News and Announcements / Zentyal 4.0 Roadmap Published!
« on: July 22, 2014, 02:21:44 pm »
Zentyal Development Team is glad to announce the roadmap for Zentyal Server 4.0! Zentyal 4.0 is a new Community Edition, that will be published in October 2014 and with this release Zentyal's drop-in replacement for Microsoft® Exchange Server gets out of technology preview! Due to this, most of the development effort of the next months will focus on stabilization and improvement of the mail and mail-related directory features. Simultaneously, large effort will be put in establishing the necessary Quality Assurance procedures to guarantee the stability of Zentyal Server. The code freeze is expected on September 15th, 2014.

Besides focusing primarily on the improvement and consolidation of both OpenChange and Samba4 integration with the goal of providing a drop-in replacement for Microsoft® Exchange Server, some additional improvements will also take place. The L2TP module will be restructured and improved, migration from Zentyal Server 3.5 to 4.0 will be made as smooth as possible and the free configuration backup - the most popular feature of the Free Zentyal Account - will be made available directly through the Zentyal Server UI without having to register a Free Zentyal Account. This release will run on Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS.

In addition, the Zentyal Development Team has taken the decision to remove a number of modules in order to focus on Zentyal Server’s goal: Offer a drop-in replacement for Windows® Small Business Server and Microsoft® Exchange Server. The dropped modules are: IPS, UPS management (NUT), Backup (Duplicity), Monitor (together with the Zentyal Remote client), RADIUS, Webserver and Webmail (Roundcube), IPsec (replaced by a new module supporting only L2TP). Also the Free Zentyal Account will be discontinued. Documentation will be provided on configuring some of these services with specific software and naturally, community members interested in maintaining any of these modules will be warmly welcome.

The availability of the Zentyal 4.0 Daily Builds for testing will be announced shortly. We strongly encourage everybody interested in a drop-in replacement for Windows Small Business Server and Microsoft® Exchange Server to join the testing effort and submit bug reports and feedback as soon as possible, in order to make this the best Zentyal release ever!

News and Announcements / Zentyal 3.5 available
« on: July 01, 2014, 11:30:36 am »
Hi all,

The Zentyal Development Team proudly presents Zentyal 3.5, a new version of the Linux alternative to Windows Small Business Server and Microsoft Exchange Server.

This release focuses on stabilization and simplification of the architecture, highlighting the use of Samba as single LDAP server instead of synchronizing with OpenLDAP and the removal of other components.

This brand new version is available for download at:

http://www.zentyal.org/download

You can check out all the details in the official announcement:

http://wiki.zentyal.org/wiki/Zentyal_3.5_Announcement

We would like to thank the community and all early adopters involved in making 3.5 the best release ever. We wish you will have as much pleasure and satisfaction using this new release that we had working on it.

Hi Zentyal community,

OpenLDAP removal has taken a bit longer than initially expected but we were really committed in getting this into the 3.5 release, alongside with the switch to the new distribution base: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. We have therefore decided to postpone the release date until July 1st, to respect the code freeze period in our release policy and our QA time requirements.

We've also decided to move the usercorner and captiveportal to contrib, there wasn't enough time to adapt them properly to work with Samba4 instead of OpenLDAP and our main focus is to provide a native replacement of Windows Small Business Server + Exchange. The bwmonitor module will be also no longer officially maintained as it was mostly a dependency of captiveportal. This will definitely allow us to concentrate more effort in maintaining other more critical modules, but remember that any effort from the community wanting to keep maintaining these modules (or any other of the previously unmaintained ones) will be really welcome.

Remember also that removing OpenLDAP and having only Samba4 as a single LDAP server instead of having to keep 2 LDAPs in sync, will simplify a lot the Zentyal architecture and will for sure result in a better user experience. When we first announced this removal some people were confused thinking that Zentyal won't be LDAP compatible any more, but Samba4 also implements LDAP and there is nothing to worry here. What this means for the Zentyal users is basically less bugs :)

From now on, we encourage you to test a fresh install of the 3.5 daily build ISO  and start reporting any problem you encounter to ensure they are fixed before the final release. But please, remember that daily builds are in no way recommended for production environment, and upgrades from a previous 3.5 installation are also not guaranteed.

Hi all,

The roadmap for the next Zentyal Community Edition (3.5) has been published at: http://www.zentyal.org/roadmap/zentyal-3-5-roadmap/

This release will continue focusing on offering improved Microsoft Active Directory® and Microsoft® Exchange Server replacement. The main highlights are:
  • New distribution base: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
  • Remove synchronization with OpenLDAP, Samba4 as main directory service
  • Support for ActiveSync®
  • Support for Microsoft Outlook® 2010
  • Automatic Inbox refresh
Also, the following modules are going to be moved to the contrib section:
  • Zarafa
  • L7 Filter
  • FTP
Regarding the removal of OpenLDAP synchronization, the goal of Zentyal is to offer native replacement for Microsoft Active Directory and for this end, the only real choice is Samba4. Moreover, the decision is supported by the fact that OpenLDAP and Samba4 are very complicated to maintain simultaneously and having both for directory service is causing most of the directory issues.

As to Zarafa module removal, Zentyal aims at offering a native replacement for Microsoft Exchange and the only existing technology to achieve this is OpenChange. Zentyal was willing to continue shipping both OpenChange and Zarafa so that the users could choose, but after Zarafa BV decided to discontinue partnership with Zentyal S.L., it doesn't make any sense to continue shipping this component without the support of the official development team. On the other hand, OpenChange and Zarafa are incompatible systems and Zarafa's Community Edition limits the number of Outlook users to 3 users.

Regarding the removal of the L7 Filter module, this was motivated by the fact that the l7filter package is not being maintained by upstream and does not work properly (it causes false positives that have had impact in some deployments). On the other hand, FTP module was removed because the File Sharing functionality is already covered by Samba in a much more complete way than our limited FTP implementation.

These modules will continue being supported in the existing Zentyal Server versions until their end of life. Of course, community members interesting in maintaining them will be warmly welcome.

We will shortly announce the availability of the Zentyal 3.5 Daily Builds, allowing you to test them and give feedback as soon as possible. We'll let you know when you can join the testing effort.

Hi all,

To upgrade your Zentyal 3.3 Community Edition to 3.4 you only need to update your 3.3 first to get the new zentyal-core 3.3.8. After that, an upgrade button will appear on the dashboard.

Please take into account that this upgrade involves also a distribution upgrade (from Ubuntu 12.04 to 13.10), so it make take a bit longer depending on the packages you have installed and your internet connection.

Remember also that only one community edition is maintained at the same time, so the end of life of Zentyal 3.3 has been reached already.

Installation and Upgrades / Guest shares in Zentyal 3.0
« on: January 17, 2014, 12:38:55 am »
Hi Zentyal community,

We have just released zentyal-samba 3.0.23 and samba4 4.0.14-zentyal1 that fix some long suffered problems with guest access and GPOs but as an outcome of this fix we have a new restriction. From now on, guest access only works if the domain guest access is enabled. As there is no support for enable/disable accounts in 3.0 (as it is in 3.2 or newer versions), it must be done using the Windows RSAT or in the Zentyal shell with the following command:

Code: [Select]
sudo samba-tool user enable guest
So if you have some shares with the guest access active, your guest access will stop working until you activate the domain guest access.

Sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause you and don't hesitate to ask if you have any problem.
