creating the /boot partitions for RAID1 you'll have to calculate the remaining space on the disk and SUBTRACT a few MBs. Also, I made a partition on all 3 disks for /boot running them in RAID1 with 2 active partitions and 1 spare partition, this way, all partitions are identical on each disk.

Thanks so much for the reply. The issue has been solved by a simple (nervous) reboot. Sorry to have wasted anyone's time. You see i had several users connected so I had to wait for after-hours.

I didn't know about that command to check the status of the modules, that was helpful. I did try to restart the apache module and it would hang in the terminal but its all back now.

Running Zentyal 2.0.16 (as of 3/11/11)

I came in Monday and I have no access to the Zentyal through the https web interface. I can only access the machine through a remote terminal. I have the server scheduled to automatically update at 20:39, could an automatic update Sat or Sun night have caused the apache module to crash?

I've tried restarting the apache module manually and checked /var/log/ebox/ebox.log and error.log to no avail. The server is used for file sharing and authenticating (these services are also still working) and I have 50+ users connecting to the shared drives.

Thanks for the response. After much blood, sweat and tears (about 25 installs), I have resolved the issue with one simple method.  I doubt this solves the issue, but it works around some kind of glitch or bug. 

I installed all the partitions (RAID1 and 5) at the end of each disk with about 50mb of free space at the beginning of the disk and now everything boots fine.

At the end of each disk(3) is a 2GB swap partition, then a 497.9GB partition for RAID5, and a 200Mb ext2 /boot partition in RAID1 (2 drives + 1 spare)

The RAID5 partition contains LVM with volumes for / and /home for storage.  Boots perfectly fine now.

I have built a new server (using Zentyal 2.0) to replace our Domain authenticating and primary file server.

The intent was to have a 3 disk (500g) setup with a RAID 5 partition for storage (/home)

It seems I've tried installing with every possible configuration (besides installing on 1 disk only) with the same outcome: "Gave up waiting for root device" "dev/mapper/****-ROOT does not exist. Dropping to a shell"

I am placing /boot on its own RAID1 partition at the beginning of the disks using ext3, I have tried including / in the RAID1 partition with /boot and tried including it with /home in the RAID5 partition with lvm.  Every setup I have tried has ended up with this same outcome. The grub bootloader is being installed on ALL disks, and all /boot partitions are being flagged as bootable.

What am I doing wrong? I tested having /boot and / on RAID1 with no problems on another machine. Should I just give up and put the OS and /boot on a SINGLE drive and /home on RAID5?

I guess I've been overlooking the simplest option all along.  We have about 40-50 users. 

I was worried I'd have to migrate everyone's account profiles and files over in one night (not possible with 40-50) I realize now I can just have 2 different domains up and slowly copy over profiles and transition them into the new domain a few at a time.

So if you were to remove the Windows server from the network and remove the settings in the Zentyal specifying it as a slave and enable PDC under File Sharing, would it not take over as the authenticating DC on the network for all users?

Since Zentyal supports AD sync with Windows 2003 Server but not NT4, I had this idea to replace the old (NT4) PDC:

Use Active Directory Migration Tool (v3.0) to fully migrate the domain (users/groups/security) to a (temporary) Windows 2k3 Server fresh install.  Then set up a Zentyal special install networked together with the 2003 server.  Follow the Zentyal_adSync.exe guide to sync the users to the Zentyal.

My question is:  Does anyone with experience with Windows 2003 onward know how the licensing works? Will I be able to migrate users to Win2k3 temporarily without buying CALs (the users will not be connecting)

Thanks for the responses.

Everything I have seen tells me that setting up Zentyal as the backup domain controller is not possible and thus syncing credentials will not work.  I am hard researching the process, it may be possible with other Ubuntu (samba) distros but doesn't seem possible with this one.  My main concern is preserving account data on each computer locally without having to move all settings over to a new XP accounts (same domain name, new domain)

Hello,

If I replace a Windows NT4 PDC with a Zentyal 2.0 PDC (same domain name and all users added w/same credentials) will the Windows XP clients see this as a new domain and create new user accounts for them? Or will it authenticate the same as before, preserve the user account from the old NT4 domain thus keeping all settings and desktop configurations(locally)?
