Installation and Upgrades / Re: Logs issue
« on: March 04, 2011, 08:07:21 am »
Hi Escorpiom,
Maybe, on the paid version of Zentyal, the Dashboard is different, eh? The one we have been playing all this time is the free version, yes?
Anyway, as my logging issue has becoming a habitual by now, so I will close this thread. I have open new thread here:

One more thing I notice this morning, as the logs module is again stopped, I noticed that all the ebox.log rotated everyday is at 7.35am. Any relation perhaps with my logs stopping issue?

Installation and Upgrades / Logs Module Issue on Zentyal 2.0-3 installed from ISO
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:55:22 am »
Alright, it's really already becoming a habit for about a week by now. Every 7:30 something, the logs will stop logging. The module "logs" needs to be restarted manually, i.e. Click "restart" from Dashboard to make it functioning again.
All activities log between the time it dies and being resurrected, are lost in space, i.e. not logged. Oh, except squid's which are saved on it's access.log.
/dev/mapper home and root are not full.
Anywhere else to check? /var/log/ebox/ebox.log? What to look for?

Hi Escorpiom,
Ah, yes I see. I don't use filtering on my Proxy settings, so dans is off for my case I guess. At the moment, I'm not planning to use it anyway.
As for monitoring the proxy logs, at the moment I'm experimenting with lightsquid. An add-on, as the similar tool is not provided by Zentyal:
http://lightsquid.sourceforge.net/
Here is the installation steps as recommended by Arun (read the conversation at near end of discussion):
http://forum.zentyal.org/index.php?topic=6006.msg24984#msg24984
Perhaps now I understand better why people on their post everywhere suggest to link to dans's log instead of squid's, simply because the recorded entries on squid are all localhost as what you have explained earlier.
As for the logs, I don't know why they are always off at around 7am-8am every morning (been monitoring this past three days for sure). Is this Zentyal issue, or Ubuntu issue, it's still not clear.
I usually restart all the modules from the Dashboard, that should revive the logs. Now I use VPN to restart them every morning from my home. It helps me for this time at least. But to really do this everyday...?
Really, are we the only two unfortunates in this forum that experiencing on-off logs issue?

Well Escorpiom, as for my Zentyal, it's becoming a habit already by now. Every morning around 7.30-8.00am, The Logs Web User Interface would report nothing, but actually there are lots of activities happening on the background.
BTW, how do you enable Dansguardian? I only turn on HTTP Proxy, does that automatically turns on Dansguardian?
And how do you monitor your traffic anyway?

Additional note:
This morning, it's happening again. But this time I found faster way to overcome it, that is by restarting the logs module on the dashboard.
Is this the normal way Zentyal works that modules need to be restarted everyday, or a certain period of time?

Installation and Upgrades / Logs issue [SOLVED]
« on: February 20, 2011, 06:41:27 am »
Why is it sometimes the logs ie. Firewall, DHCP, Events, VPN, Proxy) seems to be not functioning. It's just not showing any new updates while actually there are lots of activities behind (around the network), until it needs to be disabled, and then re-enabled on the configure log menu?
If to check squid activities is by accessing the /var/log/squid/access.log, how is it the proper way to monitor dhcp leasing function, or what file is needed to be access to see dhcp lease log directly, bypassing the log function within the web admin interface.
Hopefully, the answer is not simply because this Zentyal version is not stable.
Notes:
* Those logs are configured to be kept as long as 90 days.
* Squid and all those functions were found to be keep functioning in the background, which means, people still can get IP leases, do internet browsing or emailing. Only the logs stop updating.
* Running tail -f /var/log/squid/access.log showing that squid are doing its job fine. Meaning, records keep updating.
* Zentyal is version 2.0-3 and Ubuntu is of course 10.04 (installed from the Zentyal ISO)

Hi Arun,
Thank your for providing the steps. As you have mentioned it earlier, that the steps you provided is largely taken from Lightsquid documentation, I have tried following the steps but I'm stuck until step 5.
Below is the list of the steps I have done and their notes:
Step 1: As for perl, squid, and cron, I think they're all there. While "http server", ie. Apache, I have to think and pause a bit here. Zentyal, mine is version 2.0-3, comes with a web-based administration interface, so there must be a web server already installed and setup. I tried to access http://localhost and it replied "It works".
Step 2: Download is fine, no problem.
Step 3: However, upon looking the folder "/var/www/htdocs/", it's just not there. So I tried to install the module "Web Server", as it was not initially installed, because I did not plan to use this machine as a web server, only gateway and infrastucture. After that I turned on the module, setup the configuration as follow:
Listening port = 80
Listening SSL port = disabled
Enable per user public_html = unchecked (unticked)
Virtual Host = Not setting up any
Then saved the changes.
I thought by now I should have the folder "/var/www/htdocs/", but it's still not there yet.
I browse trough the forum, and found a dicussion mentioning that the document root is "/var/www" without the "htdocs". So I thought maybe this is the one, and extracted the "lightsquid-1.8.tgz" there.
Step 4: Done. All are fine.
Step 5: Change owner to where apache = httpd user. I don't understand this. How do I identify any httpd user? What is the meaning of this?
Summary:
1. Now I have the "Web Server" module installed and configured. Hopefully I'm configuring it the right way. Sorry, actually I'm not configuring anything as I only using the default parameter value as mentioned on my note on step 3 above.
2. Folder "/var/www/htdocs/" is not available. Do I need to create this myself anyway?
3. The file "lightsquid-1.8.tgz" is currently extraced into the folder "/var/www", with executable flag for *.cgi and *.pl is set.
Please advise on how should I continue the step.

Installation and Upgrades / how to: sarg proper installation
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:33:10 pm »
how is the proper way to get sarg-2.3.1 installed in zentyal 2.0-3?
will it be degrading, jeopardizing, or even worse destructing zentyal installation if the following sarg official installation guide being run directly on a fine working zentyal server:
http://sarg.sourceforge.net/sarg.README.txt
which is better in a sense to have just a simple network traffic monitoring of <10 clients of a not-for-profit organization a.k.a. NGO, is it by installing 3rd party add-ons, eg. sarg, etc. or by purchasing paid-based service? why so, i mean in what way?
note: i understand that zentyal company is not a not-for-profit organization and therefor presumably a purchase of paid-based service will be encourage, however i am asking this simply in the sake of a fair play opinion. thanks in advance.

Hi Arun and all,
Can you please teach me of how to step-by-step install the light squid add-ons? And maybe with sqstat if you familiar with :-)
Maybe one day zentyal will have its own function similar to those squid add-ons, I hope.

Installation and Upgrades / Zentyal and Network Traffic Monitoring
« on: February 10, 2011, 01:50:22 pm »
Hi there Zentyal team,
It's great what you are doing with (previously was) ebox. Lot of new developments I see.
Just installed a fresh new one, the version 2.0-3, with only Gateway and some Infrastructure modules activated. It's pretty intuitive of how to setup the gateway and dns and dhcp, must be really good for new ebox/linux users. It's been sometimes I do not user ebox, but this Zentyal only need a couple of minutes to run and go, awesome!
Anyway, just want to quickly check, can we put wireshark into Zentyal? Or maybe is it possible to install wireshark at all? Or if not, how do we monitor network traffic of a bunch of networked windows PCs in a single LAN using Zentyal?
