News and Announcements / Zentyal 3.0 Virtual Machine images available!
« on: October 26, 2012, 02:10:27 pm »
Hi Zentyal community members,

We have uploaded new VM images including the latest Zentyal 3.0 packages.

You can download disk images for VirtualBox, VMware and KVM (qcow2 format) as usual.

We consider that VM images offer a quick and easy way to have your first experience with Zentyal without having to install it. All you need to do is just to create a Virtual Machine with your favorite virtualization tool and use the pre-installed Zentyal disk image instead of creating an empty disk.

To download the images or to get more information, please visit:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Download/VMImages

Please note that the VM images come with a reduced set of Zentyal modules. In reality Zentyal offers many more features and once you have created your VM, you simply need to enable them in the "Software Management" section.

As always, any feedback or suggestion about the images would be much appreciated!

News and Announcements / Zentyal 3.0-rc2 available for testing!
« on: September 07, 2012, 09:37:15 am »
Dear Zentyal users,

We're glad to announce that the second release candidate of Zentyal 3.0 is now available for download and testing! This version is based on the new Ubuntu 12.04.1 installer and besides all the bug fixing done since the first release candidate, it features a new Samba 4.0 beta8 and lots of additional improvements and polishing.

So, it's definitively time to download Zentyal 3.0-rc2, test it throughout and help ironing out the last flaws! You can download the new installer, as usual, from the Beta Downloads page: http://www.zentyal.org/beta/. Or if you already have installed Zentyal 3.0-rc1, simply upgrade your packages to the latest available versions (Software Management module) or with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

The release of the Zentyal 3.0 is almost here (next week!), so your help in finding bugs now is more important than ever to make Zentyal 3.0 the best release in the history! To liven up the bug hunt, we will reward the most active bug-reporters as well as the persons who report the trickiest bugs with Zentyal t-shirts!

Finally, remember that Zentyal 3.0-rc2 is a release candidate and it is not intended for production environments.

Happy testing!

Hi all!

The Zentyal Development Team is proud to announce that the 3.0-rc1 installer is now available for testing! This is the first release candidate for the 3.0 stable series: the next stable Zentyal server version, Zentyal 3.0, will be published on the 13th of September.

As the beta releases have ended, it means that this version comes already with all the Zentyal 3.0 features. From now on, all the focus will be on bugfixing (your help finding those bugs is crucial!), polishing details and also preparing the migration process from 2.2 to 3.0.

Regarding the changes since the last 2.3-2 release, we want to highlight the following:

* Brand new look & feel of the user interface!
* New samba module that integrates the beta5 version and allows Zentyal to join Windows Server domains!
* Some improvements in Zarafa, such as multi domain support and integration with Jabber

Moreover, a lot of bugfixing has been done too!

You can download the new installer, as usual, from the Beta Downloads page.

The easiest way to test this release candidate is to do a fresh installation of Zentyal 3.0-rc1 having Internet connection to make sure that the latest versions of the packages are downloaded. If you already have a Zentyal 2.3-2 installed, you can upgrade the full system to get these new versions using the Software Management module or with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade in command line.

And please, remember that Zentyal 3.0-rc1 is a release candidate and it is not intended for production environments.

So, let the games begin! The finder of the biggest bug will receive tons of glory and fame!

« on: July 26, 2012, 11:14:49 am »
Dear Zentyal users,

As you know already, the next stable Zentyal version (Zentyal 3.0) will be out this September, with many usability and performance improvements and cool new features such as Samba4, Kerberos, Thin Clients, UPS, new HTTP proxy module, etc. As new features get added, there are new strings to translate and therefore, it would be great if you joined the translation effort to make Zentyal 100% available also in your language!

Currently Zentyal has been started to translate to 36 different languages. Check if the translation to your language has already started and if not, ask the language project to get added by sending an email to the internationalization mailing list (http://lists.zentyal.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/zentyal-i18n). At the moment, the most translated languages are:

Spanish: 79%
Portuguese (Brazil): 79%
Lithuanian: 79%
Catalan: 75%
Russian: 74%
Hungarian: 68%
French: 63%
Italian: 59%
Portuguese: 58%
Norwegian Bokmål: 52%
German: 50%

To contribute to the translation, simply go to http://translate.zentyal.org/, register on-line and start translating! As you can see, the translation is done with a web-based tool that is very easy to use. If you have any doubts, you can check out this how-to on translating Zentyal to your language, ask in the Forum or send an e-mail to the internationalization mailing list.

Let’s make those percentages go up!!

Hi Zentyal community,

We are glad to let you know that Zentyal has already entered the feature freeze period for 3.0, meaning that from now on we will be focused on polishing and bugfixing until September. To celebrate this, we bring you a new installer including new versions of most of the packages. This means that in this release you can find almost all the functionality that will be present in the final Zentyal 3.0, but it's still a beta with lots of rough edges. We're looking forward to receiving your feedback & bug reports, to be able to release the first Zentyal 3.0 Release Candidate version in a few weeks.

You can download both 32 and 64 bit versions of Zentyal 2.3-2 at http://www.zentyal.org/beta/

Some of the highlights included in this new version are:
  • First version of the brand new HTTP proxy module, with a much simpler interface and improvements like now it is possible to apply different filter profiles on different time periods.
  • New features on Samba4, allowing to set administrator account or edit general settings without having to disable the module.
  • Several improvements in Firewall, OpenVPN and Captive Portal modules, featuring support for SNAT rules, MAC filtering and Captive Portal objects and services exceptions.
  • Jabber module now supports shared roster, vCards, STUN and Proxy configuration, and even integration with the Zarafa Webapp!
  • Changes are now saved in a dialog that disappears when the process has finished without redirecting the user to a different page. Also it blocks any action on the interface while saving the changes for safety reasons.
  • Support for confirmation dialogs at framework level that can be triggered with any action on the models.
  • Lots of other bugfixes and minor improvements!

In general, if you have already a working Zentyal 2.3 installation, you can try to upgrade, but it's always safer to do a fresh install. Take into account that specially the Proxy module has changed from top to bottom so you'll have to reconfigure it. Take also into account that this is a beta first version so you will find some problems, but, with your feedback, we hope to fix them all very soon.

And please, remember that Zentyal 2.3 is a beta release and it is not intended for production environments. Happy testing!

Hi Zentyal users,

Time has passed since we released the first version of our new zentyal-samba module based on Samba 4.0 alpha18, since then we have done some improvements to the module but even more important, the Samba 4 team has been also working hard releasing new versions with great improvements. Today, we release a new version that integrates Samba 4.0 beta2.

This is the summary of the more important changes since alpha 18:
  • Samba4 now integrates the good old Samba3 daemon for the file sharing and printing services, this will provide more stability in these features (new zentyal-printers module is not yet ready, but you can stay tuned because it should be really soon).
  • Integration with Logs module is now working
  • Recycle Bin feature has been added again
  • Guest shares are now working
  • Roaming profiles support has been also added
  • Allow to choose drive letter to map user home directories

The easiest way to test this is to do a fresh installation of Zentyal 2.3-1 having Internet connection to make sure the latest versions of the packages are downloaded. If you already have a Zentyal 2.3-1 installed, you can stil upgrade the full system to get these new versions using the Software Management module or with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade in command line.

Please take into account that this is not yet production-ready, you should use it only in testing environments. As usual, your feedback will be really appreciated!

We are glad to announce that the very first version of the UPS module is now available for testing! This brand new module, that will be included in the next stable Zentyal server release (Zentyal 3.0), will help to protect your server when unexpected power disruptions occur, by properly shutting down the system.

This first version of the UPS management module integrates the NUT daemon to monitor the UPS devices connected to the local system. It reads all the variables published by the UPS and allows to change its settings such as the low battery threshold, shutting down your system properly when an event is triggered.

Please note that this is the first version of the module and we're looking forward to your feedback to improve and complete it. So, gentlemen, it's time to install the module, configure it and pull the plug to see what happens. We're looking forward to receiving your reports! Oh, and did we mention that this is recommended for testing environments only ;)!

You should be able to install the module through the Software Management module on an existing 2.3-1 installation, or via commandline with sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install zentyal-nut. Once installed, you'll be able to access the UPS module configuration under the Maintenance --> UPS menu.

Happy testing!

Hi all Zentyal community members!

The development of next stable Zentyal release (Zentyal 3.0) goes on and we're very glad to announce a new milestone: a new Zentyal 2.3 installer is now available for testing! This installer features the first alpha version of Kerberos, Zarafa integration and a brand new core that should significantly improve the speed and responsiveness of the UI.

So, it's testing time! The new installer, for both 32- and 64-bit architectures, is available at the Beta Downloads page. If you prefer, you can also install the 2.3 packages on an existing Ubuntu Server 12.04 following the instructions on the Installation Guide. We can't wait to receive your feedback!

To sum up, the highlights of this new release are:
  • New core: the configuration backend and the model manager have been rewritten providing better configuration caching and on-demand loading of models. You should notice better performance and lower memory consumption.
  • First version of the Kerberos integration providing the Single Sign-On (SSO) feature, this will allow your users to access the network services introducing their username and password only once. Currently it's only implemented on HTTP Proxy and Mail.
  • Finally added the Zarafa module, featuring Zarafa 7.1 with its new web interface (classical one is also still available if you prefer it).
  • Renewed DHCP and Traffic Shaping GUIs to ease the configuration and management.

Please note that as the Zentyal internals have changed a lot, specially in the way the configuration is stored, it's not currently possible to upgrade from a previous Zentyal 2.3 installation. You should do a fresh install if you want to help us with the testing. Also, as these changes are important, be prepared to find some bugs, but we're waiting for your feedback to fix them asap!

In general, please remember that Zentyal 2.3 is a beta version and it is not intended for production environments. Zentyal 3.0, the next stable release, will be released in September 2012. Until then we are going to frequently release new versions so you can help us testing the new features and improvements.

Dear Zentyal users,

We've just released the new zentyal-ltsp module which provides Thin and Fat client functionality integrated with the DHCP module.

The current features allow the users to:

- Build and update Thin and Fat client images
- Install local applications
- Limit one session per user
- Create profiles to apply different configuration to the clients
- Enable/Disable network compression, local apps, local devices, autologin, guest login and sound
- Select keyboard layout
- Enter any other custom LTSP options
- Configure Per-client Autologin and Guest Login

To test this new module, just install a fresh Zentyal 2.3 making sure that you have Internet connection, in order to get the latest packages. If you already have an installed Zentyal 2.3, just upgrade to the latest version in the Software Management page and select the new 'Thin Clients' module. As usual, remember that Zentyal 2.3 is a beta release and it is not intended at all for production environments.

Any bug report or feedback will be really appreciated!

Additional notes:

- You will need to manually install a desktop environment in your server, for example for the default Ubuntu system you need to run:

  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop network-manager-

(Note that network-manager needs to be skipped to avoid conflicts with Zentyal.)

- If you want to test this with VirtualBox, you should know that the emulated Intel network cards doesn't seem to work well: use PCnet ones instead.

Dear all,

We're glad to let you know that updated VM images, based on the recently released Zentyal 2.2-2 installer, are now available! These include all the latest Zentyal 2.2 packages as well as system updates and some minor fixes.

Remember to spread the word!

Dear Zentyal users,

We've just released the new core (2.3.5) and users (2.3.3) packages: these implement the first version of the LDAP synchronization between Zentyal servers and make the new master-slave architecture available for testing!

We would like to highlight the following changes (compared to the master-slave functionality in Zentyal 2.2):

- LDAP-dependant modules allowed in the master
- Better slapd performance in slaves
- Easier slave configuration
- Better error management
- Slaves can also act as masters for other slaves

Please note that this is still under development, so you may find few glitches (e.g. you are allowed to add users on slaves), but we wanted to release these packages as soon as possible to start receiving your feedback.

To test this new master-slave architecture, simply install a fresh Zentyal 2.3, making sure you have Internet connection so you get the latest packages. If you already have a Zentyal 2.3 installed, you can also try upgrading to the latest version in the Software Management page, although on a development version like 2.3 flawless upgrade can't be guaranteed yet.

We're looking forward to receiving your feedback. Happy testing!

43
Hi Zentyal community,

We're glad to announce the availability of the first Zentyal 2.3 installer, featuring Samba4! You can download the new installer for 32- and 64-bit architectures from our Beta Downloads page. You can also install the 2.3 packages on an existing Ubuntu Server 12.04 following the instructions on our Installation Guide.

Zentyal 2.3 is a development version based on Ubuntu Server 12.04 beta and it will become Zentyal 3.0 (next stable release) in September 2012. Until then we are going to frequently release new versions so you can help us testing the new features and improvements.

The most relevant change since the release of the first Zentyal 2.3 packages is the Samba4 integration. Note that this is the first alpha version and some features are still missing, but we wanted to make it available for testing as soon as possible. Don't hesitate to report any problem you encounter!

In general, please remember that Zentyal 2.3 is a beta version and it is not intended for production environments. Having said that, we greatly appreciate your help in testing this version in order to make Zentyal 3.0 the best release ever!

News and Announcements / New Zentyal 2.2-2 installer available!
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:29:41 pm »
Hi Zentyal users,

We have now published a new compilation of packages including all the bugfixes and system updates from Ubuntu since the release of the previous 2.2-1 installer. Also, this new installer is based on the new Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, which was recently released (Feb 16), and will be the final revision of 10.04 (note that 12.04 is the next LTS on which Zentyal 3.0 will be based and it's coming next month).

This installer is also adapted to the new Firefox 10 which is shipped now replacing the old Firefox 3. Moreover, it fixes some installation problems when Internet connection is not available.

You can get the ISOs as usual from http://www.zentyal.org/downloads

Hope you enjoy it!

Hi guys,

Two good news: Zentyal 3.0 is cooking already, and your help is needed to make the best release ever! As you know, the single most important change in Zentyal 3.0 is the upgrade from Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS (Lucid) to Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS (Precise) and to make this change as smooth as possible, we need your help.

What can you do? Well, we've released the first Zentyal alpha packages (not recommended for production environments) that need testing. Check this link for further information and how to test the packages on already installed Ubuntu Server 12.04:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Document/Announcement/2.3

We hope to offer you a Zentyal installer soon, but in the meanwhile, if you want to help in the beta testing you can get a current Ubuntu Server 12.04 installer at:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily/current/

Furthermore, we're also trying to push these packages to the official Ubuntu universe repository to replace the current Zentyal 2.0 packages.

Please let us know if encounter any problems or need any additional instructions. Your feedback is much appreciated!
