Installation and Upgrades / Aibox SOHO?
« on: December 27, 2011, 05:32:06 pm »
browsing the web on my ever quest for the perfect SOHO setup, i came across a pdf file mentioning the Aibox SOHO, apearantly its a server, sold by a company that apears to be a Silver partner. (Aitire: http://www.aitire.es/ )
Does anyone have a clue what the current status is? sadly enough, i dont speak spanish!

Regards,

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Limiting user access to one folder

The general idea is that they rsync the website, where the server "requests" the data, so no pushing from our server..
but since it also contains company sensitive data, i want to limit their access..

i'm gonna look into the suggested solutions, tnx both!

Installation and Upgrades / Limiting user access to one folder
« on: December 17, 2011, 01:28:26 am »
Hello All.

For one of my clients i need to figure out a way to allow their webdesign company to only have access to /var/www
preferably, i dont want them to have read access anywhere else on the system.

Now, i know how to add a user by commandline, and change the home dir, what happens if i manually add a user, without the zentyal dashboard?
Will it break anything?

and if i have this user created, is there a way to allow them access to one folder, and one folder only? nowhere else read-rights required?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Server Backup and Fail over discussion
« on: December 17, 2011, 01:10:38 am »
There is always the case of buying two (or more) identical servers, where one could take over in case the other one fails.

For myself, i work for small company's, where downtime, if limited, is not a problem.
So, i do my backups to external servers offsite, and basicly thats it.
i always keep a Zentyal rescuedisk at hand so i can pull back the backups easily.

At this moment there is one thing that concerns me though.
one of my clients has Gigs of data, and its gonna backup over the network.. im not sure if i like that.

I'll monitor this topic closely, its a verry interesting discussion, and i'd like to learn from others :)

Jan Jacobs,

Thank you for your quick reply.

1.  Thanks for the skel reference.  I would never have stumbled across that.

2.  Currently (pre-Zentyal) I have NFS running already with a directory shared to all of our 150 students (who all log in as "student" on one of 40 computers).   So I can imagine how to set up a network share (manually, and labor intensively) to give each student a unique name, and have each student's home to be on the server (150 lines each in server export and client fstab).  Using Zentyal with roaming profiles enabled, doesn't this already happen as users are added?

And if it does, any idea why each client ends up with a local /home for each user account?  Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated.

sorry for my late reply, i was away on a much needed break.

Zentyal creates a /home dir on the "client" because thats how linux works..
normally, you logon to the workstation you work on, and the system assumes there's a /home dir on that system, if not, it creates it, copies a skeleton profile, et voila, i think that is because /home is essential for linux to operate perfectly.

what you can do, is NFS a /home, that way, the system finds /home and uses your server share to enable the user's home dir.
or, you can try and find a sync tool that syncs the /home dir upon logon.

The first has the advantage that you only need one /home, and is much as the windows  version of it, however.. if you are for some reason not connected to the network, you'll be creating a /home on the system, and use that.. not exactly a great deal on a laptop.

the seccond one has the advantage that, wether you are on or offline, your profile is in sync. or syncs when you re-connect.
this is basicly What Windows does, but it also mean you have a /home/<username> on every system you logon to..

or, if you can script/program that takes the best of both worlds..

create and sync a /home dir upon logon, and sync and delete that /home dir upon logout..

for the first question:
modify /etc/skel to your liking, this is where all the profiles get setup from, its a template for a user's home dir

seccond question:
you can install NFS and have /home on a network share, that way, all the user's home folders can reside on a single server.

« on: September 10, 2011, 01:40:21 pm »
