I just lost my 3.5 zentyal configuration after a software update.
I can access the machine but network is not working anymore.
I asked for support on Zentyal but 3.5 is no longer supported.
Can I backup my 3.5 configuration and restore in 4.0 new machine ?

For some unknown reason, Zentyal does not configure correctly the file /etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap.conf
That's why you can't add machines on certain installations.
How to fix:
1) edit the /etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap.conf and change parameter defaultComputerGid to "544". Line will be:
defaultComputerGid="544"
2) alter this parameter also in the zentyal stub: /usr/share/ebox/stubs/samba/smbldap.conf
Hope this help others because I spent a lot time trying to find the problem...

That's why you can't add machines on certain installations.
How to fix:
1) edit the /etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap.conf and change parameter defaultComputerGid to "544". Line will be:

Olá FBravo, desculpe só responder agora. Esqueci de marcar o post para notificação...
Minha sugestão: Instale a ISO do Ubuntu Desktop e só depois instale o pacote do Zentyal. Já baixei duas ISOs do Zentyal e todas tinham problemas sérios de instalação.
Se você é novo no Ubuntu, use o GUI! Ele não é tão pesado que não possa ser usado em servidores, mesmo os virtualizados. Geralmente você irá perder uns 100Mb, ou seja 10% da memória de um servidor bem simples. Além disso, você pode habilitá-lo sempre que quiser utilizando o runlevel.
Sobre Server/Desktop: eu conhecia essas diferenças mas se o servidor não vai ter 500 usuários, você nem vai perceber. Eu tenho um servidor bem modesto aqui com 1Gb RAM/1 CPU Xeon e ele raramente chega a 15% de CPU com 50 usuários utilizando-o freneticamente
Suporte: se você tem orçamento para comprá-lo, vale a pena. Eles tem um representante no Brasil (em MG) que é muito prestativo. Mas o suporte é feito diretamente da Espanha em Inglês ou Espanhol.
O Ebox/Zentyal é muito estável: nos 4 anos que o utilizo, ele nunca deu um crash ou coisa semelhante. Mas o suporte é interessante para obter dicas de configuração e tuning.
Depois nos conte como foi a instalação.

I've been looking for this tip for more than 3 months...
I was using LUMA to navigate thru the LDAP database but I didn't know that the simple export LDIF was enough to do the migration.
Some questions:
- the linux users are created with same uid ?
- the password and the gid/uid was migrated too ?
- what about the groups that already exists in the destination LDAP (like "User Domain", "Administrators"). Did they remain untouched?

1 - Sabendo que o Zentyal é implementado sobre o Ubuntu 10.04 pensei em tentar implementar nele o que estava querendo. Gostaria de saber se posso usar o VMware com uma máquina virtual Win Server 2003 normalmente.
Eu não conheço o VMWare sob Windows mas a principio deve funcionar. Eu utilizo KVM sob Linux e funciona MUITO bem.
2 - Quais as diferenças entre a versão free e a versão paga ??
Não existe versão paga. Existe versão sem suporte e com suporte. Para uma microempresa no Brasil acho o suporte um pouco caro mas se vc tem orçamento para isso, vale mais a pena do que comprar uma licença de Windows Server.
3 - Qual o gerenciador de janelas usado no Zentyal 2.0.3 ?? Se ninguém logar no servidor pela interface gráfica, teoricamente ele se comportaria como um Ubuntu Server sem servidor X, seria isso ?? Isso seria muito importante pra poder decidir usá-lo ou não...
Ele vai usar o gerenciador que vc quiser! Inclusive não utilizar nenhum ! Bemvindo ao mundo Linux.
Eu utilizo com o Gnome normalmente mas poderia não ter instalado nenhum.

Idem. Você pode instalar tanto sob um quanto sob o outro. A diferença do Ubuntu Server é que ele vem por default sem GDM e sem quinhentos sofwares que já vem instalados por default. A nível de kernel, não muda nada.

Hi folks,
I use ebox for several years but now I have to migrate to Samba 3 due to Windows 7 machines authentications. Before give up and buy a Windows Server, I will try to make a last shot.
My strategy (based on [1]):
- Install a Zentyal as BDC (Backup Domain Controller)
- Copy users from PDC (ebox) to BDC
- Disable ebox machine
- Test
1) After Zentyal installation, I did not enable File Server
2) Change file /usr/share/ebox/stubs/samba/smb.conf.mas to indicate that Zentyal will be a BDC
domain logons = Yes
os level = 35
preferred master = No
domain master = No
3) Yet on this file, I change the domain name and hostname
workgroup = MEDIASYS
netbios name = LINUX13
4) Via web interface, I started the File Server service and then verify if it is really a BDC with command:
testparm
5) Enter the main domain:
net rpc join -S 192.168.0.11 -Ujosir%xxxx
where 192.168.0.11 is the ebox server.
6) I stopped here: how to import users and machines ?
Some guys said that the best solution is to do a ldap replication [2]
But I think this is not going to work becaus zentyal and ebox seems to have a different ldap tree.
I am also thinking about to make a script to create all users and reset all password on new server.
So, if someone has any glue I appreciate.

Just to add 2 cents. The problem is not limited to Firefox. Any application started by the gdm had the same problem...
I've chosen a vm machine because it supposed to be easier to configure.
How can Zentyal guys convince me to contract a paid support if they don't do their basic homework?
I was a ebox/zentyal enthusiast but after all this crashes and lacks of documentation I am very skeptical about them...

Estou com um problema semelhante: tenho um ebox antigo com samba 2 e estou querendo migrar para o zentyal (que tem samba 3).
Minha linha de raciocínio: (baseado em [1])
- Instalar a nova máquina como BDC (Backup Domain Controller)
- Ingressar no domínio
- Copiar os usuários e máquinas
- Testar!
1) Instalar o Zentyal (mas não habilitar o Samba ou o LDAP)
2) Alterar o arquivo /usr/share/ebox/stubs/samba/smb.conf.mas para indicar que ele será um BACKUP DOMAIN (BDC).
domain logons = Yes
os level = 35
preferred master = No
domain master = No
3) Ainda neste arquivo, colocar o nome do domínio e o nome do host
workgroup = MEDIASYS
netbios name = LINUX13
4) Via interface web, Dar o start dos serviços do zentyal para habilitar o File Server. Verificar se ele realmente é um BDC com o comando:
testparm
5) Ingressar a nova máquina no domínio existente com o comando:
net rpc join -S 192.168.0.11 -Ujosir%xxxx
onde 192.168.0.11 é o seu servidor de domínio antigo.
6) Eu parei aqui: como importar os usuários de um servidor para outro ?
Tem gente que fala para fazer a replicação direta do ldap [2]
Só que eu acho que não funciona com o zentyal pois a árvore do ebox é diferente do zentyal.
Enfim, estou parado nesse item [6]. Se tiver alguma dica, eu agradeço!
