Robb,
Just call me stupid. When I created a new Zentyal, I forgot to set the Network Adapter (in VirtualBox) to Bridged i.e. it was default of NAT. OK now.

I don't remember the original setup of DNS in Core / Network / DNS.
Currently, in Infrastructure->DNS section: Domain is zentyal-domain.Ian, Domain IP Address is 192.168.1.100, Hostname is zentyalJohn with IP Address of 192.168.1.100, and there are no Forwarders.

PS the email sent by the forum confusingly shows a different message to that on the website:
email: If Zentyal acts as a Gateway eth0 and eth1 MUST be in different subnets.
forum: How did you set DNS in Core / Network / DNS?
and are there any forwarders in Infrastructure / DNS?

To enable File Sharing, I also set the domain's ip address to 192.168.1.100 i.e. the same as the eth0 ip address. However, this stops successful ping of 192.168.1.1 (i.e. the router) & 192.168.1.12 (i.e. Ubuntu acting as the VirtualBox host which I want to use as a client to Zentyal for File Sharing). I also now cannot successfully internet browse (on Zentyal) e.g. to www.bbc.co.uk

Currently, I have 2 interfaces (eth0 & eth1) with one having a router DHCP ip address & set as external, and the other having a static ip address in the router's subnet

Re-reading your posts, this means they are both in the same subnet. Is this correct?
If so, configure the interface in VBox as 'bridged' it will make an IP address in the same subnet as the host possible. Then just disable 1 interface and set the other with a static IP address in the same subnet as your router and uncheck external. Set your router as default gateway. In this case, Zentyal does not act as a gateway. Configured like this, Zentyal should be able to reach the internet.

I tried to put them in the same subnet (255.255.255.0)  but it didn't work.

I've amended the settings in Virtualbox (after Powering Down Zentyal) so that there is only one network adapter (eth0) and it is a Bridged Adapter. I then started Zentyal (in Virtualbox), ensured that there was only 1 interface (eth0) and it has a static IP address (192.168.1.100) with Netmask of 255.255.255.0 and External(WAN) is unchecked. I added a Gateway for the router's IP address (192.168.1.1) with it set as default. As I might have previously said, the Ubuntu host has a static IP address of 192.168.1.12. I saved the changes successfully. I'm now able to successfully Ping the router & the Ubuntu host (using 192.168.1.12). I tried the System Updates again and it did it.

Thanks for the (successful) advice.

The purpose of this exercise is to gain knowledge of Zentyal in a test environment. So it's possible that I may have made some stupid errors.

Modules:
Network
Firewall
Antivirus
DNS
Events
Log
Mail
Monitoring
NTP
File Sharing
Users & Computers

Services:
Any protocol & port
Groupware
Incoming mail

Not sure what you mean by the question "Should Zentyal act as a Gateway too". I want Zentyal to connect to the router to download updates, receive mail & I don't as yet know what else. Also, I would like to File Share Zentyal's 'data' files with Ubuntu (the Virtualbox host). Currently, I have 2 interfaces (eth0 & eth1) with one having a router DHCP ip address & set as external, and the other having a static ip address in the router's subnet. Virtualbox has 2 adapters, both set as NAT.

My last question was rather stupid!

I am not able to update Zentyal s/w or even to ping my router (192.168.1.1) or another Ubuntu computer. I've disabled the Firewall. What should I do?

PS I've tried adding a gateway for the router with no success on Pinging.

I gave Zentyal 2GB memory & it has improved response time & I am now able to do Save without it hanging.

I now have eth0 with external (WAN) unchecked as 192.168.1.100; router is 192.168.1.1 & Ubuntu (Virtualbox host is 192.168.1.12). File Sharing module is installed & activated. However, even though I have 2 Network Adapters set for Zentyal in Virtualbox, I'm not able to configure eth1 (it objects to 192.168.1.101 as it's in same network as eth0). How do I have Ubuntu as client of Zentyal server with Zentyal pretending to be connected to my router?

I noticed on the window complaining about Samba not being provisioned.." that there was a link to click on to set the domain  zentyal...Ian (I think that was the default during Installation). SO I clicked that & setup an ip address for the domain also as 192.168.1.100 and then the File Sharing was setup OK when I requested it.

I'm running Zentyal 3.3 32 bit in Virtualbox 4.1.12 under Ubuntu Precise 64 bit. I want to be able to communicate between my Ubuntu host and my Zentyal guest regarding Zentyal as the server for the Ubuntu client and the Zentyal effectively connecting to my router: that's why I set the localhost & domain fro Zentyal as 192.168.1.100 since the router is 192.168.1.1 and my Ubuntu is 192.168.1.12. I've noticed that there is a very slow response from Zentyal: I wonder if this could be due to my having to do something in Virtualbox settings for the Zentyal guest in regard to setting eth0 to 192.168.1.100. Is that reasonable?
PS I'm fumbling because I'm not familiar with Virtualbox & Zentyal.

Thanks. I have set (in that window) Name to eth0, Method to Static, External (WAN) checked, & ip address to 192.168.1.100. Now when I check the Status of File Sharing & Domain Services, I get Samba can't be provisioned ... need ip addresses for Domain & Host. What do I do now?

After installing Zentyal 3.3, I checked the module for File Sharing etc and it said that I need to set the ip address for local hostname. It's possible that I missed setting it on the initial installation. How do I set it now, preferably using the Dashboard etc (i.e. not by CLI)?

JA Calvo,

Apologies if I have offended you. The point that I was trying to communicate is that, as a potential Zentyal user (who would like to install it on my clients' networks who would pay for support), I need to see that Ubuntu Desktops (as well as Zentyal Server) would be stable: for this stability, the zentyal-desktop package is almost essential as I regard ldap communication (between server & desktop) as essential. I'm grateful for your quoting of the timeline URL showing bugs fixed / enhancements 'done'. However, from a user perspective, I would like to know when the zentyal-desktop package will be stable. Could you advise?

tennisrx,

Thanks for suggestion But I'd previously set that rule to Accept.

No reply to Zentyal ticket 2678 re zentyal-desktop package. Does anybody know what's happening in the ebox company? This ldap glitch seems to me to be a critical one preventing takeup of Zentyal?

Only 'Authentication Failure' is displayed. That disappears within a few seconds. auth log is attached as a tar.gz as it's 150 kb uncompressed (i.e. too big for this forum's attachment max size).

I've reported a bug on Zentyal (ticket 2678 though it hasn't put it fully onto its database as it's not retrievable even as one of My Tickets). Hopefully, this might make zentyal-package work as per the documentation on
http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Document/Documentation/ZentyalDesktop/Ubuntu
i.e. the user (as defined to Zentyal) and their home directory is created by a script located at /usr/share/zentyal-desktop/zentyal-setup-user - implied by screen shot showing a keyed-in Username with Other..  showing on the Ubuntu Login window.
