Other modules / Newbies in a World of Hurt!

Hello Everyone!
Okay, this is something I've never done before and have no experience whatsoever in firewalls, networking etc. We were hacked recently and I got triggered in wanting to setup better home internet security.
> We have a Server with Xeon - we've installed Zentyal
> We also have a provider which is DHCP, which I've looked up, seems like we should be able to do two different things
1) put the modem directly into firewall and push it through where the router is inside the firewall
2) Have the VPN on the outside of firewall.
However, we're having a hard time configuring it properly (and end up wanting to strangle each other
). Also, we do have an older router that we can use if needed for outside the firewall, although not ideal. Any help would be great. And again, total newbies to this.
As a side note, would it be doable to also use it as a server just lightly, so I can host my own site instead of paying every month for it?

We're newbies to this whole thing. If we had to restart the configuration, how would we go about that? Also, are there specific instructions? We followed a video for 4.2, but some things were different.
