Thanks, I'll try that!

Is there any way to patch this into the current/next release? It's one of the few things holding me back from rolling out eBox in a lot of locations.

I'm not sure that those routes actually are invalid. You see, 239.0.0.0 is part of the socalled Class D network, which ranges from 224.0.0.0 to 239.0.0.0 and is reserved for multicasting packets, whereas the "normal" networks usually are used for unicasting. For more details, check here: http://www.multicasttech.com/faq/
The point of it all is to enable the media server to send out packets for identical streams only once to each client, instead of having to send them individually to each client when using unicasting. This is helpful if, for example, multiple clients are consuming the same video stream, thus saving lots of bandwidth by using multicasting.
Anyway, I think the main problem is that the current firewall module has no real concept of multicasting and always blocks it altogether, which inevitably breaks any uPNP functionality.

Any new dots on the radar screen?
Is there anything I can do? Research? Tell me where or what to look at and I'll give it (albeit amateur) a shot.

Installation and Upgrades / Feature-Request: uPNP support
« on: August 06, 2008, 10:57:19 am »
Ubuntu 8.04 includes a great uPNP server called MediaTomb. Currently, it can't coexist with eBox on the same system due to some mulitcat routing issues. Making this work would be really great for home systems used to store and stream media content to uPNP clients (PS3, xbox360, Rythmbox, etc.).

Installation and Upgrades / Feature-Request: SMTP-auth for smarthost
« on: August 06, 2008, 10:54:54 am »
My smarthost requires SMTP-auth for accepting any mail, even from local LAN. It would be great if authentication info could be added to the smarthost entry somehow.

Installation and Upgrades / MediaTomb & ebox-firewall
« on: August 06, 2008, 10:50:45 am »
I'm having serious issues trying to get eBox and MediaTomb to play nicely with each other.
MediaTomb is a uPNP-server for multimedia content (useful for streaming content to a PS3 or 360), which listens to mulitcast packets and needs to establish special routing/firewall rules for this. Somehow this works as long as ebox-firewall is not installed, but as soon as it is, MediaTomb stops working, although the service is still running.
I tried adding a rule in the ebox-firewall module that would allow any traffic between the LAN and the eBox/MediaTomb system, to no avail...
MediaTomb tries to add a route like "route add -net 239.0.0.0 eth0" to the system. When eBox is not installed, you can see that this route exists after starting the MediaTomb service. When eBox is installed, however, I suspect the route either is never added or gets cleared out by the ebox-firewall module.
How can I fix this?

Installation and Upgrades / eBox by Asus?

I just found this:
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/05/23/asus_e_dt_is_ebox/
Aparently Asus is making a desktop variant of their Eee-Laptop and are going to call it Ebox...

Installation and Upgrades / Re: eBox-software management module

Sure, but it doesn't look like clicking on the link adds any log entries to /var/log/ebox/ebox.log, here it goes anyway though:
Maybe /var/log/ebox/error.log is more helpful?
Is there anything else I can post here to help you narrow down the problem?

« on: May 12, 2008, 05:40:39 pm »eBox lists the printer drivers returned by foomatic-db. I don't know how to make it list (if possible) drivers which are not listed by default in that DB. I need to do some research on that
I was wondering whether there's any news on this?

Installation and Upgrades / eBox-software management module
« on: May 12, 2008, 05:37:43 pm »
I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as well as the new 0.11.100 packages and all is well, except for the eBox software module:
The other menu items (system updates, automatic updates) seem to work well, only the ebox components throw this error.
Any idea what's causing this and how to fix it?

I don't know how many of the devs are aware of this: http://wiki.samba.org/index.php?title=Ldapsam_Editposix&printable=yes
Basically, Samba now fully supports LDAP as a backend, without the need of any of the usual scripts like smbldap-tools etc.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Using the web server on eBox 0.11.99
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:13:01 pm »
Can you explain how eBox interacts with Apache2 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS? Which parts of the Apache2 configuration are managed by eBox and which parts can I control?
You see, I'd like to use Munin to monitor my eBox server, but it puts it's output under /var/www/munin and in the default configuration, I can't access anything on port 80, even though nmap says that port 80 is listening.

News and Announcements / Re: eBox 0.11.99 testing packages for Ubuntu Hardy (8.04)
« on: April 29, 2008, 08:13:05 pm »
Now that Ubuntu 8.04 has been released, how will the pending modules ever make it into the Ubuntu repositories? Will there parallel ones specific to eBox again or will they be published in the backports repository?

I posted a question regarding this in the linux foundation forums, who seem to be maintaining the foomatic db: http://forums.linux-foundation.org/read.php?24,4755,5552#msg-5552
Maybe you can add a more specific question after mine?
