Hi all!
The Zentyal Development Team is proud to announce that the 3.0-rc1 installer is now available for testing! This is the first release candidate for the 3.0 stable series: the next stable Zentyal server version, Zentyal 3.0, will be published on the 13th of September.
As the beta releases have ended, it means that this version comes already with all the Zentyal 3.0 features. From now on, all the focus will be on bugfixing (your help finding those bugs is crucial!), polishing details and also preparing the migration process from 2.2 to 3.0.
Regarding the changes since the last 2.3-2 release, we want to highlight the following:
* Brand new look & feel of the user interface!
* New samba module that integrates the beta5 version and allows Zentyal to join Windows Server domains!
* Some improvements in Zarafa, such as multi domain support and integration with Jabber
Moreover, a lot of bugfixing has been done too!
You can download the new installer, as usual, from the Beta Downloads (http://www.zentyal.org/beta) page.
The easiest way to test this release candidate is to do a fresh installation of Zentyal 3.0-rc1 having Internet connection to make sure that the latest versions of the packages are downloaded. If you already have a Zentyal 2.3-2 installed, you can upgrade the full system to get these new versions using the Software Management module or with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade in command line.
And please, remember that Zentyal 3.0-rc1 is a release candidate and it is not intended for production environments.
So, let the games begin! The finder of the biggest bug will receive tons of glory and fame!

Adding a few screenshots of the new user interface :)!

Hi, can I use this release for work environments? I ask this because I've recently moved a server to a new one with recent hardware, and Zentyal 2.3 wasn't compatible with many of the hardware so even I managed the way to make it work, the system is a bit unstable and I would like to have it working at 100% as soon as possible. So can I install this and have it working perfectly or should I wait for the definitive stable release?
Thanks
-
Was is 100% confirmed is that you can not ask 3.0-rc1 to be 100% stable and polished. Do expect some bugs here and there thus I would suggest that you do not use it for prod with such expectation in mind.
-
Ok, christian, thank you for your soon answer I'll wait for the stable release.
-
Fortunately that is not a long wait: 13 September is the planned release date of the stable Zentyal 3.0
And for the devs: a BIG BIG tumbs up for this milestone. Great work!!
-
Can we restore the 2.3 beta configuration on top of the 3.0-rc1 install? If not, I'll just do lots of screen shots!
Arch
-
I would say: wait 2 days and do an upgrade through update manager....
-
Great news!
And wish you all a good job of finding errors so that the new version reach a great success.
-

Is it just me or does the 3.0-RC1 image not install any zentyal packages at all?
It doesn't even have the zentyal repository added.
How do I install zentyal from this image? (I installed as minimal virtual server install).
-
Great work!
But is there any plans for using one ldap tree? Now zentyal have 1st ldap for mail, proxy and other service and 2nd for samba4,samba sharing.
Only internal side of scripts make user management work correct, cos adding users in both of ldap's.
On this stage for me is not clear one of the moments, if i change password at windows box(joined to domain) password for mail client will changed?
P.S. Any plans in future integrate openchange http://openchange.org?

Huh? I just downloaded the Zentyal 3.0-rc1 image, burned it to a CD and it installed just fine.

It seems not all install options lead to a Zentyal installation, then. Could anyone let me (us) know which options to chose and which not to chose?
I am running it on Hyper-V (shouldn't matter) which is why I chose minimal virtual server installation. Also, as I only want the bridge/firewall options, I'd prefer not to install too much (waste of space and requires maintenance).
-
Currently trying a normal installation that install X no less... I expect the final installation to be significantly larger than the minimal virtual install. I was hoping for a web-only solution but I know this is a pipe-dream as Zentyal firewall completely shuts off all communication when installed. I would still vote for at least letting zentyal web to pass through per default.
-
Well, I completed the normal installation and it all looked fine (installed network and firewall modules), up until the moment I configured eth0 and eth1 to be bridged with br1 using dhcp. This reconfiguration caused an error in zentyal (firewall) that I couldn't save anywhere (no text editor installed). Since that moment, my network configuration hasn't worked. Zentyal reports the correct configuration, but zentyal has no IP configuration anymore and the webpage is inaccessible as a result. I tried running "dhclient br1" which used to help on zentyal-2.3, but in 3.0 it fails with iptables giving this error: option "--physdev-is-bridged" cannot be inverted.
So, now I have a 3.0 install with no network configuration and no network access and no obvious way to proceed (except for a total reinstall).
I'd like to call this a huge bug. :-/

What about leafpad, nano and vim that are installed on a zentyal server by default?
-
In a followup to my previous network configuration issue:
Zentyal managed to produce a packet storm, shutting down the WAN switch.
Can anyone give me any insight in whether Zentyal is able to create a firewall usable on bridged networks or not? Currently, zentyal fails miserably, but that could be a beta issue.

You can call this a huge bug, but this time it's not a Zentyal one :)
We've checked it and it's a bug of iptables 1.4.12 (the version on the Ubuntu 12.04 repositories), luckily it was already fixed on the 1.4.13 version, so we hope the fix will hit the repository soon. I've already reported it on launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/iptables/+bug/1042260
-
Thank you for this research. I take it the fastest solution for me is to start all over and make a clean install (doesn't take so long) once iptables 1.4.13 has been released.
I take it zentyal should be able to bridge 2 nics and apply various working firewall rules? I am not doing something weird here, right?
-
Yes, bridged interfaces should work without problem as soon as iptables is fixed :)

Hi,
Just installed the beta....
I trying to solve the following scenario:
* We have a main site:
here are some win2008 servers, win7 desktops
We need a PDC and for those and some users/groups in the LDAP for authentication.
Is there any documentation how to do this with the new beta?
I just tried, but I was not able to join any machine. They were missing the ldap SRV entry from the domain.
But after I solved this, still got an error like this:
"This operation is only allowed on the primary domain controller of the domain"
* and 2 other site (in a hosting environment):
here are also some win2008 server and win7 (virtual) desktops
We also need a DC (per site) here to join the machines and to use the same user accounts as in the main site.
As I hope we will be able to set up 1 master DC and 2 slave for the hosted sites.
Is there any documentation how to do this with the new beta?
Thanks.

May I suggest that issues related to beta deployment are discussed in the right forum section instead of the "news and announcements" ?
If needed, please create your own topic there but do not jeopardize this one ;)

Anyone got any good guides on how to connect to Samba4 and start providing policies?
(in conjunction win 7)
I will post my own findings but just wondered.
-
Hi,
is there a upgrade-script or procedure to upgrade from Zentyal 2.2.7 tot 3?
Greetings
-
Dunno actually but being an RC I am just running it with virtual box.
Have a load of clones running at the moment with various module combinations.
My advice would be to wait for any production use.
Need any virtual box tips please ask away.
