News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal 4.1 available!
« on: April 02, 2015, 08:05:40 pm »
Since I started deploying Zentyal a couple of years ago, I too was disappointed whenever some component or another was dropped. But since I am not a paying customer, I don't feel I have the right to complain. What I did, instead, was wipe my server clean and install the Proxmox virtualization environment (some would call it overkill for a single server solution, since it is also a fully-fledged cluster solution). Since most components are network-connected anyway, I can install multiple virtual machines and run missing pieces in another VM. It's also great that I can install multiple versions of software side by side, e.g. Zentyal 3.2 in one VM, 4.0 in another, and 4.1 in yet another, then start and stop them to do comparisons. In fact, I'll probably test out the aforementioned NethServer just to see how it suits my needs, alongside Zentyal. I've done the same thing with Univention Corporate Server. Whenever I decide I don't want to pursue a particular "server" further, I can just delete the corresponding VM.

Installation and Upgrades / SOGO without OpenChange?
« on: March 28, 2015, 06:08:25 pm »
I'm not completely clear about the relationship between SOGO and OpenChange, but this is what I believe: SOGO is a groupware server, providing shared contacts, email, and calendars; OpenChange is for making SOGO (and other groupware servers?) accessible by Microsoft Outlook (possibly other MS products?). Is this approximately correct? My main question is whether I need to configure or have installed the OpenChange component in Zentyal 4 if I don't plan to use Outlook. I would probably use the Thunderbird client on Windows machines, and Apple's Mail, Contacts, and Calendar applications on Mac machines. Any clarification would be most welcome. Thanks!

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Fresh install, cannot login

Not sure if this is the problem, but normally you configure at least two network interfaces, one marked as internal and another marked as external. By default, Zentyal's firewall blocks traffic originating externally (i.e. from IPs not on an internal network). In fact, when you are configuring the interfaces during initial setup, if you are connected to the user interface through the external interface, it gives you a warning.

I normally connect through the internal network or through a VPN connection, so this isn't an issue. If it is indeed the case, you can temporarily disable the firewall by ssh'ing into the system and typing "sudo service zentyal firewall stop", and after adding rules to the firewall to allow yourself in (left "as an exercise for the reader" :-), starting the firewall again with "sudo service zentyal firewall start".

Hope this helps.

Sorry, but I'm very far from being a Zentyal guru myself. You probably won't get many replies until you supply a bit more information. For example, had you just recently done any updates? Can you ssh into the machine?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Download failing
« on: November 14, 2014, 11:07:36 pm »
I didn't try downloading it yesterday (your last post) or on November 10 (your first post), but when I download it from the main page (actually the page that you go to after clicking "Get Zentyal for Free" link), it shows downloading 636 MB, nowhere near "7.5 up to 9.2 GB" that you mentioned. Want to give it another try? As the old saying goes, "don't go away mad...".

Installation and Upgrades / Re: zentyal 4.0 as a webserver
« on: November 14, 2014, 10:59:11 pm »
Kind of hard to diagnose without a bit more information. For example, how many network interfaces do you have? Are any of them marked as external? Are they DHCP or static? All this affects incoming/outgoing traffic.

Installation and Upgrades / Book on Zentyal 4?
« on: October 14, 2014, 06:54:45 am »
I know you guys are working hard to get 4.0 released in a couple of weeks, but I was wondering when/if there will be a new version of the book "Zentyal for Network Administrators"?

News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal 4.0 Roadmap Published!
« on: August 02, 2014, 05:11:59 am »
Good point and I missed the fork suggestion. Which really makes me wonder that actually we should fork Zentyal 2.0 but place it on the new ubuntu LTS.

Just wondered what others thought?

PS I know that sounds weird but just an idea that maybe an more linux pure with AD connectors and 3.0 would be better for Zentyal.

I dunno as just as happy with 3.0 but if any-one would like to kick start a thread in contributions it would be great if the community discussed.

I think it would be better in the long run (for the Zentyal ecosystem), to try to keep "resurrected modules" in sync with the Roadmap builds. But, I doubt this would work in practice, with the volunteer developers not being part of the planning and design of the Roadmap version. I can imagine very fundamental changes just showing up in HEAD and having to try to figure out how to deal with them. Maybe the best would be to fork the current release, then work on adding modules from the previous release. Then, when the Roadmap release is out, start updating the modules for that release. If the modules work as advertised, perhaps Zentyal the company would be interested in bringing them back into the following Roadmap version. Is there a list of all modules that have ever existed, along with the versions that they were included in?

Perhaps we need a "Developers" forum.

Thought I would kickstart things a bit I am going to have a go at the Zarafa Module because I think Openchange is a great idea but until it has bedded in a bit I think Zarafa the free version is a good basic groupware package.
Going to move to a new post in contribution Zarafa community module & development.

I'm glad to see someone stepping up to get started on maintaining a dropped module. I have never used Zafara, and I may or may not use it in the future, but I applaud your stepping up to the plate and look forward to hearing how it goes. One of the reasons I got interested in Zentyal is as a way to learn how to do a modern single-page web application. Zentyal is cool in that it uses some very mature (practically ancient by today's standards) technology (Perl) on the backend and modern JavaScript/HTML/CSS on the frontend.

I may just dust off the old Camel Book and see how it goes with the UPS (nut) module. Seems that would be a lot simpler as a starter. If that goes okay, then maybe the virtualization manager would be a next step - it is something I never got a chance to use, as it was moved to contrib before I started with Zentyal.

I'm ambivalent about the dropped features. None of them are showstoppers for my installation, so I hope this gives the team time to make the product more rock solid. What I would like to ask, though, is how feasible is it for us developers to add features back in our own local installations/forks?

I've seen a lot of references to "moved to contrib". From a repository standpoint, this appears to mean that "modules" are moved from the "main" subdirectory to the "contrib" subdirectory of "zentyal" (which is one of several GitHub repositories owned by the "Capital Z" Zentyal user). Is there any documentation on how to add modules?

I had originally thought that Zentyal would be a modular system where you could fairly easily add or remove modules (ClearOS calls them "apps" - more trendy terminology, but still the same concept as modules, I think). But from looking at the code quite a bit, I'm thinking I was wrong. Could someone enlighten me a bit?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: VPN Server without Port Forwarding

Thanks, I might take you up on your offer if I get stuck. As far as my IT department goes, I'm it :-)  Of course I have control over my own routers at work and at home. The routers I'm talking about are those of the two internet service providers that the business (a five-person medical clinic) and I at home use. I'm the sole computer guy there, and an unpaid volunteer at that.

Royceb, the topology is roughly as you imply:

    [My Work LAN] <---> [Work ISP Router] <---> [Internet] <---> [My ISP Router] <---> [My Home LAN]

Either [Work ISP Router] or [My ISP Router] or both blocks nearly all incoming ports (I believe only 80 is unblocked). I may be able to get them to open 1194. If you are interested, browsing from [My Home LAN] to the site you pointed out shows 190.152.94.145 as the address. I haven't tried it from [My Work LAN], but I suspect it will be similar as far as open ports. I thought that it is pretty common for ISPs to block most incoming ports, and is why Relay VPNs like you mentioned are popular. In any case, I am setting up an OpenVPN relay on a free Amazon EC2 VPS, which I believe may take care of the problem.

I don't have an answer for you, but I would just comment that after several flawless installs of 3.4 and 3.5 in virtual machines (VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox), installing 3.5 on real server hardware was harder than I had expected. Specifically, network configuration found two devices "em0" and "em1" rather than the expected "eth0" and "eth1". After finishing configuration, they automagically got changed to eth0 and eth1. I mention this because I had previously had generic Ubuntu 12.04 installed, and had never tried 14.04 on the hardware. So, maybe you have similar problems and 14.04 drivers don't support your hardware...just a thought. Have you looked into whether 14.04 supports your hardware?

Installation and Upgrades / Hamachi / IPV6 on 3.5
« on: July 20, 2014, 05:18:27 am »
I have been trying to install Logmein Hamachi on Zentyal 3.5, initially without success. Hamachi's log showed that it was failing on opening an IPV6 connection. I did a diff on /etc/sysctl.conf between the Zentyal installation and that of a generic Ubuntu 14.04 server, and the only difference was that Zentyal's sysctl.conf had three lines added to it at the end:

    net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
    net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
    net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

I commented these lines out and rebooted, and Hamachi works fine. The question is whether this is likely to break Zentyal.

Comments?

Well, as some of us here in Ecuador say, "Mañana doesn't always mean tomorrow, it just means not today." :-)

I finally got around to following the techrepublic article. It is at least slightly out of date, as it covers whatever version was current as of May of last year, but I managed to follow it and I'm still not getting connectivity. I'm pretty sure port 1194 on my ISP's router is closed, but I see that I can configure the port in Zentyal. So, a new question would be, how can I check what ports are open?
