A patched 7.0 works.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Server not reachable
« on: September 02, 2024, 10:06:39 am »
If this problem doesn't return, it was most probably because some eternal party crammed 3 other servers in my clients little server cabinet. And the server was just overheating. A reboot outside the cabinet solved it for now.

Installation and Upgrades / Server not reachable
« on: September 02, 2024, 09:39:17 am »
One of the servers running 7.0 is not reachable.
Can't open the shares, can't ssh, can't open the web console.
It is pingable. But it takes a whole while before it starts.
Internet still works. Full bandwidth.
And OVPN is also still working fine.
When I try to connect with Putty, it takes a while before it asks for the username. Then even longer for the password.
Just once I could log in, and I tried to restart the firewall first. But that didn't happen. I don't know if it started that processes.
Any suggestions?

Installation and Upgrades / DNS stopped, but starting the service disables the gui
« on: July 24, 2024, 09:44:51 am »
Hi,
Since this morning both paid servers stopped the DNS service. As soon as I tries to restart them, the webservice stopped (504 Gateway Time-out).
I tried to restart one server but that failed to reboot
[FAILED] Failed to start Bind Domain name server
And booting stops after [OK] Started time and date service.
The other server is still running but not working since you can’t restart the DNS and without DNS you can’t even access your fileshares.
restarting the dns using the command line didn’t work (it just halts indefinitely after the sudo zs dns restart ) same with restarting the firewall or webgui.
I've opened a ticket but I now have two customers down, so all help is appreciated.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Error 504 Gateway Time-Out Nginx Zentyal 8 fresh install

From my little experience. A restart from the firewall might help. Maybe check if some rules are incorrect?

I think I am spoiled with the ClearOS I was used to. I never experienced so many rough patches.
When I install by just going next next next you get everything on a 100Gb part of the LVM. Easy to resolve, but it makes no sense.
I ran into the issue that it doesn't support PPPoE with a fixed IP (https://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,35644.0.html) I now know it should work since under plain Ubuntu it works like I expected. I just don't know what happens if I mess with settings in the OS that do not align with the webinterface.
When making changes with the VLAN's (in the end I just gave up) and then going back to plain ethernet, you'll get all kind of issues, because Zentyal doesn't remove the VLAN settings, it just removes it from the interface.
Everything looks right, but things like DHCP/DNS/SAMBA just give up and won't start anymore.
And I am pretty sure there is a bug in the user/user rights.
If you make a user and then configure the rights, it probably works just fine. When you add 10 users and configure the rights, and then save. It becomes a lottery.
The webinterface tells everything is correct. But getting the client connected to the shares is a different thing. Completely random. like 3 of the 10 won't be able to connect to some share, sometimes even the personal one.
Luckily when you switch the Acces control from "read/write" to "administrator" or "read-only", save. Then switch it back and save again. Everything is works as expected.
I really believe Zentyal should use Beta testers.

Hi Luke,
What is the current status with 8.0?
If I understand correctly, Zentyal does not do Beta testing by users. But if you can use it, I'd be happy to make myself available.
7.1 had quite a few nonsensical settings that a beta tester had removed (for example, why on earth would you only free up 100Gb on your LVM).

Usually...
But not in this case. Not when It is a fixed IP from a range. It might not be common. But it is also not strange.
My previous serverOS (CENTOS based) had the inputfields when choosing PPPoE.
So, not possible?

Directory and Authentication / random filesharing behaviour
« on: October 29, 2023, 11:20:52 am »
I am installing a 7.1 Zentyal server as DC and gateway. About 30 users en a dozen shares. The clients are all freshly installed updated Win 10 pro.
I first configured the groups and then assigned the users to the groups and the groups to the shares.
This normally is pretty straight forward.
But now I have the weirdest behavior that some clients can't access the shares, even if I assign them to the user.
It seems so random. It is user related as far as I can find. (same computer, logged in on a different account can access said share, same user on an other computer still can't access the share. But since it is so random, it might be a coincidence) )
So the clients are joining the domain just fine (except one account that could log in, but after login got the message the user couldn't be logged in properly and should try to log out and in again).
They see the server and the shares but when I open them, you get the popup for other credentials, or Windows can't even find the share anymore but it is still in the list on the client.
I made some shares again in an other name, and that worked most of the times. Some shares just work as expected.
So one user can open the share, some don't. Even thought the accounts are set up exactly the same as far as I can tell.
Some possible red herrings
1. Under windows the shares seem about 90Gb even though I installed the server on a 8Tb disk and I choose "use whole disk".
2. During the install I wanted to make a share with guest access then I got the message I needed to enable the guest user.
Then I went to said guest user, and the disable option was marked but greyed out.
I went back to the share to disable the guest access, but the share still has guest access and I still see the message that I need to enable the guestuser.
I don't even know where I should start looking.
Is there some maximum amount of users to a share?
And what is supposed to happen when you have the default 500Mb limit and want to access a 7Gb share?
Any feedback where I should start would help.
Thanks in advance.

Installation and Upgrades / PPPoE with static IP
« on: October 28, 2023, 02:51:57 pm »
I wanted to replace a server with a zentyal one. The internet connection is over PPPoE but it doen not have DHCP.
How would I set the static IP and subnet/gateway in the PPPoE connection?
Cheers, Foeke

Thanks, it seems to have been fixed a month ago. At least a working fix has been made. How long before the update is pushed to our systems?

Directory and Authentication / No LNA for remote desktop users after KB5028166
« on: August 11, 2023, 12:13:31 pm »
Since this update, the users that want to work from home on their (Win10) workplace, get this error.
"The remote computer that your trying to connect to requires NLA but your windows domain controller cannot be contacted to perform NLA". If you switch off the mandatory NLA in the advanced rdp settings in Windows, they can log in over rdp again.
Removing the KB would also work I guess.
But why is the DC not available for NLA anymore?
It's running Zentyal 7.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal 8
« on: August 09, 2023, 09:40:20 am »Hi everyone. This thread was not being closely monitored, but I would like to assure you all that Zentyal is very much alive, supported by a small development team in Spain but is now US owned and headquartered in New York. The release of 8.0 was planned for 2023 midyear but was delayed due to installer issues, and a new installer had to be created, pushing the 8.0 release back to December 2023. The new installer is almost ready, along with many bug fixes. The development team leader stated that monthly releases are planned from December onward. We will be monitoring this feed more closely as we ramp up our efforts to deliver a stable product that we can all be proud of. Zentyal has been a well-supported product, and although the team is small, we plan to increase its footprint globally while building on a solid foundation.
In addition, The 7.1 release (updating the installer and several bug fixes) is being finalized for distribution by the end of June 2023.
Source: https://github.com/zentyal/zentyal/issues/2085
I would add the 7.1 release to "RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CHANGELOGS". Potential new customers might doubt the development if the last release is over two years ago.
