News and Announcements / Zentyal 3.3 available!
« on: December 16, 2013, 06:05:03 am »
Hello,

The Zentyal Development Team proudly presents Zentyal 3.3, a new version of the Linux alternative to Windows Small Business Server and Microsoft Exchange Server.

The most significant benefit introduced by this Zentyal Server release is the option to configure Zentyal as a native Microsoft Exchange replacement. Thanks to the OpenChange integration, it is possible to configure Zentyal Server as an on-premise Microsoft Exchange Server replacement with only two clicks and assign users the most common Microsoft Exchange services just as easily. Users can access these services through a web interface, or continue to use Microsoft Outlook clients as usual without having to install any additional software or plug-in on their computers.

In addition, Zentyal 3.3 supports Autodiscovery and offers Virtual Domain hosting. It also offers compatibility with Microsoft Outlook 2003 and preliminary access to calendars, contacts, mail and calendar via webmail. Since Zentyal offers a native implementation of Microsoft Exchange, users can not distinguish if their Microsoft Outlook client is using Microsoft Exchange Server or Zentyal, making migrations to Zentyal fully transparent and hassle-free for the users.

This brand new version is available for download at:

You can check out all the details in the official announcement:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Document/Announcement/3.3

Our documentation team is working on the official documentation to make it available as soon as possible. In the meanwhile, please consult these articles and the Zentyal Forum:

Hello,

The Zentyal Development Team proudly presents Zentyal 3.2, a new stable version the Linux small business server!

Zentyal Server 3.2 offers greater Samba integration, featuring support for Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and Organizational Units (OUs) in the Samba, Proxy, Mail and Zarafa modules. It also comes with improved security guaranteeing safe mobile communications due to the integration of L2TP support in the IPsec module and new Intrusion Prevention module based on Suricata.

In addition, significant usability improvements - such as migration from JavaScript Prototype framework to jQuery, Single Click Support to enable modules and dependencies, Headless mode, etc. - have taken place as well, making Zentyal Server GUI much faster and easier to use. Moreover, the upgrade from an existing Zentyal 3.0 installation is very easy and only requires a few commands to be executed.

The Zentyal Development Team is proud to announce that the second and last Zentyal Server 3.2 release candidate (Zentyal 3.2-rc2) is now available for download! The next stable Zentyal Server version, Zentyal 3.2, will be published on the 19th of September.

This new release candidate is now shipping new migration code to ease upgrades from Zentyal 3.0 installations and several bug fixes and correction introduced since last RC1.

We are now very close to the official release date and we would like to ask you to participate to this ultimate test sprint. To join the effort and test this version, start with a fresh installation of Zentyal 3.2-rc2 with Internet connection to make sure that the latest versions of the packages have been downloaded.

If you already have a Zentyal 3.1-rc1 installed, you can upgrade the full system by using the Software Management module or with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade in command line.

If you want to test the upgrade from a Zentyal 3.0 installation, just do the following:

Code: [Select]
sudo sed -i 's|zentyal/3.0|zentyal/3.1|g' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Please remember this release candidate is not yet intended to be used for production purposes and should only be tested in a non critical environment. We are really looking for your feedback!

Hi Zentyal 2.2 users,

We know that many of you were expecting a way to migrate your configuration from a Zentyal 2.2 to the new Zentyal 3.0 server and we're glad to let you know that a migration guide has now been published!

It is important note that due to the mayor changes introduced in Zentyal 3.0 (new distribution base, Kerberos, deep changes in some modules like HTTP Proxy, etc.), migrating everything is not possible. However, the migration guide provides some helpers to ease the migration process and helps to avoid manual configuration from the scratch.

You can find all the information at:

http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community/Migrate_2.2_to_3.0

If you are missing some specific information, please do request it through the Forum and we'll do our best to include it. When additional migration information is available, it will be documented on this same page.

We hope you will soon enjoy your new Zentyal 3.0!

News and Announcements / New Zentyal 3.0-1 installer available!
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:55:03 am »
Hi Zentyal users,

We are glad to let you know that a new Zentyal 3.0-1 installer is now available! This installer includes a new compilation of packages with all the bugfixes and Ubuntu system updates since the release of the first 3.0 installer.

Moreover, we would like to highlight the following:
  • This installer already includes the final Samba 4.0.0 package. Please read the current status of Samba4 in Zentyal server 3.0 here.
  • It comes with improved UTF-8 support. This is specially useful for those who are not using Zentyal in English. Please note that if you are already experiencing issues with UTF-8, upgrading may not be enough and probably you need to reinstall the server in order to fix them.
  • This installer also allows to introduce your Zentyal account credentials since the beginning of the installation to automatically register your server.
You can download the ISOs as usual from our Downloads page.

If you already have Zentyal 3.0 installed and you are not affected by UTF-8 issues, you can simply upgrade your server through the web interface (Software Management module) or with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

News and Announcements / Status of the Samba 4.0 integration in Zentyal 3.0
« on: December 13, 2012, 10:37:19 am »
As you may already know, when we started the Zentyal 2.3 development, we took the decision of integrating Samba4, which was about to enter the beta phase. This sounded risky and was questioned by some, but as we have the ambitious goal of being a full Active Directory replacement, and improve the migration processes from Windows server environments we decided to go for Samba4 integration and we do not regret it.

During the whole year Samba4 has been evolving really fast and we were confident that at some point around the release date of Zentyal 3.0, or not too late, there would be a final Samba 4.0 stable version solving the problems of the first beta versions. We can also say that during this development we have tried to contribute as much as possible with the Samba team, by giving feedback, coding and sending patches.

The thing is that Samba 4.0 stable has been released already and sadly, as you can see in the official announcement, it has been released still with known issues that affect some scenarios that Zentyal aims to provide.

So, how to solve this situation in these scenarios? To start with, we have written a brief list of the current known issues. In the next days we are going to detail them, provide as much documentation as possible about the different scenarios, what works and what doesn’t, and what can be done, including best practices for deployments. The documentation will be ready during next week. We also plan to implement more checks in the Zentyal Samba module to avoid common configuration mistakes, and add the possibility to recover from them, for example, allowing easy reconfiguration if Samba has been provisioned with a wrong domain name.

We can assure you that we will keep working hard making Zentyal a full Active Directory replacement and you should expect clear information about the current issues and the updates on the zentyal-samba packages.

Thanks for using Zentyal and keep the feedback coming so that we can all make it the best Linux alternative to Windows Server!

Update: More detailed documentation about some Zentyal scenarios with Samba4 can be now found at http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community/Development/SambaScenario

News and Announcements / Zentyal code moved to GitHub!
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:27:18 am »
Hi all,

We think this is good news for everyone. GitHub, the popular web-based hosting service contains now the official GIT repository for Zentyal. We already had some mirror there in the past, but lately it was outdated, and as you may know, the official repository was maintained by us at git.zentyal.org.

Now you can access to the Zentyal GitHub project at http://code.zentyal.org

The main reason for this change is to encourage and ease community contributions (third party modules or any other change or improvement in the core modules). With GitHub working on the Zentyal repo is just a click away, and you can do a pull request to see your code merged into the Zentyal master :)

We want to thank all the people who have already contributed with code. Remember that if you want your code to be included you have to sign the Contributor Agreement, more info at http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Contribute/Agreement.

Finally, we've taken advantage of this migration to fix some past history of the project which got lost during the migration from SVN about a year ago. So please, if you have already cloned the Zentyal code from git.zentyal.org, you need to clone it again from git://github.com/Zentyal/zentyal.git or from your own fork in GitHub!

News and Announcements / Tentative Zentyal 3.2 Roadmap Published!
« on: November 06, 2012, 03:37:48 pm »
Zentyal Development Team is glad to announce that the tentative Zentyal 3.2 roadmap has now been published. As disclosed during the Zentyal Summit 2012, the main development lines for Zentyal 3.2 will be:
  • IPv6 support
  • Zentyal Desktop for Ubuntu with Single Sign-On and autoconfiguration of clients
  • Usability improvements and interface review
And if you are saying "What? What about all the other ideas?" Well, you can decide! A new platform at http://ideas.zentyal.org has been set up to make it easier to submit, vote and track ideas. All the current ideas in the trac wishlist, tickets and forum posts will be progressively taken here to have only one, single idea pool.

Naturally, due to limited resources, not all the ideas can come true. However, the most popular and doable ideas will get included in the Zentyal 3.2 Roadmap. Initially, there is no deadline for submitting ideas: you might propose an excellent idea a month before the freeze, get lots of votes and if it takes little development time, get it still included. However, if you are thinking about something that takes lots of development time, you better propose the idea as soon as possible.
