Installation and Upgrades / UPS module on Zentyal 2.x
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:21:58 pm »
Hi

Has anyone done it or has anyone an idea how to install Zentyal 3.0's UPS module on a Zentyal 2.2.9?
I know how to install apcupsd on a Zentyal Server but I'd like to (fully) integrate my UPS into Zentyal (and can't change to V3 at the moment).

Thanks for any suggestions,
Peter

Hi Escorpoim

I *solved* the problem.

While checking out whether «aptitude remove linux-image-2.6.32-42-generic-pae» is correct to get rid of old kernels I found on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/RemoveOldKernels/Problems
that «apt-get install linux-image» is a viable way to install the linux kernel (whatever "the" linux kernel might be). The web page gave me some good information what to do in case all kernels are gone (and therefore some confidence...).

«apt-get install linux-image» really installed the long awaited 2.6.32-45 kernel and after a reboot I seemed to be happy - seemed to be...
The iptables problem still existed - Grrrrrr
Then I fired up Zentyal's Web GUI and suddenly there where updates to do. After having done all the system updates and the Zentyal updates and another reboot: *everything* *is* *fine*

Thanks a lot for your support even though you couldn't give me the final solution - but you were some sort of backup and inspiration - great.

CU, Peter

Hi Escorpiom

As this is a productive machine I'll have to do this very carefully...

So, let me ask you a couple of questions:
1a. The <root partition> in the line "mount /dev/< root partition> /mnt/temp" the first possible solution refers to "sda1" (that is mounted to /boot), right?
1b. All the kernel files that are needed and used to run a linux machine are (only) in /boot?

2a. As my server boots and I can easly boot it with an older kernel (say 2.6.32-41) can I simply boot that older kernel, remove the latest available kernel (here 2.6.32-42) an try an update with «sudo apt-get update -> sudo update-grub -> sudo apt-get upgrade»?
2b. Am I right that removing a  kernel works with «aptitude remove linux-image-2.6.32-42-generic-pae»?

Answers very much appreciated...

Peter

Hi Escorpiom

I retried «sudo apt-get update -> sudo update-grub -> sudo apt-get upgrade» again but it didn't help as you can see in the output:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-45-generic-pae

There was /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-45-generic-pae available (but with 3MB a lot smaller than the other initrd.img files with about 8MB) But there were no other kernel files.
Even after a reboot Zentyal was still running on 2.6.32-42. Grrrrrrr

Then I checked /boot again and what did I see: all kernel files of 2.6.32-43 up to 2.6.32-45 were there and all the old ones had vanished. So I repeated «sudo apt-get update -> sudo update-grub -> sudo apt-get upgrade» and the grub output looked very promising.
A short reboot (at a heartbeat of 180) and Zentyal was
- still running on 2.6.32-42
- the old kernel files were back in place at /boot
- the new kernel files (2.6.32-43 and up) had disapeared.
What is going on here!!

Then I carefully went through all the steps again. The "lone" /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-45-generic-pae showed up again but neither the other kernel files of 2.6.32-45 nor the kernels 2.6.32-43 and 2.6.32-44. What a frustration.

Next I made an «updatedb» to do a «locate 2.6.32-45». I found tons of files in "/lib/firmware/2.6.32-45-generic-pae", "/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-45" and some in "var/lib/dpkg/info".
In "/usr/src" I find two directories: "linux-headers-2.6.32-45" and "linux-headers-2.6.32-45-generic-pae". I all looks so promising but why on earth don't I get the kernels files into "/boot"?

Then I copied away all the 2.6.32-45 files I could find on my server and restarted the web interface. System update told me that there were no updates to install, even after an «Update list».
Then I rebooted Zentyal but the system update in the web interface still reported that there was nothing to update.

So I retried «sudo apt-get update -> sudo update-grub -> sudo apt-get upgrade» again - didn't help a bit.
And so a last try I fired up «sudo apt-get install --reinstall initramfs-tools» once again with the result that this time there was a "initrd.img-2.6.32-44-generic-pae" created in /boot (maybe/probably because I copied all the 2.6.32-45 stuff away).

I am absolutely helpless and quite a bit frustrated.

Any idea what to do?

CU

BTW: should I set /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf back to "MODULES=most"?

And a little addendum: I just saw that there a are (broken) slinks in /
"initrd.img" -> /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-45-generic-pae (which is not there)
"vmlinuz" -> /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-45-generic-pae (which is not there either)
and the "old" versions of them pointing to the 2.6.32-44 kernel files
So these kernels must have been in place once but they are gone...
How can I rebuild them???

Hi Escorpiom

I can't access my Zentyal at the moment. But to make sure that I understand what you mean: "Zentyal box" is the Web GUI, right?

I think the firewall rules are in place. In /var/log/zentyal/zentyal.log is a (very) long list of firewall rules and there's no hint of a problem listed there (as I remember).

What do you think about the last few lines in /var/log/zentyal/zentyal.log (see the bold one)
--------------------8<--------------------

Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
...
--------------------8<--------------------
and the non existing "2.6.32-42-generic-pae" in /lib/modules?

I think I should have kernel 2.6.32-45 and the system thinks it is on kernel 2.6.32-45 but it boots 2.6.32-42. Unfortunately there are only the kernels up to 2.6.32-42 in /boot but not the 2.6.32-43 up to 2.6.32-45. Am I right and if so, how can I force to install 2.6.32-45?

Thanks for helping
Peter

Hi

I'm running a Zentyal 2.2 and keep it updated (by GUI and after facing the problem also with "apt-get update"/"apt-get upgrade").
On Dec, 7th I had to shut down the server due to works to be done on the electrical power inhouse. After restarting I could not get to the internet from LAN (the config: internet<--->Zentyal<--->LAN). Zentyal has access to the internet.

uname -a says:

For me it seems like kernels 2.6.32-43 to 2.6.32-45 were installed.
But they don't appear in grub's list and the are not in /boot (only 2.6.32-34 up to 2.6.32-42).

I can't remove an old kernel with "apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.32-34-generic". I get a message like "package not installed and therefore nothing to remove".

Please help

BTW: my bluetooth dongle isn't found with "hcitool scan" anymore, too. It returns "Device is not available: Address family not supported by protocol"

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Backup Tool reports an error
« on: March 25, 2012, 10:25:29 pm »
No way to do that.
My Zentyal Server is "a bit old" - I run it since 2.2 came out and I really can't remember when and most interessting of all why or after what action of mine the weird error message began to show up.

So my question is: why this "Use of uninitialized value $value"?

Installation and Upgrades / Backup Tool reports an error
« on: March 24, 2012, 09:31:06 am »
Hi out there

I daily get an error message (at 4 am - can't find an according cronjob though) that says:
"Use of uninitialized value $value in concatenation (.) or string at /usr/share/perl5/EBox/RemoteServices.pm line 1861."

Line 1861 in RemoteServices.pm reads: $stringConf .= "$entry,$type,$value\n";
And here is the complete sub with the trouble making line of code:
Code: [Select]
sub _statusKeysAndValuesString
{
    my ($self) = @_;
    my $stringConf;

    my $type = 'string';
    my @dirsToLook = ('');
    while (@dirsToLook) {
        my $dir = shift @dirsToLook;
        push @dirsToLook, $self->st_all_dirs($dir);

        my @entries = @{   $self->st_all_entries($dir) };
        foreach my $entry (@entries) {
            my $value = $self->st_get_string($entry);
            $stringConf .= "$entry,$type,$value\n";       /* <-- this is THE line of trouble */
        }
    }

    return $stringConf;
}

Any idea what's going wrong and how it can be fixed?

News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal 2.2 released!

I hardly can wait to use the improvements but I don't want to reinstall my server.
So, any idea when a migration tool 2.0->2.2 will be available?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Low power consumption Zentyal
« on: July 20, 2011, 09:58:50 pm »
Helllo

I run Zentyal on an old Compaq SFF Desktop:
- Pentium III - 800 MHz
- 512 MB RAM
- 2 x 1.5 TB - WD Caviar Green
- 1 additional SATA-controller
- 1 additional PCI-NIC RTL 8139
- FD- and CD-drives removed

These modules are installed and running:
Network
Firewall
DHCP
DNS
Backup
Events
IDS
Logs
Monitor
NTP
VPN
Users and Groups
FTP
File Sharing
HTTP Proxy
User Corner
Printer Sharing

With
- 2 of 5 users online at the moment, there is a system load of: 0.26, 0.42, 0.35
- one of the HDs sleeping (as it's only a backup HD)
the power consuption is 50W.

The system ist working fine except the very slow responding zentyal webinterface.

Installation and Upgrades / How can I read sysadms mails?
« on: March 13, 2011, 12:41:05 pm »
There are a lot of interesting mails in /var/mail/sysadm.
I'd like to read them with a standard mail program (i.e. Thunderbird) from a client computer in the network. I tried several parameters (protocol, server name, port, authentication...) to access the mailbox but didn't succeed.
Can anyone help?

I just created the ticket #2708
You get there by: http://trac.zentyal.org/ticket/2708
Let's see what happens.

13
1st of all: Thanks to Escorpiom - nice work and good support

2nd: Hey, Zentyal stuff, where are you? If Escorpiom is right (and I exactly experience the same problem) this is a timebomb. So, please help to overcome the problem - setting up the server is not a handsome solution.

@Escorpiom: where are those squid files. I only found a couple of small log files in /var/log/squid.

Hi Joe

I found if I rotate the logs more aggressively so they are not so large it does help with caching and memory usage and improves system performance on my system. May not be relevant to everyone though but its something to tweak at least a little to squeeze some performance out.

I do see allot of errors in various logs causing some of them to creep up over 2 megs in size (over 10 in some cases) before rotation and have another forum post about them to which no response had been posted yet. Maybe you can take a look at these too?

How can these log be rotated more aggressively?

Thanks for help, Peter

Hi zolf

That
Quote
cd /var/log
rm -rf *
was probabely not a very good idea. You lost all your log files.

But I'm "a bit confused" too, that this problem occurs at all and that no Zentyal staff helps.
