Hi Zentyal users,

The Zentyal Development Team has published a new compilation of all the latest stable Zentyal packages as well as the last system updates from Ubuntu.

As you may already know, the installer comes in two flavours, for 32 and 64bit machines. You can download both versions from the Downloads page.

The new installer comes with a new default partitioning layout to prevent fast filling of the root partition. Naturally you can still use the expert mode to define your custom partitions layout.

Remember that if you already have installed Zentyal server, you don't need this installer to update to the lastest vesion of the packages. Simply go to the Zentyal web interface / Software Management page and download the updates if you haven't done this yet.

Hi fellow Zentyal users,

We're glad to announce the availability of a new beta installer, Zentyal 2.1-2! Please note that this is the last beta version: from July to September we'll publish a series of release candidate versions and in September the next stable release (Zentyal 2.2), will see daylight.

This installer contains all the improvements and bugfixes done since the release of the previous beta installer (2.1-1 ), but it also comes with the first previews of three fully new modules: PPTP, Captive Portal and VM Management. Please note that these modules are still under development and they may be in alpha status. No need to say that the modules are not intended for production environments, but we wanted to make them available ASAP in order to start getting feedback from you.

You can download the new installer for 32 and 64 bit architectures from our Beta Downloads page. You can also install the 2.1 packages on an existing Ubuntu Server 10.04 following the instructions at our Installation Guide. Users who already have a 2.1 installation, don't need to use the installer, just make sure to upgrade to the latest versions of all the available packages.

A quick note about the VM Management module:

We have developed two different backends to manage VirtualBox and KVM. KVM is going to be the default option, but the development of the VirtualBox backend is more advanced. If you want to test it, just remove the libvirt package and install the virtualbox package (sudo apt-get remove libvirt-bin && sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose).

Please remember again that 2.1 is a beta version and it is not intended for production environments. As usual, if you have a spare testing server or a VM, you can help us a lot by reporting any problem you encounter or simply by giving any feedback or ideas. With your collaboration and help, we have no doubt that 2.2 will be the best Zentyal release ever!

Hi beta users!

We've just launched a new free cloud service (included in the Basic Subscription). You can now have a "yourserver.zentyal.me" domain pointing always to your dynamic IP address.

More info here:

http://www.zentyal.org/archives/2011/06/15/733-dynamic-dns-feature-available-for-subscribed-zentyal-servers-2-1-and-higher

Also, there is a new wizard in the installation process that will make much easier the process of getting a Basic account and subscribing your server.

These are Zentyal 2.2 features, but you can start testing them in Zentyal 2.1 and giving us some feedback right now!

Hi fellow Zentyal users,

We're glad to announce the availability of a new Zentyal 2.1-1 installer including all the current development improvements for 2.2 and the first beta of the new IPsec module.

Zentyal 2.1 is a development version based on Ubuntu 10.04.2 and it will become Zentyal 2.2 (next stable release) in September (2011). Until then we are going to frequently release new versions so you can help us testing the new features and improvements.

These are the most relevant changes included in this second beta:

- New IPsec module
- New Asterisk 1.8 integration
- New module selection page on the installer
- Allow to define IP ranges on objects
- Reorganization of menu entries
- Improved bug report system with automatic creation of tickets
- Lots of bugfixing and minor improvements

Please remember that 2.1 is a beta version and it is not intended for production environments. But if you have a spare testing server or a VM you can be one of the first users to test these changes and help us by reporting any problem you encounter or simply giving any feedback or ideas. There are less than two months of development left until the freeze period for Zentyal 2.2, so hurry up!

Hi Zentyal users,

If you are interested in having VoIP managed by Zentyal, here is a new reason to start helping us to test our current beta version (2.1), which will become stable with the release of Zentyal 2.2 in September.

A new zentyal-asterisk 2.1.1 package is available in our beta repository, it integrates Asterisk 1.8 and therefore solves most of the issues that were found with Asterisk 1.6 in Zentyal 2.0.

If you are already using Zentyal 2.1, you can upgrade just by using the Zentyal "Software Management" interface or executing "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install zentyal-asterisk".

For more details about the changes in this new version of the module, here is the full changelog:

+ New Phones section to configure phone lines instead of users between 4000 and 7999
+ Switched to Upstart to manage Asterisk daemon
+ Updated templates to Asterisk 1.8
+ Default Music on Hold path changed to /var/lib/asterisk/moh/
+ Added a script to transcode MP3 for Music on Hold
+ Added a script to generate a global addressbook
+ Deleted not used kernels script
    + Deleted unused templates
+ Moved from MeetMe to ConfBridge (rooms widget disabled but deleted dependency on DAHDI)
+ Dialplan now includes conferences and external calls don't need a 0 prefix
    + Deleted useless FirewallHelper
+ Disabled Zentyal VoIP provider configuration
+ Added configuration file to set up third party codecs
+ Moved from MeetMe to ConfBridge:
        * Rooms widget disabled has not supported by ConfBridge
        * Deleted dependency on DAHDI
        * Deleted not used kernels script
+ Dialplan and Queues are not longer in Realtime but files
    + Dialplan changes:
        * Dialplan now includes conferences
        * External calls doesn't need a 0 prefix but the full number
        * Voicemail now is always on *1
        * Music On Hold is always on *4
        * Echo test is always on *6

If you face any problem or want to send us any comment to improve the VoIP module don't hesitate to do it!

Zentyal Development Team is glad to announce that the development roadmap for the next stable Zentyal release (Zentyal 2.2) has now been published. Zentyal 2.2 will be a major release that will run on the latest Ubuntu LTS version (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx) and it will be released in September 2011. The first beta version (Zentyal 2.1) is already out and the first release candidates can be expected by the end of June.

Zentyal 2.2 will ship new features such as IPsec support, UPS management, VM management, Ad-blocker, integration with Kaspersky and Google Accounts and Administrator audit logging. Furthermore, in Zentyal 2.2 the configuration backend has been rewritten with the use of the new features that Redis 2.0 provides, it will include a new i18n system and it will offer faster and easier installer. Important general usability improvements will also take place, new wizards will be added as well as unified shares. You can find the detailed roadmap at trac and give any feedback on the roadmap in this forum.

As Zentyal Development Team's resources are limited, many features the community members and ourselves had hoped to include in this version had to be left out. However, we have decided to launch fundraising campaigns for four new features that Zentyal users have demanded and we have found interesting: Captive Portal, Thin Clients (LTSP Integration), Periodic tasks management (cron) and IPv6 support. If the campaigns succeed, more development resources will be assigned to include these new features in Zentyal 2.2!

Interested in these features? Visit the Fundraising page, donate and spread the word!

News and Announcements / Changes in the Zentyal translation system
« on: February 14, 2011, 12:37:35 pm »
Hi dear Zentyal translators and users,

As you might have noticed, the i18n system we have used until now had some issues that prevented some translated strings to appear properly on the interface. With the upcoming release of the first Zentyal 2.1 installer, we decided to make some improvements to tackle this issue.

Starting from today, we're glad to introduce you a new system that unifies all the strings on a single zentyal domain, instead of having separate domains for each module, therefore solving this issue. In addition, the new system avoids us having to translate the same string several times and we're able to provide a more uniform translation.

Another major change is that we have separated the translations from the source code and from now on we are going to provide separate packages for each language (language-pack-zentyal-XX, where XX is the country code). This allows us to publish translation updates more often, independently of the changes in the modules.

The drawback of the new system is that due to the unification of the strings, some strings are now marked as fuzzy. Therefore, we would be very pleased if you could log in to Zentyal translation site  and help us to review and update your language. We're sorry for the inconveniences, but we believe that this has been the best choice to assure high-quality translations.

News and Announcements / Zentyal 2.0 Virtual Machine images available!
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:08:50 am »
Hi Zentyal community members,

The Zentyal team is glad to announce the return of the VM images that were already available for eBox 1.4 and are now updated with the latest 2.0 packages.

You can download disk images for VirtualBox and VMware as usual and this time we also provide a disk image for KVM users.

We consider that VM images offer a quick and easy way to have your first experience with Zentyal without having to install it. All you need to do is just to create a Virtual Machine with your favorite virtualization tool and use the pre-installed Zentyal disk image.

To download the images or to get more information, please visit:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Download/VMImages

Please note that the VM images come with a reduced set of Zentyal modules. In reality Zentyal offers many more features and once you have created your VM, you simply need to enable them in the "Software Management" section.

As always, any feedback or suggestion about the images would be much appreciated!

Happy New Year!

News and Announcements / New Zentyal 2.0-3 installer available!
« on: December 22, 2010, 12:45:41 pm »
Hi Zentyal users,

The Zentyal Development Team is glad to announce that a new compilation of all the latest Zentyal packages as well as the last system updates from Ubuntu is now published!

Please note that this installer comes with a new Zentyal Cloud-based feature: you can see a new "Disaster Recovery" entry in the installer menu. This option allows users with a free Basic Server Subscription to automatically install the modules from a previously stored configuration backup and also to restore the configuration itself. Starting from  January, full Disaster Recovery functionality will be available for those with Professional and Enterprise subscriptions.

Another major change is the switch from slim to LXDM as display manager - we have opted for this change to avoid crashes of the graphic environment on some systems.

Remember that if you already have Zentyal 2.0 installed, you can update to the latest version without having to reinstall. Simply go to "Zentyal Components" page in the "Software Management" section and download the new packages! Alternatively, you can download the new installer at http://www.zentyal.org/downloads

The whole Zentyal Team wishes you happy holidays with this new release! We will be at the office, so if you can spare some of your time to test this new feature, it would definitely be the best gift you could ever make!

Hi Zentyal users,

A new revision of Zentyal Desktop is available. It adds roaming profiles support for Ubuntu 10.10 like the previous 0.3 version added for 10.04.

It also allows to authenticate with Zentyal servers in slave mode. Until now, it only worked with standalone or master servers. A fix in the software configuration is also included.

Note that this is still alpha software, we would be glad if you could help testing it and giving us some feedback.

Here you can find all the information about installation and configuration:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Document/Documentation/ZentyalDesktop/Ubuntu

Hi Zentyal users,

We are glad to announce the availability of the alpha version of  Zentyal Desktop for Windows XP and 7. It should work also in Vista although it hasn't been tested on it.

Zentyal Desktop provides auto-configuration of Windows clients for the services integrated in Zentyal Server. It is also a distribution of some of the most popular open source software packages for Windows (Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin and Ekiga). Of course the installation of these components is optional and you don't have to select them if you already have them installed.

Please note that this is still under development, so it's not intended for production environments.

Your help in testing it, giving us feedback, or even sending patches fixing stuff Wink would be really really appreciated. Here you can find all the information about installing and configuring Zentyal Desktop for Windows:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Document/Documentation/ZentyalDesktop/Windows
