Dear eBox users,

Just in case you still didn't notice - the new homepage design on http://www.ebox-platform.com and some minor style updates on http://trac.ebox-platform.com and http://forum.ebox-platform.com/ just went live this morning!

The main aim of these changes has been to grant both the new and the current eBox users an easier access to the most requested content and to give a better understanding of what eBox Platform is and what we're up to.

We hope that you find the changes useful and enjoy the new design as much as we do :)! Please let us know if anything is missing!

eBox Team

P.S. For some time now we have our eBox Planet, eBox Group on Facebook, eBox Twitter account, eBox channel on YouTube, etc. If you are interested in following us, you have a full list of the available media at the home page now.

We're proud to announce that an essay regarding the Advanced Network Service Testing Environment (ANSTE) that was developed in order to carry out eBox Platform testing has been included in O'Reilly's Beautiful Testing book that is to be published on the 30th of October. Beautiful Testing, edited by Tim Riley and Adam Goucher, offers 23 essays from 27 leading testers and developers that illustrate the qualities and techniques that make testing an art.

"eBox Platform is a complex tool that integrates a number of independent network services, released as a set of independent modules that need to be thoroughly tested to prevent regressions and to verify the correct functioning of each feature" said Isaac Clerencia, author of the "Testing Network Services in Multimachine Scenarios" essay and developer at eBox Technologies. "After a year or so since we started developing eBox Platform, getting a new release out had become a struggle due to the lengthy testing and quality assurance process. What is more, these tasks had quickly become the most dreaded ones among eBox developers and we figured out that something had to be done."

"As we couldn't find an existing testing tool that would suit our needs, we ended developing our own open source testing suite" said José Antonio Calvo, ANSTE developer and developer at eBox Technologies, and continued "the result was ANSTE that allows you to easily define complex network scenarios with multiple virtual machines, to run or to remotely schedule the tests according to pre-defined test suites that include command-based and Selenium-based tests and finally obtain a full report that is made available through a web interface."

"We think ANSTE is a beautiful network service testing solution that can help in the testing process of any software that involves several machines connected to a network" said Isaac Clerencia. "ANSTE has already been successfully used to test MySQL clusters and we think it could also be useful for other projects, such as XMMP or Squid, for example. We are extremely glad for being included in the Beautiful Testing to give more visibility to the project for a good cause."

We're glad to announce that we've put together a screencast on how to set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with eBox Platform. The screencast shows step-by-step how to create and configure a Certification Authority (CA), user certificates, a VPN server and the clients with eBox.

Together with the official documentation regarding VPN set up you should be able to allow secure access to the corporate network to remote users and secure interconnection of geographically distant networks.

You can also find interesting the screencast on Basic Network Configuration or if you are a professional eBox user, the screencast on eBox Control Center.

You can view the screencasts also at YouTube:

Hi! We just received the following message: I'd appreciate if you could give him a hand! Thank you in advance! Best, Heidi

Dear sir, dear madam,

unfortunately our recent endeavours in installing eBox v1.2-1 on an i386 platform as a perimeter firewall/router failed.

Right now e run a GNU/Linux HPC with Ubuntu Server 8.04 SE (security enhanced) and Xubuntu 8.04 SE on our clients. As a logical step we wanted to introduce eBox v1.2-1 on two legacy platforms to provide us with a web proxy, DNS and NTP fallback server and ipfilter.

We finally managed to get around the PAE and CMOV errors by installing "linux-i386" packages. Nevertheless the system does not operate correctly since the recent installation probably broke some dependencies. On system startup we face an error whilst reading from disc drive (CDROM) and the web interface cannot be reached too.

It seems like we have to double check the installation or start over with a distribution like IPCop, monowall, eisfair/eis4l or Zeroshell. In case you can assist us in fixing our routers/firewalls we'd appreciate that much.

Hi! We just received the following question from Sijbren. I'd appreciate if you could help him out: I'll re-direct him to the Forum! Thank you in advance, once again :)! Heidi

Hello,

I'm currently working on an LDAP server with Ebox software. For the clients i use ebox-desktop.

Now i'm running into the following problem:

When i login on my client pc it works perfectly, it creates a directory at /home/samba/users/

But this is quite annoying because when i logon on another client pc it creates a new account for me, and i would like my files to be synced from the last logout.

So my question is how do make it possible to load and save the userprofile on the ldap server so that i can use that profile on every computer?

I hope i described the problem good enough.

Thanx in advance.

Installation and Upgrades / eBox as a backup domain controller
« on: September 10, 2009, 12:50:11 pm »
Hi! We just got this question from Louis. I'll re-direct him here: could you please shed some light on the issue? Thanks :)! Heidi

Two questions before I deploy ebox as a domain controler for 250 users.

1) Can EBOX act as a backup domian controler.
2) If so do I have to copy the smbpasswd file manualy or ebox takes care of replication.

Hello!

We just got the following message regarding installing eBox as a linux file share / e-mail server. Could you be so kind and help Shannon out? Thank you in advance! BR, Heidi

I just installed ebox to use as a linux file share / email server.  First off, I can connect via an outside computer to access the html interface, however I can not connect to the server in the manner described in the how to's. Second, I keep getting a message that says "To run ddclient as daemon, please set run_daemon to 'true' in /etc/default/ddclient" what does this mean, and how do I go about that? I am a severe novice!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Shannon

Hola

Installation and Upgrades / Problem with the ISO download
« on: April 18, 2009, 09:49:48 am »
Hi! We have received this message from James. I would appreciate if you could answer him and share the information with everybody. I'll re-direct him to the forum. Thank you in advance :)! Heidi

I have downloaded the iso twice from your website, I first burnt the iso to cd and ran it in a clean machine, unfortunatly when I ran the MD5 I got an error that they didn't match. I then downloaded it again and this time run the iso in a VM Wares VM and checked the ISO with the same error.

Is this just a bad download ie cache somewhere on my ISPs server  or is there a greater problem with the code being changed?

regards
James.

Installation and Upgrades / Setting eBox as a secure gateway
« on: April 01, 2009, 02:13:58 am »
Hello!

We just got the following questions regarding eBox. Could you please answer and share the information with everybody? Thank you again :)! BR, Heidi

Currently Untangle is used as a security gateway for the network. The solution is adequate but we are dissatisfied with the accuracy of the spam detection, hence the testing of ebox.

Ebox is a little more demanding in the setup process however we have a test setup running with 2 issues:

1: When the transparent pop filter is enabled we are not able to download any mail. Sending is not an issue.

2: We also access a java based currency and share streamer, Xtend. The screen is produced OK but no data.

Installation and Upgrades / Load Balancing and Fail-over
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:10:50 am »
Hi!

We have received the following questions from Jemba. Could you please answer him and share the information with everybody? Thank you again! BR, Heidi

Hi,
I have been using pfsense for load balancing and fail-over, I have setup a new ebox server and I want to know if ebox can support load balancing and fail-over.

I came accross this article http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/experiences-with-ebox-platform-total-network-solution-for-small-business/

Do you have a setup manual that I can use to get fail-over to work on ebox? Thanks
