Installation and Upgrades / Roaming profiles and user shares
« on: July 03, 2013, 04:46:01 pm »
I would like to know if anyone has turned off the roaming profiles and if they had any problems in doing so. My boss had turned it on thinking he needed to to access the user shares (H drives). Is that true or can users still access those shares after roaming profiles has been turned off? I'm a little nervous that if i just turn the roaming profiles off there may be data loss on the users end. Is that a valid concern? If it is, is there a way to be sure it doesn't happen?

Thanks for the quick reply. The big issue is with the Macintosh computers right now. The only android device is mine and I'm not afraid to "tweak" my phone a bit to make things work. The Mac laptops on the other hand are the two owners' and they need vpn performance that they just are not getting from open vpn. This is no fault of open vpn. Apple has stated that in previous versions of OSX, they were not properly pulling all of the "important" network data. This boils down to a bunch of data not really needed for browsing the network or samba shares. In lion they "fixed" this issue and now vpn crawls. I'm not sure a different protocol will work better or not but the powers that be say that I need to test them to be sure. So, that's where I am now. I think I'm going to have to give each laptop a dynamic DNS. At least that's where I'm heading at the moment.

To begin, my company has a network with all kinds of machines connected to it. Win7, xp, osx, ios, android, are all needed to play relatively nice together as well as get along with any networking and vpn protocols being used. That brings me to my issue. I have three macs that need to connect to our network through a vpn. I've configured an OpenVPN vpn and it works great with my windows machines but the macs just dog when trying to connect to network drives and samba shares. This is a known issue with osx but I want to test connecting them through an IPsec connection (mainly because my boss wants me to). These machines are on the road quite extensively so I was wondering if there was a way to configure the zentyal IPsec vpn to allow for this road warrior configuration? Forgive me if this seems like a ridiculous question. VPN and networking are not my specialty (but that seems to be changing).

Thanks in advance,
Steve

On the Configuration and Status tab, I adjusted my configuration to match my backup setup and went to save the changes. I clicked the Change Button then the Save Changes button. The screen went to the progress screen and the progress went to 100%. Normally when the progress bar reaches 100%, it takes a second then the bar goes away and a link appears to take you back to the dashboard. When trying to save the ebackup changes, the progress bar never goes away. I click the back button in my browser and change other settings then try to save them. When I do this, the progress bar will appear but then it errors out telling me that "Some modules reported error when saving changes. More information on the logs in /var/log/zentyal/ The following modules failed while saving their changes, their state is unknown: ebackup". The first time this happened, I tried to keep re-saving the settings. I kept screwing with it for a while until I decided to restart the server and see if that would help. Upon doing that, the server would not finish booting. The boot screen was different from the normal boot screen I was accustomed to seeing when Zentyal would boot. It was very strange. I ended up scrapping the whole server and reinstalling Ubuntu and Zentyal. After the second installation, I set Zentyal up as similar as I could to the first instance and attempted to configure the ebackup module again. Sadly I seem to have the same issues as before. I have not restarted the server on this second instance yet. Any ideas? If need be I can post the logs If that may shed some light into the subject. Zentyal core version 2.2.6

News and Announcements / Re: New Zentyal 2.2-2 installer available!
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:18:41 pm »
hello,
I had some issues using the 2.2-1 installer to install zentyal on a KVM virtual machine. This mainly seemed to be with openbox causing the screen to flash and run the firefox window down to the bottom of the screen. Do you have any idea if this may have been addressed in the 2.2-2 installer

Well I've worked around the issue.
I ended up doing a scratch install of ubuntu 10.04 server on a new virtual machine. I only did the absolute basic Ubuntu install. Went in and did the repository edits mentioned on the zentyal install page and installed everything zentyal. After all that, I restarted the machine. and the screen was flashing. I went ahead and ssh'ed into the machine with putty and uninstalled openbox (even after reading up on it I'm not sure what it does) and rebooted one more time. Bingo! screen flash is gone and the web config works on the zentyal server and through https.

It's always frustrating when you want to check out a piece of software that you've read up on and everyone says is awesome only to have so many problems with the install. I'm not trying to push blame on anyone. Linux is a wonderfully flexible platform but with all of my inexperience and all those options it can be daunting. That's doubly frustrating when you are trying to install software that is intended to take a bulk of that complexity away and you have issues. Thankfully, I'm past this first hurdle... On to the next one!

I have tried uninstalling openbox as recommended by others in another thread and the flashing did go away when starting up zentyal server but firefox cannot connect to the localhost. I also cannot access the zentyal web interface from another computer. I have restarted the apache server but it did not help.

I managed to ssh into the server and run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade but still does not fix the screenflash or https issue.

I have just installed Zentyal on a newly created virtual machine. There seemed to be no problems during the install. When the server started up, the screen was flashing and the firefox window slowly works it's way to the bottom. I've seen that other people have had this issue but would like a better fix then what they have suggested. I also had this issue when using the KVM image provided by Zentyal on their website. I was able to work around it by changing the video driver from cirrus to vga in virt manager. I have tried this with my own installation but the server hangs at the beginning of startup telling me; Unknown command 'terminal' Out of range pointer 0x8022000. There also seems to be a problem with logging into the admin page. I try to go to the admin web page but it tells me that it is unable to connect. I can ssh into the machine and have followed suggestions from another thread in regards to doing an apt-get update and then restarting the apache server. This however does not seem to help the issue if there is one.

Edit to add some words that may help others: blinking openbox https
