Installation and Upgrades / Re: Add-On: BackupPC request.
« on: January 15, 2010, 10:56:05 am »
I've been working with it on my eBox machine for about three weeks now and nothing's been breaking. eBox and BackupPC work in tandem.
This is really good news.  From previous conversations I know how long you have been looking to find a suitable backup system.

Would you be willing to provide a bit more information about your setup and the way in which you use BackupPC? (Perhaps even a quick 'n' dirty diagram of your rigs.)

Unfortunately, during the last few months, I have not been able to test any of the recent eBox developments. Have you compared the forthcoming (v 1.4) inbuilt eBox backup system with BackupPC?  If yes it would be great if you could be the first to provide some feedback on the feature sets. If no what are the particular BackupPC features you favour?

Make sure to turn off the Backup module in eBox as well because it can use up inodes and is doing the job BackupPC can do.
I may have missed the point here, are you meaning that BackupPc can be used as a complete replacement for the eBox backup systems? (data, configuration files, and system files)

Did your tests cover restores?  This is an area which has given rise to requests in the forum for assistance when the eBox restore does not work as expected. I am vary of setting up eBox version 'X' and upgrading to version 'Y' by restoring backups made on 'X' to a newly created machine based on version 'Y'.

While they work great side-by-side, some sort of native, out-of-the-box, support would be nice... ... maybe have the "Backup" area of the sidebar actually point to a working BackupPC install,
This seems to be an excellent idea.

I can't wait for eBox 1.4's release because it will allow me to run Ext4 without any headache and have BackupPC, and in effect eBox, be more efficient because of it.
Again my ignorance is on display, how does ext4 improve the efficiency of eBox?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: No Karmic Support?
« on: December 24, 2009, 10:29:59 am »
I think there is a difference, if I'm reading your suggestion correctly. The idea would be for eBox to offer an eBox-specific version of the stock Ubuntu Minimal CD that would allow installation of eBox across the network.
OK the difference is clearer now.  It is such a long time ago since I experimented with the official Ubuntu mini ISO that I had completely forgotten about it.

So the key idea here is to exploit whatever difference there is between the full and minimal disc images that makes Ubuntu installation possible for use in eBox installations.
I think this indicates the common ground of this thread and the references to posts in other topics; how the installation process might polished to improve the user experience.  The first impression of working with eBox will be formed at the point of first installation.  If this is perceived to be difficult it may tend thereafter to adversely affect the opinion of eBox.

Perhaps the Devs might provide their views on such improvements.

With apologies to the original poster...

Hi, Sam Graf - long time no speak.
...it would be nice if eBox had a minimal ISO for network installation.
I made a suggestion in reply #14 of this thread which seems similar to your request.  Does it differ significantly from your suggestion?

...the server kernel, which doesn't work on everything...
Have you tried to install with the alternate installer from Ubuntu?
In the past I have experimented with successfully substituting the alternative Ubuntu installation and kernel in situations where the eBox ISO is unsuitable.  This workaround may not be readily apparent to eBox newcomers, particularly those accustomed to a Windows installation process.

A suggestion to improve the user-friendliness of the eBox installer for users experiencing these circumstances was made in replies 11, 12 and 13 of this thread: http://forum.ebox-platform.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=d502c1820995b571b9e719f1777c1bb8&topic=2153.0

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Minimum packages for file server?
« on: December 15, 2009, 11:16:59 am »
Is this enough for a simple backup dump server?
I'm not quite sure what you mean by this so it may be best for one of the Devs to advise you on this. I do know there has been a lot of development done to improve eBox's backup abilities in preparation for the forthcoming release, v 1.4.

...will I need to add more packages? If so, I'd like to do it now rather than later. I'm kinda scared of the CLI
A couple of points here...

@ J. A. Calvo
I've just uploaded a new iso that should solve the problem.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ebox-platform/files/ebox_installer-1.3.10-1.iso/download

Does the new ISO address the LVM problems referred to in these posts?

@ logic_center
I didn't intend to interrupt your thread but the symptoms you reported sound similar to my experience with an earlier release.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Audio and Video Streaming
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:18:43 am »
In the past I used SqueezeBox (Server) together with SqueezeSlave (Workstation).  The server was Ubuntu (not eBox) and the workstations were XP and Ubuntu.

It was audio only so it may not entirely fit your requirements.

The big attraction was the ability for each user to contact the server by web-gui and construct their own choice of stream content.  Their personal stream was then delivered to their workstation.  In effect multiple streams were output simultaneously, each individual stream having been constructed by each individual user.  The content of each stream was drawn from a single audio library held on the same machine as the SqueezeBox Server.

69
A good idea, particularly if it is available to both Windows and Ubuntu (eBox Desktop) workstations.

70
Thanks for your speedy response.

I try to look at eBox from the point of view of extending the working life of machinery which is no longer suited to Windows use.  I was concerned that the current implementation of Master/Slave was more appropriate to deployment within a modern, higher spec virtual machine and that this may restrict its appeal to those using older, lower spec equipment.

...if you don't have extra hardware you'll certainly like to use your master for more duties. That's why there's already code in our repo that allows users to do that. We have to test it before releasing it.
This is welcome news.  Will it be announced in the forum when it is ready?

A couple of supplementary questions...

  • Might it be possible for the LDAP master and remote backup server to co-exist on the same physical machine without compromising data security or using incompatible modules?
  • Will the profiles used by eBox installer prevent the installation of incompatible functions?

71
I would like to check my understanding of the effect of deploying this function before I test it.  Comments from the eBox staff will be particularly welcome along with those of other members.

Referring to the following topics:
http://forum.ebox-platform.com/index.php?topic=2020.msg8524
http://forum.ebox-platform.com/index.php?topic=2009.msg8538

Does the use of Master/Slave mean the minimum practical eBox LAN will require three discrete machines when physical hardware is used?

Example - Substituting eBox for Windows Server:
  • Machine1 is a PDC conducting authentication, shares etc
  • Machine2 is the LDAP master, plus possibly supplying other functions.  These functions will be restricted to eBox modules that do not depend upon a local installation of LDAP functions other than ebox-usersandgroups
  • Machine3 is a backup server for the LAN which is currently being developed for the 1.4 release.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Microsoft Internet Explorer 8

My Suggestion, use a different browser other then internet explorer
Better results will be obtained by using Firefox as this is the browser which eBox is designed to use.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: How to add unknowprinter
« on: September 30, 2009, 11:58:46 am »
@sixstone

Is it possible to provide an indication of when development of the ebox-printers module might begin?  It is good to see the roadmap for version 1.4 being populated, but printers are not listed to receive the 'love' you mention.  An idea of where it is in the list of priorities will be very helpful.

74
@J. A. Calvo
Elsewhere in the forum I have seen reference made to the command:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure eboxWhat does this do?  Does it allow the eBox configuration values to be input manually?

The following observations seem pertinent:
  • The information referred to was last updated in 2004
  • It makes no reference to recovering data from an ext3 file system on a RAID1 array which is not readable due to misconfiguration but is otherwise intact
  • It makes no reference to recovering data from an ext3 file system on a RAID1 array on which the files are not accessible/readable due to misconfiguration
  • An address of a site with a range of tools has been provided

At this juncture I will withdraw from any further input and leave other members to offer whatever assistance they wish to.
