News and Announcements / New repository for unofficial packages
« on: November 08, 2010, 02:18:03 am »
Hi Zentyal community,

This is to introduce our new PPA for non-official or unmaintained packages:

https://launchpad.net/~zentyal/+archive/2.0-contrib/+packages

As you can see, egroupware is the first and currently only package there. As you may remember, we dropped its official support in favor of the new zarafa module and now it has been removed from our main repository.

The Installation Guide has been updated to reflect the new instructions to install the old ebox-egroupware package.

We also want to announce that if you want to contribute by developing any new module we will be very glad to publish it in this new contrib repository to make it easily available to the rest of the community. You can find more in our How to Contribute section.

Hi Zentyal users,

We've just made available the first version of Zentyal Desktop with roaming profiles. Currently it only has support for Ubuntu 10.04.

This version allows to have the users data synchronized with the server, so a user can work with the same data on different computers of the network, like in a Windows domain.

Note that this is still alpha software, we would be glad if you could help testing it and giving us some feedback.

Here you can find all the information about installation and configuration:

Hi Zentyal users,

As we have already mentioned, we've been working on Zentyal Desktop and we're now glad to announce the availability of the first alpha version!

Zentyal Desktop is an Ubuntu package intended to be installed on the desktop clients (workstations) of a network managed by Zentyal Server. It offers authentication against Zentyal LDAP and auto-configuration of desktop clients for the services provided by Zentyal.

Please note that this is still alpha software (it's the first version indeed), so it's not intended for production environments. There are some known issues with the software auto-configuration, but the authentication against the Zentyal Server LDAP should work. As many of the community members have been very interested in testing the Zentyal Desktop, we've decide to release this version.

This version is compatible with Zentyal Server 2.0 for Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 clients. We also plan to release a new version, compatible with Windows XP and 7 clients very soon.

Your help in testing it, giving us feedback, or even sending patches fixing stuff ;) would be really really appreciated. Here you can find all the information about installing and configuring Zentyal Desktop:

News and Announcements / New Zentyal 2.0-2 installer released
« on: October 19, 2010, 01:16:01 pm »
Hi Zentyal users,

The Zentyal Development Team has published a new compilation of all the latest Zentyal packages as well as the last system updates from Ubuntu.

As you may already know, our installer comes now in two flavours, for 32 and 64bit machines.

The new installer fixes a couple of issues:

- Automatic import of the PPA key to avoid the warning when executing apt-get update.
- Directly installs the latest available version of the core packages from our repository during the first stage, without need to upgrade them in the second one.

You can download both versions from our brand new Downloads page.

Remember that if you already have Zentyal installed, you can update to the lastest vesion of the packages without reinstalling it. Simply go to the Zentyal web interface / Software Management page and download the updates!

News and Announcements / Zentyal 2.0-rc2 released!
« on: August 27, 2010, 05:47:12 pm »
Hi Zentyal users,

The development team of Zentyal (formerly eBox Platform), the Linux small business server, is glad to announce the availability of a new 2.0-rc2 installer. This is going to be the last release candidate before the final 2.0 version.

There is an important change in the way you log into Zentyal on this new version: the installer doesn't ask you anymore for a password for the administration interface, now you can log in with the username and password asked before (the same you use to get root console).

A relevant addition has been also added: the first beta version of the new official Groupware module based on Zarafa. Give it a try and give us feedback!

Of course it also includes bugfixing, specially in LDAP and Traffic Shaping.

As we are approaching the release date (September 1st), your help in testing this release candidate and giving feedback is more important than ever. So, it's testing time! Any feedback and bug reports are really welcome!

You can download the new installer, as usual, from our Downloads page. If you already have installed a Zentyal 2.0-rc1 or eBox 1.5 you can also upgrade your packages to the latest versions available.

News and Announcements / Zentyal 2.0-rc1 released!
« on: August 23, 2010, 05:30:56 pm »
Hi future Zentyal users,

The development team of Zentyal, the Linux small business server, is glad to announce the availability of the first release with our brand new name. As you may already know, eBox Platform has now become Zentyal. And this is the first release candidate before the final 2.0 version.

Naturally the main visible change since the last eBox 1.5-1 installer is the rebranding associated with the new name, but there are also two other important changes. Firstly, we have switched from blackbox to lxde to provide a more friendly desktop environment for non-expert users. Secondly, as already announced, eGroupware is no longer maintained so we haven't included it in this installer. If you wish, you can still install it from the official repositories, but you should take into account that it will be replaced soon. As to other changes and improvements, this version of course also ships all the bugfixing that has been done since the last release.

As we are approaching the release date (September 1st), your help in testing this release candidate and giving feedback is more important than ever. So, it's testing time! Let the games begin - we're waiting for your feedback at the Forum :)!

You can download the new installer, as usual, from our Downloads page.

Hi eGroupware users,

I'm afraid I bring bad news for you. We are thinking about dropping ebox-egroupware as official module because the egroupware packages are no longer maintained by Ubuntu nor Debian. The current package of the latest version backported by us has known issues, some applications even don't work at all.

Of course, if any eGroupware expert would like to help us maintaining a working version of eGroupware for Ubuntu 10.04 we could change our mind without problem.

We are currently analizing other alternatives for our officially supported groupware solution.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any doubts about this. Any kind of feedback would be also welcome too.

Hi fellow eBox users,

The development team of eBox Platform, the Linux small business server, is glad to announce the availability of a new installer CD for the eBox Platform 1.5 series including the improvements and fixes that have been done since the first 1.5 installer. You can download the new installer, as usual, from our Downloads page.

eBox Platform 1.5-1 is a development version based on Ubuntu 10.04 and it will become eBox Platform 2.0 (next stable release) after a stabilization period. As you know, we have now finished with the development of new features and from now on we will focus all our attention (with your help!) on testing, bugfixing and optimizing the software.

The most relevant changes on this new 1.5-1 installer are focused on improving the performance:

- We have replaced the old configuration backend (gconf) with a brand new one based in redis. This improves the user experience in general, making the web interface more responsive. It also decreases the installation and boot times.
- The migration scripts of each package are now run on the same perl interpreter, this reduces the installation time of the packages.

This is an important change and we need your feedback to check that everything is right. There shouldn't be any problem on a fresh install, but if you upgrade from an older version with the configuration stored in gconf there may be issues in the migration process.

It also includes new versions of the following modules: Users, DHCP, Backup, Groupware, Firewall, IDS, Monitor, NTP, Software Management, HTTP Proxy and Webserver. They can be also updated via the Software Management module if you already have a installed 1.5 system.

Please remember that the 1.5 versions are beta and not intended for production environments. Having said that, we would appreciate greatly your help in testing this version and making the eBox 2.0 a great release!

Hi fellow eBox users,

We're sorry to announce that the eBox Platform 2.0 release will be delayed until September 1st. The decision was taken last Friday evening, after studying the different options and concluding that in order to release more stable version of the product, more time was needed for testing and improvements.

The first installer CD of eBox Platform 1.5 (beta version of eBox Platform 2.0) was released for testing and feedback on the 26th of July. As mentioned in the announcement, the development of eBox Platform 2.0 has now finished and the development team is now fully centered on testing and bugfixing the software. Moreover, during this stabilization period we are also dedicating time for optimizing the software to improve the performance and reduce the installation time. The aim of dedicating all August for these purposes is to guarantee that the next major release of eBox Platform will be the most stable release ever.

The whole eBox Platform team apologizes for having failed to announce properly this change until today and for not fulfilling the expectations of many eBox users and community members. As passionate for what we do, we sometimes rush forward and forget to explain ourselves. As people, we make mistakes. However, our intentions are the best: make a great, stable release.

We hope you'll stick with us the whole August: there will be improved beta versions and we'd be glad to count on your feedback!

News and Announcements / eBox 1.5 installer CD available!
« on: July 26, 2010, 01:57:17 am »
Hi fellow eBox users,

As many of you were expecting, we're now glad to announce the availability of the first installer CD for eBox Platform 1.5! You can download the new installer, as usual, from our Downloads page.

eBox Platform 1.5 is a development version based on Ubuntu 10.04 and it will become eBox Platform 2.0 (next stable release) after a stabilization period. We have now finished with the development and from now on we will focus all our attention (with your help!) on testing, bugfixing and optimizing the software.

These are the most relevant changes since eBox Platform 1.4 release:

- Improved software management: the ebox-software package acts now as a installer. It also eases the process of installing, updating or deleting packages.
- Autoconfiguration wizards integrated in the administration interface.
- New mode for network interfaces: bridged.
- Improved logs performance.
- Webserver with HTTPS support.
- New FTP module.

Please remember that 1.5 is a beta version and it is not intended for production environments. Having said that, we would appreciate greatly your help in testing this version and making the eBox 2.0 a great release!
