Other modules / Re: WEP encryption setup for wireless access point
« on: April 28, 2016, 09:54:25 am »
apt-get install hostapd

Then proceed setting up hostapd from command line. Can't be done from Zentyal GUI. Google helps with the configuration of hostapd.

Also, wireless card must be itself hostap-capable, you can't just use random card and expect it to work as access point. Most cards do not. Atheros cards work best, some Ralink cards work as well but are somewhat buggy. Personally using dual-band  Atheros AR9462 over Mikrotik RB14EU host-adapter card.

Instead of WEP use WPA+WPA2.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal machine won't boot

forgot to add in initial post.

After editing /etc/default/grub, you would have to

sudo update-grub

Changes made in GRUB2 configuration file won't have any effect without.

I don't actually know how to define it fast and clear.

Background:
My ISP hands out broadband internet over fiber. It provides IPTV over VLAN 4 and I have no problems getting it using Zentyal. As soon as I trunk it and allow DHCP on VLAN4 I get appropriate IP address on interface.

Problems:
Problems start when I want "normal" internet as well. Internet "part" does not have defined VLAN tag. Or it's defined as VLAN 0 according to DD-WRT config files pulled from ISP official Inteno routers. ISP support technicians either don't know themselves or say I would not need any tag.

"Zentyal's GUI way" of interface configuration prohibits me from using VLAN 0 ("I'd be getting error message of appropriate values being between 1-4095). It also prohibits any other use of trunked "parent" interface although nothing in linux itself forbids it. I tried it on plain Ubuntu and got instant IP addresses on eth1 (normal Internet) and manually trunked eth1.4 (IPTV) without problems. Config file I edited was /etc/network/interfaces

I would like to see that Zentyal allow further use of trunked parent interface (possibility of assigning static IP/DHCP) and/or include VLAN0 into VLAN configuration.

Installation and Upgrades / Zentyal machine won't boot
« on: November 30, 2015, 08:29:03 pm »
Zentyal system (Zentyal Development version 4.2) fails to boot unless I boot into recovery and edit /etc/default/grub manually, commenting out

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash net.ifnames=1 biosdevname=0"

and uncomment
GRUB_TERMINAL=console
GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

Reason. Or what I believe it to be

[   10.196483] [drm] VGACON disable radeon kernel modesetting.
[   10.196511] [drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!

System in question has AMD "Kabini" APU.
It's not "can't see screen but system runs", it's total standstill of a machine until power button has been pressed.

Perhaps it's helpful for somebody else, struggling same issue.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: I keep getting squid errors
« on: March 25, 2015, 03:59:06 pm »
same, EXCEEDINGLY annoying problem. Two reinstalls and can't get fucking rid of it.

2 different subnets defined in Objects. One "allow all" for "All time", other has about dozen rules in total and for "All time". Squid is blocking BOTH subnets by "104, connection reset by peer". Im thinking on installing FreeBSD instead of this quick-and-dirty ubuntu hack and conf all manually step-by-step. Probably would waste LESS time than wrestling with this bs...

Trying to share out folders in Samba with public access. Zentyal demands enabling Guest account. I enabled it

but it still complains that "Guest" should be enabled

after trying to ignore it and proceeding, still no "Guest" while trying to set up users

Had only Zentyal 3.0 cd from old times. Installed it and step-by-step upgraded it to 3.4. Worked like a charm, though the process itself was lengthy
So it looks that there is a problem upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4

maybe, maybe not. It went like 3.0->3.1->3.2 (or was it straight 3.2 from 3.0?)->3.3->3.4, with reboots between each upgrade
Later, I tried straight 3.4 install and it would'nt recognize USB keyboard past GRUB

Installation and Upgrades / Re: occasional lag spikes
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:53:32 pm »
about once a minute on average when I have box with Zentyal acting as gateway

Estonian ISP Elion.

When I connect the WAN cable to gaming pc directly, no issues whatsoever. But not really willing to having workstation that close to "wild Internet". And I really like some of the Zentyal features and easy UI

Could it be some occasional lag in handling the UDP packets?

EDIT: tracked the issue down. shellcommand "top" is telling me that while I am getting lag spikes, some process named "s4sync" is hogging most of the cpu for a short time, it appears and disappears. Any way to deal with that daemon without killing off Samba itself?

Installation and Upgrades / occasional lag spikes
« on: October 25, 2013, 03:35:37 am »
Hello. I ran into issue where I am often getting lag spikes while playing. Games were Battlefield 3 and 4 Open Beta.

lag itself consists of "be doing something and you sometimes move  back to where you were second or two a go". It often gets me killed because for other players in the same server I appear during a moment of such lag as motionless (or drive straight ahead in vehicles).

I am after some testing  convinced that Zentyal serving my home net is responsible. Why?
a) started noticing lag spikes right after installing Zentyal
b) had never any lag while this  box ran pure FreeBSD firewall or I shut the Zentyal machine down and connected WAN cable directly to gaming PC.

Said "box" has Socket754 desktop motherboard with AMD Turion64 ML-34, 1Gb RAM and 500Gb notebook Sata HDD.NIC is Intel Pro1000 for PCI slot and integrated nvidia gigabit LAN.

Internet connection is 100/20Mbit fiber with open ports and no traffic shaping from ISP.

For start I tried removing every other Zentyal package not necessary for firewalling and NAT. Had same exact lag issue even with the barest Zentyal setups possible.

Any advice or similar experience with eventual solution would be nice.

Edit: version of the Zentyal is latest 64bit variant, installed without X (downloaded about week a go and fully updated). Not beta.

to be on the safe side, get decent Intel (1000MT/CT/GT) NIC.. Plenty of those for sale in EBay and you can pick up even cards meant for servers for quite cheap.

Realtek's have stability problems even under Windows, not to mention often enough in Linux or BSD-s..
especially RTL8139 series is horrendous

Also, often they have problems using Bus Master DMA (or wont support it at all) which leads to using a lot of system CPU resources, near gigabit speeds, usage of CPU becomes quite noticeable..

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal Router/Firewall
« on: October 21, 2012, 05:18:38 pm »
pfSense is another alternative, its dedicated pure firewall/routing solution though.. you can add custom packages like squid/dansguardian/countryblock etc.. but nothing like Zentyal if you need Samba, mail and so forth.. pfSense install is lightning fast, iso/img are only 100mb, whole operation takes around 5-10min. Setting up works over WebUI and TTY console. Or SSH.

about routing table getting filled up..
P3 450MHz with pfSense can take roughly 17000 simultaneous connection
2,7GHz Sempron140 -- ,,-- can take about 180000 simultaenous connections..
common household routerbox will die around 1000 top..

pf firewall is very very fast, somewhat less features compared to iptables though.. it comes down to personal taste in the end.
