Installation and Upgrades / Re: Zentyal 4.1 - GUI Domain Options
« on: March 30, 2015, 12:46:32 am »
There is no GPO UI in 4.1, that changelog entry was referring to a fix in the GPOs UI done after the 4.0 release, before removing it. But I've just edited the notes removing it to avoid confusion.

No, it's not a bug:

"Remove the limited GPO support from the Zentyal UI"

You can use the RSAT tools to manage GPOs.

News and Announcements / Zentyal 4.1 available!
« on: March 27, 2015, 11:38:47 am »
Hi all,

The Zentyal Development Team proudly presents Zentyal Server 4.1, a new release with native Microsoft® Exchange protocol implementation and Active Directory interoperability.

This release is completely focused on improving the stability and set of features delivered by the OpenChange module, based on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS to provide the latest stable packages.

Zentyal Server comes in two different flavors: development version, for bleeding edge testing of the latest available features and commercial version for stable production environments.

The Development edition of this new version is available for download at:

http://www.zentyal.org/download

You can check out all the details in the official announcement:

http://wiki.zentyal.org/wiki/Zentyal_4.1_Announcement

Looking forward your feedback and don't forget more updates and new features are coming among next weeks!

This was already fixed in zentyal-openchange 4.0.6, sorry for the inconvenience.

The documentation for getting started with zentyal development is fragmented and refers to older versions of zentyal (pre-4.0).
I've got a ubuntu 14.04 VM running with eclipse/EPIC for editing/debugging.
I've git clone zentyal main to my workspace.

what else do I need? any other dependencies? any CPAN modules needed or is everything included in the git src tree?

If you refer to the blog in the original post of the thread, yes, that's outdated, but the tutorial of the wiki (https://wiki.zentyal.org/wiki/Tutorial) to create a new module should work with 4.0, there are no recent changes in the framework, anyway let us know any problem you may find and we'll do our best to fix it. It's true that there is not too much documentation, but the existing one at least should work.

Cloning main from the master branch as workspace is perfectly ok, regarding the dependencies, we don't use any CPAN module, all our Perl dependencies are packaged for Ubuntu (as .deb), you can see the dependencies of each module in its debian/control file, but that means also they are not included in the git src tree, only the Zentyal code is there.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Webadmin Internal Server Error
« on: November 12, 2014, 01:11:26 pm »
I have found a work around for the moment, it's not the perfect solution.

1. Open the File "/usr/share/perl5/EBox/WebAdmin/PSGI.pm"
2. Go to the end of the File and remove the following part.

    if ($@) {
        throw EBox::Exceptions::Internal("Cannot load $pkgName: $@");
    }

3. Restart the Webadmin Service with "/etc/init.d/zentyal webadmin restart".

The modified file is in the attachment.

Removing that only hides the real error, it's not a proper fix.

Please we need the contents of /var/log/zentyal/zentyal.log (and probably also /var/log/zentyal/error.log) to see the real error in order to diagnose it and fix it.

This has to be some corner case because in all our tests the upgrades have been successful.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Help To Install Zentyal As Gateway
« on: October 17, 2014, 02:04:20 pm »
Zentyal 3.5 and older versions can act as a gateway. As of Zentyal 4.0 (currently in beta and release 29 oct) there will be no gateway module anymore.

This is not true at all. "Gateway module" has never existed (there was just a zentyal-gateway metapackage grouping some of the gateway-related modules) and yes, as now the number of modules is lower we no longer have that classification in metapackages, but for sure Zentyal 4.0 can act as a gateway, some modules like Captive Portal or IPS are missing but basic gateway functionality (Routing/Firewall/NAT) and even HTTP Proxy or Traffic Shaping are still there...

By the way, we are already documenting how to replace all that functionality not present in 4.0 ;)

Now that would be great!

There are some already, but more will appear here:

There isn't a webserver module, but apache can still be used to serve any page. Documentation to help users wanting to do that that will be provided, but in the meanwhile you can refer to the Ubuntu documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/serverguide/httpd.html

And of course you can also ask here in the forum if you have any doubt :)

Installed Zentyal 4.0, got it up and running.. Works fine.... BUT!

Can't believe that they actually dropped the backup, webserver and ups module while Jabber still exists... gotta be a joke right?
I really see no reason why I (or anyone else) should upgrade (or rather downgrade) to Zentyal 4.0.

No it's not a joke. Jabber is a potentially interesting module for a possible integration with the webmail (like gmail + hangouts), to offer a more complete groupware solution. The other modules you refer do not fit so well in our current focus, they are more for the previous "all in one" approach. We decided that there is no point in trying to do an "all in one" because there are lot of better specific alternatives and because the negative impact in the "Active Exchange" focus.

By the way, we are already documenting how to replace all that functionality not present in 4.0 ;)

If there is a "demand" we can start a thread of "Alternative setup solutions and configs " to compensate for the dropped modules.
And of course if the Zentyal guys do not mind starting such a thread.

It's perfect if community can document about alternatives to previous Zentyal functionality, anyway, as we've stated several times, there will be also documentation provided by the Zentyal team about that ;)

Zentyal made a working, full featured sbs solution available.

Now, it's been butchered and morphed into something new, an openchange gui it appears.

Please look at the list of modules availables on 4.0:

antivirus
ca
dhcp
dns
firewall
ha
l2tp
jabber
mail
mailfilter
network
ntp
objects
openchange
openvpn
printers
samba
services
software
squid
trafficshaping

Do you really think that's just "an OpenChange GUI"?

And remember that the Zentyal framework is still completely generic and extensible, nothing prevents to add other third-party modules on top.

It's just that as Stuart says in his above post, we can't get a rock solid product if we don't focus on a smaller set of modules officially maintained. This is about quality vs quantity, and for a server, I definitely choose quality.

Remember also that alternatives and documentation will be provided for the missing features.
